View Full Version : Whiteknight's Introductory Diplomacy (Ended)
Whiteknight

Alright boys and girls, there seems to be a lot of support from some new people wanting to try out diplomacy so I'm giving them their chance. So, please, let me welcome you to:
Whiteknight's Introductory Diplomacy
Alright, this is the standard version of Diplomacy, nothing too hard to learn on. I am requesting that, for now, only people who have not played diplomacy and want to learn sign up. If enough people do not sign up, then I shall open it to others, but inexeperienced will still be considered first. If you have already played diplo but want to be sure to get on if there is not enough, I will create a waiting list for that. Also, since a few may drop out due to inexperience and frustration (although I hope that is not the case!), I will also create a list of backups that will replace them if needed.
I am also looking for some helpers. We need some guiders to help these people understand the game and give them advice on how to move. I'll be one of these, but more the more the better! Please, if some advanced Diplo players would do so, that would be great.
Alright, for those new people who wish to sign up, I recommend you read this tutorial at http://ry4an.org/diptutor/. After you have read that, I, or any guides, will be happy to help you make sure you understand it.
This game will be taken at a leisurely pace of about 3 days between rounds once it is up and running. I will be very lenient, but please, try not to put it off to the last second if you are not waiting on responses from anyone.
Introductory Players:
1. Kongurous - Austria
2. GrassDragon - Russia
3. HammockSleeper - Italy
4. RPGuy6 - England
5. LordQuimbley - Germany
6. Arcani-Ragner - France
7. MarkPyro - Turkey
Guides:
1. Whiteknight
2. DS-Shadow (One or two players)
3. BlackHawk
4. Modred
5. Orodreth
6. TheGreatBrain
etc.
Backups:
1. Toxic Freak
2.
3.
etc.
I give you the map:
http://sigs.kupatrix.com/IntroDiplo-Fall-1900.gif
Good luck to everyone and happy deceiving!
Note: The game starts on Spring of 1901 and the rounds will proceed as follows:
1. Spring
2. Spring adjustments (if needed)
3. Fall
4. Fall adjustments (if needed)
5. Fall builds
If the game proceeds too slowly, I may merge 4 + 5.

I read of a game where each player had a coach who recieved copies of that player's messages and helped the new player make decisions (help being the operative word, not creating the orders themselves). Of course, you must then only have 1 coach per player and coaches must not share information about their player's plans with other coaches or players. However coaches could have meetings to discuss what they are learning about the new players, things that other coaches might should emphasize (such as certain rules or theories about the game), etc.
Even if you don't have a 1-to-1 coach-player ration, I'll still be a guide.

We are full up! Please note that we are still looking for guides and backup players.
Assigned countries:
Kongurous - Austria
GrassDragon - Russia
HammockSleeper - Italy
RPGuy6 - England
LordQuimbley - Germany
Arcani-Ragner - France
MarkPyro - Turkey
The loose deadline for orders will be for Thursday, May 12. This is to assure that everyone is able to grasp the game before we go on and get help with understanding the rules and making orders.
Feel free to make NAPs (Non-Aggression Pacts, which are basically "I won't attack you if you don't attack me) and alliances in the thread or in PMs.
Please contact a guide if help is needed. Thank you.

I'm doing this mainly so that I can make sure that most people have at least a basic understanding of the game. It's a good idea if they send them to me or discuss them with a guide a few days before the deadline so that they can fix them if they made a mistake. Already I've seen a few.
Wo there. Too many peace pffers when the first move hasn't even been made! However I duly accept your offer France.
'Tis the way of diplomacy!
Alright, it seems that while I'm away, the PMs play, so I'm going to go answer those that I can before I fall asleep from tiredness. :)
Note: For all future orders, please include your country name and year when you PM orders. Thank you.
Edit: Alright, to clear up some confusion I will post the format for the orders.
The proper way to write a move order is:
(Fleet or A) (Country where your unit is currently) moves to [represented by - or ->], (Country you wish to move to.)
eg. A Ven - Tus
To write a support order for a holding or supporting unit:
(Fleet or A) (Country where your unit is currently) Supports (A or F) (Country you wish to lend support to).
Eg. A Con S A Smy H
To write a support order for a moving unit:
(Fleet or A) (Country where your unit is currently) Supports (A or F) (Where the country you wish to lend support to currently is) -> (country that unit is moving to)
Eg. A Vie - Gal
A Bud S A Vie - Gal
To write to support another player's unit (Holding or Supporting):
(Fleet or A) (Country where your unit is currently) Supports (Player's Main Country name) (A or F) (Where the country you wish to lend support to currently is) -> (country that unit is moving to)
Eg. F Tri S Italy A Ven
To write to support another player's unit moving:
(Fleet or A) (Country where your unit is currently) Supports (Player's Main Country name) (A or F) (Where the country you wish to lend support to currently is) -> (country that unit is moving to)
Eg. A Vie S Russian A War - Gal
To write an order for a convoy:
F (Country your fleet is in) Convoys A (Country your army is in) -> (Country you want to move to).
Eg. F Kie C A Ber -> Hol
I believe that is sufficient. Please not that you need not simplify all the names, you can write them out if you wish. However, please make sure that your orders at least resemble those.
DS-Shadow
05-07-2005, 6:36 AM
Another rule:
Convoyies can link, What you have to do is convoy a fleet onto another fleet which takes the convoyed army.
F NTS C A EDI -> F HEL
F HEL C A EDI -> KIE

On the map your supple centers are denoted by red circles in your country, and in each of these you should have either an empty circle or square. Circles respresent armies and squares represent fleets.
For example, you are Germany (dark gray). You have supply centers in Kiel, Berlin, and Munich. Kiel has a fleet and the other two have armies.

05-17-2005, 1:29 AM
Alright, since this question came up a few times I'll address it in the thread.
Each diplomacy works on a turn based system of half years. The first turn is Spring, in which all the players submit their beginning moves. After that come Spring adjustments, in which if there are retreats then that is when the players submit their orders for retreats and such (Note, some GMs may leave out this step and combine it with the next in order to speed up gameplay).
The next step is Fall, in which the players move their units. At the end of Fall is when the Player's units capture whatever country they are in and that country turns to the colour of the commanding player. This could be a SC, a regular country, whatever. Any country your unit is in in Fall automatically converts to your colour.
Now, after Fall comes Fall adjustments and then builds. When you have (take over) more SCs (Supply Centres) than you have units, and if your HSC's (Home Supply Centres, the SCs you started with) are not occupied, you may build units. You may only build units in your home supply centres and only when you have more SCs than units. If you have more units than SCs, then you must pick a unit to disband (delete from game).
After the builds, the round returns to spring and the cycle starts all over again.
So, basically, this next round is when you take over whatever countries you occupy. Usually you will aim to occupy SCs in this round so that you can build to conquer even more next round. Keep in mind that to win the game, you only need to take 18 SCs, at least in this game.
Please feel free to ask me any more questions if needed.
To RPGuy6: I apologize, I did get your orders in first. I missed them when going through and making the list of whose I had because yours were so early. My mistake.

Whiteknight
05-18-2005, 12:22 AM
More answers:
Whatever country is your colour is yours. If you are red and 5 SCs are in countries that are red, you own 5 SCs. If you have only 3 units after owning these 5 SCs, then you may build 2 more units because you can have as many units as you have SCs. Countries change to your colour in the Fall.
Remember to try to get orders in tomorrow, if possible.

WK’s Introductory Diplomacy: Fall 1901
Orders Due: Pending
Description: Everybody except for Italy gains at least one build. The most extrordinary play was from Germany who expanded two fold as well as stopping Russia from gaining a build. Russia however played well in the South stealing two SC’s he probably shouldn’t have. France gains a respectable two SC’s while England to the north and Turkey in the south chug along and get one. Italy as mentioned did not get any builds seems to be plotting something -- but this lack of builds early on might hurt him.

BlackHawk

When are we getting new pieces?
Thank you for bringing that up. Now you will notice that at the end of the post (before the map) it has this:
Builds/Retreats/Disbands/SC Count
France: 2/0/0/5
Austria: 1/0/0/4
Italy: 0/0/0/3
Turkey: 1/0/0/4
Germany: 3/0/0/6
Russia: 2/0/0/6
Britain: 1/0/0/4
This section specifies how many builds you will receive (the first number being the number of new units you can build, therefore builds). You can use these builds to build that number of units in one of your home cities.
For example:
Britain has 1 build. Therefore he can build one new unit in any one of his home SC's (Edinburgh, Lpl, or London).
The next phase after Fall is the Fall Builds (if their are retreats then it goes Fall > Fall Ajustments > Fall Builds), which is more commonly known as Winter. All you do in this period is state what type of unit you are building and in which of your home SC's.
I hope I cleared that up for ya.

Sorry, I looked at it, wasn't sure of the answer and then forgot. I just checked again and found the answer. Check your PM box.
Sent builds. Could you give us a little guide to writing build orders for the future?
Received. And sorry about that, all it is is the unit type followed by the country / area / SC / whatever.
Example
Using Russia as an example, he has 2 builds. Therefore say he wanted to build 1 army and 1 fleet -- the army in his hometown SC of Sevastopol, the fleet in St. Petersburg (south coast).
The orders would be as follows:
A Sevastopal
F St. Petersburg (sc)
If you have any more questions please feel free to ask or PM me. No question is too 'noobish' or whatever label you wish to apply, it's an introductory game afterall!

WK’s Introductory Diplomacy: Spring 1902
Orders Due: June 12
Description: There were some damn good plays this round. England realizes the full potential of convoying as he supports himself into Germany’s Belgium. Will he be able to protect it one more round to gain a foothold in enemy territory? England and France best Germany, the former power. Germany also fails to expand northward due to a dual effort between Russia and Britain. While Austria defends itself from Italy, Russia and Turkey both creep and seem poised to make a devastating blow. Will Austria be able to hold them off and expand once again? Everyone else seems to expand and all seem ready to attack another at the drop of a hat. Several countries seem to honour alliances which work against others. Will they pan out? We will have to see.

His unit that was convoying stays there. You confronted it with 1 unit so you two bounce. Bouncing does not stop a convoy because the convoy does not count as an extra attack unit.

WK’s Introductory Diplomacy: Fall 1902
Retreats/Disbands/Builds Due: June 16
Description: What an incredible round! Austria is confronted on all sides by three separate nations and, as a result, loses 2 of it’s home SCs. Russia pulls safely into the lead with the attack on Austria and the expansion westward. Turkey exchanges SCs with Austria, although Turkey may prove to have the upper hand by taking a HSC. France stands still, mostly, and Italy finally gets a build! Britain looks like the quiet underdog by gaining a bigger foothold in Germany and expanding steadily outward.

You can't trade spots with another army. If each of you attacks the other's country, as if you would swap places, you both bounce. Britain took your country because it had a power of two (it was supported) to your one. The reason you didn't do the same thing to France at Burgundy is because you wrote your orders incorrectly. You don't want to move two armies into the same country, you'll bounce yourself. Instead, do a move order with one and support with the other.

You can support however many units you like. However, if you have unit B supporting unit A, and unit C supporting Unit B, if you were to attack unit B it would be cut and leave A without support, regardless of how many units are supporting B.
Lord Quimbley, you did not support a unit. Anyways, this is why I ask you to actually consult a guide before giving me your orders. I will not look at them unless you specify.

Might as well do builds here too.

Alright. I'm going to make this as simple as possible. I needed both builds + retreats. If you need to retreat, please look below the moves. There will be this thing:
Builds/Retreats/Disbands/SC Count
France: 0/0/0/5
Austria: 0/2 (A Trieste must retreat to Tyrolia, Vienna, or disband ; A budapest must retreat to Vienna or disband)]/1/3
Italy: 1/0/0/3
Turkey: 0/0/0/4
Germany: 0/1 (F Holland must retreat to Hel, Kiel, or disband)/2/4
Russia: 2/0/0/8
Britain: 2/0/0/6
The first number beside your country tells you how many builds you can make. The second number tells you how many retreats you have and also tells you the only places that your retreats can go. For example, in the instance of Germany, Holland can only retreat to Hel or Kiel. If he does not want to retreat there, then the unit may be disbanded, which means it is cleared off the "board.
The third number tells you how many units you must disband/get rid of (in fall), or have been disbanded (in spring). For example, Germany has to disband two units.
The last number tells you how many SCs you currently posess. Now to got through everyone.
France (Arcani-Ragner): France has no units to build, no units to disband, and no retreats, so he does not need to send orders.
Austria (ToxicFreak): Austria must make two retreats. You may only retreat to where it tells you on the retreat area. You may not retreat to where you are attacked. Austria also need to disband one unit. Therefore, I need ToxicFreak to redo his orders and include a disband.
Italy (HammockSleeper): HammockSleeper has only one thing to do and that is builds. He has sent me his builds, so his orders are in.
Turkey (MarkPyro): MarkPyro has nothing to do, so he does not need to send orders.
Germany (LordQuimbley): Germany has one retreat which may only retreat to Hel or Kiel, not North Sea. You cannot retreat to where you were attacked from or if there was a bounced country. Germany also needs to disband two units. I have none of these orders from Germany.
Russia (GrassDragon): Russia has 2 builds. He has those orders in, so I am done with GD for now.
Britain (RPGuy6): Britain only needs builds. RPGuy6 has sent these builds.
WHO I NEED:
ToxicFreak: Please redo your orders and include a disband.
LordQuimbley: Please redo your retreats and include 2 disbands.
Now, can we please get through this?
Whiteknight
06-18-2005, 2:07 PM
Alright, I've realised that I think it may be simpler to just split it up and do it step by step. I also realize that I should have combined builds and orders instead. I forgot that retreats can affect what land you have.
I will be doing this step by step from now on. Please give me your retreats so I can get the retreats map up. After the retreats map is up, you can re-submit your builds or you can keep them.

Whiteknight- sorry I didnt give further notice, but, I will be at camp from today until June 24th. From what it looks like, you have a bit of a hold up at the moment, and that will delay you a few days.
If you want to keep moving with the game by the time the delay has passed, I give you permission to grant someone my controls until I get back. If this has to be done, I do not want any attacks made unless extremely necessary.

WK’s Introductory Diplomacy: Spring 1904
Adjustments Due: June 29th
Description: There are some unnecessary supports to units who don’t need it by Britain and Russia. Russia and Germany switch SCs for the time being, although Russia makes a key stab into a home SC. France manages to poke it’s head into German/French territory, and actually looks like he might keep it. Germany manages to keep itself alive for at least one more year by his smart move into Sweden, although his final days may be numbered. The giant Russia finally makes a move into the Turkish territory that must have been beckoning to him all game. Will the Turks be able to make a stand? Everyone else adjusts themselves for a greater advantage to gain SCs in the coming fall.
