View Full Version : Organ Donors?

Today I received a little card in the mail; I'm an organ donor. When I die, I've given my permission for my bone tissue, heart, heart valves, kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas and skin tissue to be used to save other peoples' lives. Of course, they might have difficulty finding a heart, but if they can it's theirs.
I'm curious to know whether anyone else here is an organ donor? Also, to those who aren't; why not? I understand that some peoples' beliefs forbid that sort of thing, but I'm not bound by those sorts of obligations. The way I see it is that I'm not going to be using them after I die, so someone else may as well.
I've also donated blood a couple of times, but I've stopped as I have bad reactions to it.

I've been an organ donor all my life, so has everyone else from my family ;)
If I can save someone's life why not be an organ donor?

I want to be. My mom says I need to wait until I'm 18 to do it, because she won't give me permission. As soon as I hit that age though...take me apart all you want, if I'm not using them already.
Personally, I like the system they have in some countries on the continent, you need a card saying you DONT want to be recycled, this means that people who would be donors if they could be bothered filling in the card will be.
organ donation - reincarnation on the instalment plan......
Donating your organs when you die is a very good idea. Your dead so you can't do anything with yourself anymore and your body parts are basically useless to yourself.

I'm not an organ donor, and personally, I don't like the idea of being cut up like an old automobile andused for spare parts. I would prefer to not desecrate my body with such things, and keep myself "whole" for my own dignity's sake when I die.
I realize there are several people who would benefit from this system, and I don't disrespect people for doing this in the spirit of helping others. I just don't want my own body cut up like that. I'd prefer to remain in one piece and all. It might be selfish, but it's my body, my choice. Certainly no disrespect for anyone who chooses either way really.

In my religion, there are opposing beliefs regarding organ donation. Some people state that it's allowed, and some people don't like the idea. It's one of those issues that's currently up in the air at the moment, and varies from place to place with different cultural beliefs.
I am not an organ donor, nor do I plan or want to be one. Call me crazy, but my body is my body... I would like to take that to the earth with me when I die. Granted, I could save a life with my heart, etc., but I would prefer to keep it for myself.
We all have our different beliefs, I guess. :)

I wonder if later on in the future you could donate your brain and they could cut it up and transfer parts of it to people who needed them.
Anyways, I wouldn't mind donating my body just not all of it, I mean I still want some of it to either be buried or burned to a crisp. However I'd would probably have to get checked for diseases first, as far as I know my family has a short history of Parkinsons (not sure if it's spelled like that) in the older males and looking at my shaky hand every now and then I'm not to positive about the medical conditions of my body in the far future.
Afterall who would want to get a vibrating organ. :smirk:

Fair play to you, i lost my dignity long ago. And I like to think I could help someone when I die.
But fair enough, I'm not going to force anyone to be diced up for parts.

i'm not but i want to be one.
slice and dice! slice and dice! Yeah!
but seriously i figure i won't be using them any time soon after im dead so why not put them too good use
I think I'm to young at the moment, but once I am old enough to be one (18 I think) then I will be. I don't see why I shouldn't be one, I'm not gonna fuckin' use them.

I am. all of my body parts go to people who need them, and whatever else goes to science. If there is any part left of me, I want it cremated and the ashes given to my parents.

How old do you have to be to be an organ donor? I'm not now, but I would like to be. Once I'm dead I'm not using my body anyway.

The only thing that I chose not to donate was my eyes, that seems just to be too much, as far as blood donation I haven't been able to do that for 4 and a half years because I keep getting tattos ( you have to wait one year from the date of tattoo to donate blood and I never make it that long without getting more work done).

I've had the honor of going through my brother's medical school lab with cadavers. Seeing what they do has made me not want to donate my body. :)

Well, I'm undecided. Yes, my "essence" could be living in other people, but is that really what I want? Sometimes things just go too far. Plus, I want to look good for the funeral.

Organ donation does not scar the body in any significant way... You'd look great for your funeral. :)

Yes, they treat organ donations like a normal operation; they are clean, take out the organs, then stitch you back up.
Besides, how exciting to have bits of me living on after I myself have expired ;)

There is no age that you can sign up as a donor. In fact it would be better for all the teens and pre-teens here at warboards to become donors.Do you know how many kids die because there's no hears or kidneys or livers for them?Watch John Q.That movie sorta gave me a peek to what life is really like for some people.
Also who cares how you get buried WHEN YOUR DEAD?If you want to be cremated then be a donor,I mean its not like having more ashes is worth money you know? There's a story I read about how 6 people had a party thanking the person who saved ALL of their lives,by giving them organs.Only thing I worry about is having my organs taken out while i'm alive.-_-
If your a donor your life has a purpose just if you die.Imagine how many lives people who commit suicide could save if they were ALL donors?
If you get buried without a heart who cares? Is your family gonna ever look at you again? No.Your body will be in that box decomposing slowly.Wouldn't you like your tombstone to say,This man saved 6 lives. He is a TRUE hero.
I am not right now because I don't have my G2 ( which means I can drive on highways and by myself ) but once I get it I can check off a little button that says I am a donor. If I am in a car accident and am dying... why not give them to someone else who could use it. I know I would want an organ if I needed it.
I can't donate blood right now because I have to have a few heart tests done before I can donate. All because of a gay heart murmur that hasn't bugged me ever! stupid precautions

I am not right now but I want to be, if the only thing that is going to happend to my liver, kidneys, etc. is that they rot in some wooden case, I would prefer them to be put to good use.

As long as they actually use my organs and tissue to help save lives and don't just turn them into some fancy meal, I'm happy.

Being an organ donor is cool? I never realized that...

Around 8000 people die a YEAR Because they don't have organs to be given to them.

There is a point, donating the rest of oneself to be used as food for the homeless. Technically it is still saving lives.
although you wont find many volunteers...or people willing to eat them for that matter.

Besides, they have artificial hearts and stuff that can keep you alive, I think they even have ones you can live off the rest of your lives (seeings how they made artificial hearts 10 or so years ago).
Plus with all the stem cell research and whatnot...

Mmm, I watched a CSI episode where an organ donor was murdered because a mob boss's son needed a certain bodypart in order to survive. That part scares me a bit . . .
However, I'll likely become an organ donor when I'm of age to sign the papers. They can have everything but my brain ^_^. The brain I want bottled and preserved.

You know what, I'm going into Cryo. I certainly don't want some scientist to go, "Hey! He has the rare Asiantic Liver we need! Let's take it! I mean, he wouldn't notice, would he?"

Heh... the only argument I've heard in this thread against donating organs has been along the lines of, "No! Their mine! Mine! Mine! Mine! Mooom, he's trying to steal my organs!" No insult intended to those who do not wish to donate - I respect your decision - but I personally would've felt selfish to refuse to donate organs based on those arguments...

I didn't get the little dot on my drivers license this year, but I plan to sometime in the future. Wonderful thing about the US, your family has to be okay with it. I don't think that will pose a problem for me, but it's a shame that a person could want to donate but if the family is opposed there is nothing to be done. Once you're dead, you certainly can't contradict them.
Anyway, unless I die young, I doubt my heart will be of much use. My family has a history of heart disease and I doubt I'll be excluded. My family also has a history of diabetes, but I hope to prevent that.

Since this thread is over a few months old, I'm going to close it. I doubt that we can restart a conversation about Organ Donation, as everyone has already stated their beliefs. If you have any questions to why it was closed, blame it on Whiteknight.
