View Full Version : Anakin is Darth Vader? No way!
So I drag my wife along to the new Star Wars movie. We're both enjoying the movie thoroughly, which is a surprise since my wife never really cared for the other prequels, much less the original trilogy. Anyway, about half way through the movie, as Vader is christened by Sidious, the wife turns to me with a rather bewildered look and says "there's already a Darth Vader." I quietly tell her "Yes, that's him." Then, in a moment of lucidity, she says "Nooooooo, that's Darth Vader? Nooo Way!" Then the pieces all fall together and she finally realizes that this is a prequel. "Ohhhh, this is Vader when he was younger?" Yes dear, yes it is......... :)
Here's the lesson kiddies: Life exists outside the plane of the Star Wars universe. It may not be quite as exciting, but it does exist, and we should respect the ignorance of said people, as they know not what they are.

Some sarcasm I sense in you.
In all seriousness, it is understandable that not everyone is familiar with the original Star Wars trilogy (Episodes 4, 5, and 6) to know the plots that generate from Episodes 1, 2, and 3.

If you haven't watched the first (technically last) three (4, 5, and 6) and you watch the prequels, isn't it ruining 4, 5, and 6. Like when Darth Vader says, "Luke, I am your father," everyones gonna be like "Yah, I already know..." It just ruins the huge epic moment.

Agreed Ecthelion. It's writting in such a way that the last three are almost supposed to be viewed be viewed before the first three. I actually imagined what it would be like if someone watched them in number order, and I don't think it would be near as good as watching them in the order they were made.

So that's why he was putting on that Darth Vader suit. And here I just thought it was a costume party. [/sarcastic stupidity]

Uh huh.....and, how long did you know your wife before you married her?
6 months, but we met between trilogies in 1991, so I had no way of knowing that she lacked basic Star Wars knowledge. Let this be a lesson to you youngins. ;)

I think the time has come to tell your wife she REALLY needs to get out more.
"No honey, of course he's not darth vader, just his second cousin twice removed with the same name that's all."
Or you can hand her a sign, while saying, "Heeeere's yer sign." ;)
My wife is more accomplished than anyone else I know, yet she knows very little about pop culture from the 80's and 90's, that was the point of this thread. She's done more in her short life than most, yet she can't name anyone on the Jedi council. To be honest, that may be more of a reflection on me than her. ;)

When I went to see Phantom Menace, I was very confused throughout the whole movie because Luke Skywalker wasn't there. I thought that all the Star Wars movies were about Luke.

You know, not that Star Wars isn't great, but I think it's great your wife doesn't know much about it. It's always been a bother to me when someone knows all the names of every character, big or small, in a movie or TV series or the such. It's like you said, there is a life outside of Star Wars, or even (dare I say it?) Warcraft. Now, as long as she doesn't sit around watching Oprah all day I'd say you've gotten quite a catch. ;)

Tis true, I have no idea why she married me. :)
