Hey All, what do you think the best War Movie of all time is? (Non Fictional)
My favorite is "We Were Soldiers", then my second best is "Full Metal Jacket".
Whats yours?
Edit: oops, i meant to put this in the entertainment compendium, perhaps a Mod could move it for me please.

I would say Black Hawk Down and Apocalypse Now (Based on the novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad). Those are great.

Full Metal Jacket is my favorite, and probably one of the best. Runners up include Casablanca, Bridge on the River Kwai, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart...
would Gladiator be considered a war movie? Because if so, that goes on the list too. And Star Wars ;) (the first two)
If you're going for funny, Stripes with Bill Murray is great.

Full Metal Jacket
Black Hawk Down
Runner up is Platoon
hmmm, probably "The longest day"
or "Kelly's heros" although that isnt really a "Proper" war film.
The Bridge On The River Kwai (aka the Obi Wan Kenobi bridge movie)
Black Hawk Down
We Were Soldiers

Special Mention - Best War Fighting: Saving Private Ryan

Finally, although it isn't a war movie for the majority of its running time, and because it's a relatively light-hearted musical, I have to mention Asoka, the Bollywood flick that has a final battle scene that uses no CGI and consists of 50 war elephants, 600 horses, and 6000 extras. If you're getting tired of watching video game cinematics pretend to be war scenes, watch Asoka.

Patton. Behold, the greatest war movie of all time.
We Were Soldiers is good, but not particularly great. Saving Private Ryan and Apocalypse Now are both good in my opinion.

Well, its a Hollywood blockbuster, so expect all the rehashed material: A guy that goes from zero to hero, a cheesy storyline, the mandatory love story, historical inaccuracies (at least that's what I've heard, I haven't studied that period)...Despite that it's an entertaining movie...The ending is nice, not the typical Hollywood ending. Nice photograph and music also
1. Band of Brothers
2. Patriot
Hmmm.. I'm surprised so many people say Saving Private Ryan. I personally thought it really wasn't that good. But thats just me.
But I have never seen Enemy at the Gates or Black Hawk Down so I can't comment on them.

Casablanca
Saving Private Ryan
Patton
Platoon
We Were Soldiers
Full Metal Jacket
Bridge of River Quai
The Thin Red Line
Enemy at the Gates
All Quiet on the Western Front
Black Hawk Down
Master and Commander
Braveheart

[Numerous war movies featuring John Wayne]
My favorites: Saving Private Ryan, Patton, Apocalypse Now
All Time Best War Movie: All Quiet on the Western Front
No movie (or book) has had such an impact on people, epitomized the beliefs of society or shown the horrors of war. All with film technology from the 1930s. Need I say more?

The best is Patton. No contest. I also like The Longest Day.

I would have to say Saving Private Ryan or Platoon.
Don't get me wrong, i love old war movies (ie: Patton, All Quiet on the Western Front, Gallipoli, The Dirty Dozen) but those two win it hands down for realism, and for showing the grit and true horror of war.
Band of Brothers ranks high up there also... ;)

Amazingly enough, Orlando Bloom doesn't play a complete pussy in this one. *thinks back to Troy* The Damascus war mask was awsome! I want one to go with my clerical robes.

Awww, hell yeah, Dambusters was awesome
Another one I loved, not sure what it was called though, think it was "The Bismarck" or the sinking of "The Sinking of the Bismarck" or something like that.
There were some great old Navy ones.

Was there ever a battle of the river plate film?
Cause I know the book was great.
And Colditz, Colditz was good (If that was the name of the film, it might have been called "Escape from colditz", but meh)

If you're going to just post "I'm with stupid" without giving any support, don't bother posting at all.

Haha, overlook the timespan between the two posts immediately above you while you're at it. ;)
Anyway, Patton is still my favorite. Thought I'd throw that in for some semblance of being on topic.
