Does anyone know if the original Command & Conquer is abandonware, and if so where to download it. Thanks.

Limewire?
Generally the Admins (and mods) don't appreciate discussion of P2P software so I wouldn't continue this; if you want to continue it through PM's.

Buy it. You still can, and it only costs you about 20 dollars.

Actually WK, the original C&C is no longer being sold in stores or online, sales of Red Alert have been discontinued as well...all you'll find is Red Alert 2 or Tiberian Sun, or the newer ones.

So then, it technically IS abandonware, is it not?

try using DC++, E-Mule or torrent client...but a game of that age might not be easy to get even on the internet...

According to Wikipedia:
Abandonware is computer software which is no longer being sold or supported by its copyright holder. Alternatively, the term is also used for software which is still available, but on which further support and development has been deliberately discontinued. Sometimes, it is used as a blanket category for any software over a certain age, usually five years.
The term has no legal meaning. This means that labeling any kind of software 'abandonware' does not make it legal to distribute it. Unless put in the public domain, any and all abandonware remains covered under copyright law.

A few years ago I got a special bundle that had C&C, C&C Spec Ops, Red Alert, RA Counterstrike, and RA Aftermath all in one package for about $20. I highly doubt you could find it anymore, though. I also picked up TibSun and Firestorm, but it wasn't nearly as much fun, in my opinion.

tiberian sun rox :D
music and in-game video are bombastic:P
all the music in the two first generations (perhaps its just one generation, explainage later in this post) of C&C is quite good. it goes from TD (tiberian dawn, first) music with attitude to RA2 (fourth) with less attitude but better overall quality.
Generally the C&C games are in three generations, first includes TD and RA, second is TS and RA2, third includes Generals. Tiberian Twilight / RA3 will be either third or fourth, depending on technology.
RA2 has still some shreds of the very old and original TD. Mainly some hidden tank images used in both RA and TD (and somewhat in TS, in campaigns). It's possibly one of the most long-lived game platform alive, having survived four games built on it, each with more or less major modifications involving new features. RA and TD are very similar in looks, and TS / RA increased resolutions, but perhaps its the one and same generation of games.

I believe TibSun actually used an entirely new engine. The basics worked like the original TD engine, but was quite a bit more enhanced (way points, queing, etc). Had to compete with StarCraft somehow, eh?
Anyway want to play some original C&C online?

yes, it was pretty much rewritten between RA and TS, but it still has some parts from the original.
the change between TS and RA2 wasnt so major (you could mod RA2 to be quite similar with TS, but some inner logics (laser fence walls, multi-missiles, cyborgs) were broken so it cant be complete). Yuri's Revenge, on the other hand, was quite hackish since C&C engine was never meant to handle more than 2 sides. it broke some RA2 logics, just like RA2 did with TS logics. most of these logics are still there, but of course not functional. C&C coding is far from clean when it comes to RA2, some people have inspected the modable parts of it and found quite many logics which should be there but Westwood axed them.
