I just purchased Starcraft for my son. He will be running on a new Mac iBook with OS X. I was shocked at the system requirements for Starcraft: Mac OS 7.6 or higher. Will he be able to run Starcraft in Classic mode (aka OS 9)? or better yet in the native system 10?

Thanks,
melanie

Starcraft should work in OSX, I don't think anything special needs to be done -- but I don't know. I wouldn't be the one to ask, AJ might know better then I.

But yeah, it should play just fine, Blizzard is one of few companies that port games to both PCs and Macs.

I haven't played SC much, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't run natively by itself in OS X. I mainly play D2, and that won't run in OS X unless you download a special patch from Blizzard's site, so I'd assume it's the same with SC. The only thing I found with the OS X patch for D2 is it didn't take advantage of my graphics card, which could slow the game down a little. I don't know if this is the case with SC.

You probably could run it in Classic mode, but I think it would run too slow to be playable. Your best bet would be to just switch operating systems (if you have OS 9 installed, I don't on my laptop) or look for that patch.

EDIT: Did a little searching and this should install it from OS X (http://asia.cnet.com/downloads/mac/swinfo/0,39001908,39084803s,00.htm). Haven't found anything to patch it to run in OS X, so maybe it does it automatically?

Thanks, folks. I think I have located the patch that will enable him to run in OSX. Here's the link if anyone else is interested:

and the release notes are here:

Ahh stupid me. Totally forgot about that...

Figures I would forget to look around Blizzard support site (I feel ashamed, I always tell everyone else to and then here I am not)

Heh. May your son enjoy Starcraft as much as we have :)

There you go, same as my download but from the Blizzard site (now why didn't I think of that?).
