My maps have tons of WAVS in them and i would like to make them smaller so the maps don't get oversized and out of control.

Any idea how i can do this? Is it possible to compress the WAV files, or even use a different type of file like an MP3 or something? (i don't know which is larger...)

Thanks!

you could compress them in a .ZIP, I believe.
Otherwise, you could download a free converter, to convert the .WAV files into .MP3's or .WMV's (I think). Do a google search, or, you can wait until I get to my home computer in about 4 hours, and I can send you the setup files for a converter that I use.

Will I be able to use these files (.MP3 or .WMV) in a map?
I assume they are smaller than WAVS...

You can't use .MP3 or Compile them to a .ZIP or .RAR (or any other compressing, there's a ton of em..). StarCraft isn't compatable with them. That's why I stopped playing SC for a few months because I was hoping 1.12 would make MP3s compatable and make it so you could stop music, did they? NO! Which pisses me and a lot of other mappers off. I'd suggest just getting the pieces u want and using a .WAV modifier.

wen you compress a .wav, the only format that staredit understands... it reduces sound quality. say it originally at 128kb/s it would probably play @ around 64kb/s so its a significant reduce in quality but @ least the sound is in the map, crappy sound better than no sound?

Chuiu_os mentioned some sort of free sound program, but sen is down and I don't remember any more about it. Something about MPQs...

If you use SC Free Sounds, that's here also (http://www.warboards.org/showthread.php?t=9407), it will allow you to compress your map size if in it you use the usual *.mpq files that are inside the SC directory. What that app does is to directly link the *.wav(s) inside those files to be used in your map without adding any file size. Next you most probably will use'em in your triggers. ;)
Btw, I've quited using it and now am doin' the same with the latest SCMDraft 2 (http://www.stormcoast-fortress.net/) that is out (read pre-public beta #8 release).
And altough the link for all mapping tools is also on the top link provided in this post, have added this one from it's source (aka authors) 'cause this one I know for sure that does the above mentioned. :)

For other sounds that aren't SC basis related, you'll have to add'em and later on use ProEdit, for instance, to shorten the map file size. And if even afterwards it still is a biggie then try to compact the map (to a *.zip or even *.rar, as most used examples), as said above.

Warning: If you use any map protection tools like that one I suggest anyone to make a backup from that file before, just in case you want to edit it later.

the file sizes are as follows
wmv < mp3 < wav

but as IceFlare said its also about the quality of the sounds
