Hi guys,
My nephew and I are Starcraft junkie's but he's a little more knowledgeable then I am with the new add-on's etc.
First issue: He was working with StarEdit Campaign Editor and like others were disappointed with the blandness of it. It is 7 years old.
I was searching, I think, the blizzard web site and found an *.exe that was an improvement on the original staredit.exe. I put it on his PC by going into Windows Explorer, deleting staredit.exe, and renaming the improved version to staredit.exe. The result: A happy nephew :) Since then, they have a NEW PC and he wants me to install the update again, but I can't find the improved version.
Can anyone send me a link to the update/ *.exe?
Second issue:
Also, I'll put it bluntly, What the _ell is StarDraft?
He's not a programmer and I'm not interested in programming in this area.
He's pointed me to custom updates to the Original StarCraft, like Emerald Place Gold, but I'm very hesitant, they are not made by Blizzard Software AND more important it is unclear how you install these customs.
What ever happened to the simply process of double clicking on a custom update, (a self install) then playing a custom enhanced version of the original StarCraft.
Why do I need StarDraft? StarGraft? StarMaft? Star whatever?
Finally I'd like to learn how to use both the StarEdit and more importantly How Map Settings work. He's the kind of nephew that will assume that anything he understands you must obviously understand without telling you... he's 11 :)
If you could send me a link on how on-line "map settings" works contrary to the one on one StarCraft philosophy we play against each other it would be appreciated.
I can't find any documentation on what is assumed when you enter a map settings game. I know that you can upgrade e.g. your marines armor from 0 to 3 in 10 seconds, instead of the more lengthy process which requires making other buildings like Science facilities first
Any help and links would be appreciated.
The more links the better.

Suggestion for improvement: Within StarCraft, put in an option to update the StarCraft software or maybe non-Blizzard StarCraft customs, in the same way you send us updates to Battle.net.
PS Has anyone taken my earlier suggestion to be able to reverse in the replays that we save? Previously you can only watch a replay but can rewind it backward to a certain point in time to learn from a mistake.

Can anyone send me a link to the update/ *.exe?A blizzard made staredit improvment? I've never heard of one. However, there are other good map editors out there, I would suggest downloading SCXE (http://www.stormcoast-fortress.net/gaming/starcraft/programs/scxe/download/), the starcraft Xtra Editor. It has some nice stuff like placing any units regardless of race, coloring text with ease, and more units. There's also StarForge (http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jcable/starforge/starforge.zip) and SCMDraft 2 (http://scmdraft.stormcoast-fortress.net/?action=download&file=ScmdraftV7), (I think you may have to sign up to the website to get it) which are advanced editors. You can try those out if you feel like it.

He's pointed me to custom updates to the Original StarCraft, like Emerald Place GoldEmerald placer gold is an add-on to an editor. However, the links I hade above should have everything you need., but I'm very hesitant, they are not made by Blizzard SoftwareIt doesn't have to be made by Blizzard, you know. If the website seems shady, it may have a virus, but for the most part, they should do fine.

What ever happened to the simply process of double clicking on a custom update, (a self install) then playing a custom enhanced version of the original StarCraft. That method still exists, it's just that you are probably:
A: Trying to play a mod that was made with StarDraft (out-dated)
B: The mod comes as a folder with many files like arr.dat.
Why do I need StarDraft? StarGraft? StarMaft? Star whatever? Who said that you needed them?
Finally I'd like to learn how to use both the StarEditIt's pretty easy to make something easy, go to the terrain layer to put land and stuff down, go to the doodad layer to add extras to your terrain, go to the unit layer to put units down for players. You should ask more specific questions, thought. How Map Settings work. The Use Map Settings template takes everything you put on your map in the map editor, units and triggers and locations, on your map. Every other map template will only recongize terrian and doodads and the starting location, the circle that is the player's color.
If you have more questions, just ask.

Every other map template will also recognize sprites, resources (owned by P12), and critters (owned by P12).

Strange, I am running Win XP Home Edition, and SCXE works find on my computer, are you sure its not the version of SCXE you have? There should not be much difference between Home Ed, and Pro Ed, just the programs you get with each.

Uhh, if you were running the launcher, wouldn't it run by its own application? I'm not sure about WIN 32, I don't even know what that is. Can you be more descriptive about the problem?

The file I downloaded and clicked on was: SCXE26SetupE.exe
E:\StarCraft\StarEdit_Update\SCXE26SetupE.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

Try using 2.5
I prefer 2.5 over 2.6 because of multiple issues :P

Weird... why is it in E:, for me thats my disk drive. Try putting it on your desktop or something, maybe that will work. Sorry, I don't know much about program errors.

That *.exe file is only the compacted installers. Of course you need space for it to be unpacked, as the HD provides.
If you copy that file into a folder within you hard drive and then open it, it would make 3 separate files in that same location. Then pick the isntaller one. The others are sorta irrelevant (*.exe updates from 2.5 version, SC install directory finding fix and such). ;)
Hope this works. It did for me.
FYI add: Some SC editing tools require basic MS scripting and such. I would recommend you to peek better at the sources of these editors since those are many times linked in there. :)

Hi guys,
We can close this thread. I went to http://www.staredit.net (http://www.staredit.net/) and when to the download
area. The executables worked fine for me on that site.
I guess there are 5 modes I can run it. It should install on my newphew's PC with no problems.
Last follow up: Where can I find out how map settings work?
When I join a battle.net map setting game the rules are completely different
and I don't know what the rules are.
Thanks again.

alright when you build a melee map you just place start locations, minerals and gas. but in a use map settings map any unit you place ex. a terran command center will show in the ums map but not in the melee map. it basically just takes all the buildings and units you place and puts them on the actual map therefor it needs triggers to define the rules, melee is set, simple and easy to make, but ums you need to tell it what the rules are using triggers ex
Condition
Player 1 controls exactly 0 all units
Action
End scenario in defeat for Player 1

Hi mike, welcome to WarBoards.org!
If a map is use map settings, it just means that the creator of the map programmed their own settings on the map. There is a huge range of flexibility for the map creator, so every use map settings map is different from the next. So we can't tell you how to how they work, because it's different each time.
If the person who made the map was good, they would have provided instructions in the mission briefing or at the start of the map.

Hi guys,
I think I'm starting to get it, but I have one problem.
Situation:
Let's say I create a map with my own map, gas, minerals and trigger's then upload it to Battle.net to play my nephew. My map load's and certainly I'm ready to play, ha, ha, ha, (I KNOW THE MAP)
How in the world will my nephew have a chance of beating me, seeing he has no ideas what the rules or triggers of the map are?
Can he upgrade marine armor automatically? He didn't make the map so he doesn't know.
Every game with any fairness in America has a set of rules people go by and are aware of on both sides.
When I join a map settings game that that I didn't make, how can I win if I don't know the rules, behaviors, and goals of the game for that map going in?
When I load a map settings game I see no option for me to read the rules, abilities and limitations of my own developing force, BEFORE I JOIN THE GAME.
See my point?
Mike

And that's what makes UMS so fun ^.^
It's important, as a map maker, to explain to the players how to play the map when it starts.
For example, if moving unit x on beacon y (just a random example) does z, inform your players about it either when the game starts or when they approace the beacon.
You can trust the more intellegent playrers to figure it out and than explain to the noobier players (usually only dudes on their team).
Althougt, keep it simple, no one comes to starcraft to solve difficult mathematicle quastions or complete a series or hardcore tasts who take years to train at and be good enought at to succed (except those who does).
