Hey, Blizzard is actually using bittorrent to give beta testers the file? So if someone got hold of the .torrent file, we would be able to download it?

Well I did some searching and got the downloader. Not sure if I am suppose to post the file or not but I won't until I get a go ahead. Here is a screen shot.

No I didn't get it, but I found this some where.

Now that is intriguing. Although I don't see the point in having the downloader if it won't download anything.

I predict someone will crack the downloader and put out a .torrent file instead of blizzard's torrent downloader.

Er... what's a .torrent file? I hadn't actually heard about BitTorrent until www.worldofwarcraft.com went up, so I don't know anything about how it works.

BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer protocol designed for transferring files. Users connect directly to send and receive portions of the file, while a central tracker coordinates the action of all such peers, yet manages connections without knowledge of the contents of the files being distributed. With BitTorrent, users upload at the same time they download, so that network bandwidth is managed as efficiently as possible. In contrast to other file-transfer protocols, BitTorrent is designed to work better as the number of people interested in a certain file increases.

The files for the torrents ends with .torrent

You still need a CD-Key.
And an authentication code

What Chairs said, it asks for the auth code (cd key) every time you start the download.

Not that it's a big deal, because once someone has the whole thing downloaded they could make their own torrent of it.

^ They can make a torrent of their own they have no need to uses blizzards torrent. You just won't be able to connect to blizzards server so they are probaly working on creating their own server like warfroge's server with WCIII:FT and a crack for the game. So i bet if you wait long enough the people who already made haxed server for the Alpha will get more info and create a beta one.

So you guys are downloading wow from scratch in order to play beta? How big is it?

Well, first and foremost, you're not supposed to really be talking of downloading an illegal version of WoW beta, but since it's an innocent question:

The file should be ~1.96 GB. If you have a good torrent connection, say 50 KB/s, that's about the equivalent of a night.

As for the emulation of the WoW servers, I doubt anything substantial will come of it. They will definately not get it as smooth, or have as many features as the real WoW servers . . . EVER. If you delve a bit further into the matter, and see how far people have already gone with the emulation, you'll notice that they do have servers up and running (for example, the Stormcraft server). But as far as it stands, all you can do in these servers is run around the world. I believe they've begun to manually spawn monsters, but nothing too extravagant.

Again, I must warn people that participating in these servers, and downloading the WoW beta client is illegal and against the EULA (as far as I know), so do so at your own risk X_x.

Warforge got it running...except EVERYTHING in WoW is serverside...so all they can do is run around PKing eachother as nothing else works. At least, this is what I hear from the grapevine...

Negatory. As far as I know Warforge uses the Stormcraft beta server (I believe they just link to a torrent, a crack, and the stormcraft server info). Whether Stormcraft (GotWoW) and Warforge have any sort of *official* affiliation, or if they have some of the same staff, I'm not sure. However, I don't think Warforge has done much for World of Warcraft, or at least not nearly as much as they did for War3.

The only 'hacked' WoW server online and open to the public currently is the Stormcraft server.

Other servers currently in progress include:
Rift Server
Team 0x90 Server
Team AzeX Server
Abyssx Server

I'm sure there are more, but these are the only ones I could see offhand.

Regardless, let us never talk of this again ^_^. There's little point to bother with this hacked server. Just wait for open beta and A) you won't spoil the game for yourself, and B) you'll have a lot more fun playing it, as there won't be constant crashes and such limited content. It's a waste of time to even bother getting it illegallyX_x.

Well, first and foremost, you're not supposed to really be talking of downloading an illegal version of WoW beta,Well, I wasn't talking about downloading the illegal version myself, I had no plans to do such a thing. I just was curious about what you guys in the beta have to go through to get it.

Any lawsuits that blizzard may make against malicious activity to reverse engineer their game I find perfectly understandable. Otherwise I wouldn't agree to beta test any of their stuff.

I guess posting here put me into the wrong position :P.
