His pope name is Benedict XVI (16th) and he was a Cardinal only hours ago. His real/former name is (Cardinal) Joseph Ratzinger. He hails from Germany.

Awesome! What else can I say? I hope he's like the last.
Well go new guy! I hope that the Catholic church is happy with their new leader, and he helps them with all the problems they've been going through...

In the lower link it talks a bit about his life and stuff. I've also heard that he has a simular standing to that on John Paul II.

I remembered last week on the Daily Show they were explaining how they elected new popes, and showed a 527 (attack ad) in Latin against Ratzinger, comparing him to Martin Luther and calling him a "Sausage eating bastard", since he's from Germany. Funny as hell.

I criticise Ratzinger because he is a former Hitler Youth.

It was mandatory, you can't blame him for that. He probably didn't want too, but like they said, It was hard to resist. But he is the first Germanic Pope in about 1000 years. Hope he does well.

Just because I <3 Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Benedict_XVI
When Ratzinger turned 14 in 1941 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1941), he was required by law to join the Hitler Youth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitler_Youth), but according to his biographer John Allen he was not an enthusiastic member
Look, the man is one of the most conservative Popes ever. I'm not encouraged.

I wanted a Mexican Pope, anyway... I´ve heard that he is very conservative, maybe he is a Nazi moth*rf*cker, I mean it doesn't make sense "Yeah he is an ultra conservative guy but he didn't like being with the Nazis". Yeah right, I don't buy that, maybe his biographer is altering everything (Hey... the Bible has been altered).

Not Norberto! o_O
Seriously... considering the options I think we're better off without a Mexican pope... at least for now. :/
He's NOT anything like John Paul II. He's conservative as hell. I don't like this. :\

Well, if you don't like him, look at it on the bright side.
He's 78.

They should of made me the Pope...
Come on...if any of you clicked the link in my sig then you know you wanna see me in that big hat and waving to the people... Not to mention I would be deemed the Heretic Pope and most likely assassinated by the Church to be rid of me...but I'm a nice guy :-\

If he were a nazi or nazi supporter, he would be antisemitic. Jesus was a jew. Although Hitler might not have known this, I doubt a Pope or former Cardinal would miss something like that. If he did, then that's very sad. :(

Ahh, yes, because it's common knowledge that all German Conservatives are Nazis...Joy.
Ratzinger isn't going to last long. He was meant to be a transitional Pope, anyway. He doesn't seem to be such a bad choice, either.
On Ratzinger's Conservatism: How many Popes have condoned homosexuality and gay marriage? My best guess is around zero to one, so I really don't see where this whole issue with his conservatism is stemming from.

Just so everyone knows, being religiously conservative with being a Nazi are ridiculously not the same. I'm glad we have a conservative new pope, and if you thought we were going to have another liberal pope you would be mistaken. I predicted that John Paul II's successor would be conservative, a transitional pope as was mentioned, who will not make any great changes to the current tradition. The previous pope did a lot of things against custom and if you aren't aware of all these things, then you should read up on it. The pope following this current one has the potential to make drastic changes, but our new one certainly won't.
The thing that surprised me most was that he is German. I would have thought we'd have another Italian.

John Paul II was Polish, and why an Italian pope?

John Paul II was Polish, and why an Italian pope?
Yeah I know he was Polish but for the 455 years preceding his election the pope has been Italian. Vatican City is in Italy, much business is done in Italian with Italians, the Pope is also the Bishop of Rome, a city full of, you guessed it, Italians.
Valjean

Isn't Italy right on top of the vatican?
And I don't think he meant that John Paul II was Italian, but I think that there were alot of italian popes at one time or another.
It was somewhat exciting around lunch time at my school when they elected the new pope. I was sitting the the cafeteria with Graeme and some boy shouted out he's a nazi... I didn't like that very much. It wasn't appropriate at all. I give him maybe 6 years as a pope because he is so old. Then they will pick another pope. No one will ever live up to Pope JP II... its impossible to fill those shoes.
he did have a semi-nice singing voice though

You think 85.8 percent of the world looks evil.....
I also heard early, before the new pope was elected,(dont quote me on this) but there was a women who said if we get a African American(basically black) Pope, that nostradomus predicted that it would be the end of the world. And when I heard that, I was like what the $u#k#! Is she like on drugs or something, I have heard of being racist, but I mean comon! Anyways, congrats on the new pope, lets hope we get at least 15 or so years of of him.

78 + 15 = 93...bit of a stretch.
And you're wrong! For me, it's more like 62.3 percent.

Yeah right, I don't buy that, maybe his biographer is altering everything (Hey... the Bible has been altered).Do you have any evidence for this, or are you just making assertions to support your presuppositions about conservatives?
They should of made me the Pope...
I'd vote for you.

My understanding is that allegedly Christian anti-semetic people claim that Jesus was not a Jew, that was a conspiracy spread by x.(X being some faction that I don't remember, sorry.)
On the topic of the pope's looks, I think he looks alright, you know, for a pope. Not at all evil. But then, I'm often told I look evil so I guess I'm skewed in favor of the "evil" look. :)
And seeing as I'm stuck here while AJ plays with his toys, I will also add that I'm not a Catholic Christian, so this doesn't really affect me all that much. Congratulations to the Catholics on the board though.

Ahh, yes, because it's common knowledge that all German Conservatives are Nazis...Joy.
No, sorry if I sounded like that, I didn't refer to conservative Germans in general...I just think that the fact that he was along the Nazi lines is shamefull, and we shouldn't give that power to someone like him...Yes I know I sound paranoic but I just fear that this will mean a return to something like the inquisition, to some drastic measures taken by the church, and there is always the crazy fanatic that will do wathever its religion tells him (like some Mexican organisations). Yes I know I sound crazy, but I can't trust in the church.
Do you have any evidence for this, or are you just making assertions to support your presuppositions about conservatives?
Yes I think you're right, I shouldn't make some crazy assumptions, sometimes my mind thinks about all these possible conspiracy schemes. But I do think that ultraconservativism (I don't know it that's the correct word) leads to racism, therefore I still don't like the new Pope.
Don't take this the wrong way, but my friend was over here, joking about the Pope. Nothing was serious, although a few comments were a little on the crude side. But the one thing that actually made me laugh was this one:
"Y'know? There's a lot of names the pope could have. I'm surprised he didn't go with Pope Amadaeus the XIIXLOLWTFBBQ or something..."
Truely... One of the funnier ones... XD

Yes I know, sorry for being paranoid. Quite frankly I don't know what to expect, because the Pope is a strong figure and we have seen what happens when power is placed in the wrong hands. But yes, I'm sorry if someone felt offended by my last posts.
The people of the Roman Catholic Church sure seem very excited and happy that a new pope has been selected. And the new pope seems really nice.
