I decided that this doesn't belong in the Tech Annex, as it helps the general masses understand the latest breakthroughs in hard drive technology.

I'm now scared.
Na, just kidding, but that was weird, however entertaining it was.
So... Getting perpendicular will give us x10 the space... saweeta.

x) Yay. More space. Hmm... Do you think it will lower the prices?
OMG. 30 000 SONGS!!!!! WOW!!! That song was kinda catchy though. "Get Perpindicular!"

1,500 hours of songs... *Drools...*
The flash was nice and entertaining, but I decided to read the background behind perpendicular recording. It is a fascinating process; one that has the potential of revolutionizing data storage. Hitachi's documentation claims a 3.5 inch HDD will soon be able to support a capacity of 1 TiB. Impressive.

After the bit started singing, I was disgusted and turned it off. Too annoying to watch.

That was awesome. One thing though. They talk about bits being too close and then flipping and corrupting your data. Will putting them right up next to each other not have the same effect?
Not if you put them right. Bits have electrical current running through them, so they create a very tiny magnetic field. Other bits in the vicinity, which also have current running through them, will then experience a magnetic force depending on how close they are to the source of the field, but also the currents orientation relative to the field. If the current runs parallell with or against the magnetic field direction, no such force will be experienced. So all you have to do is to find a way to arrange the bits so that all magnetic forces and electrical currens are parallell, and then you got it.
Wow.
That was funny, disturbing, and informing all at the same time! Interesting concept though, I wonder what this will mean for drive prices though -- will they be more expensive becuase of this, or will the price hover around the same as it is now?
A terrabyte on a microdrive is nice and all, but if its going to cost $500 whats the point? o.O;;

Well, once we have HDs with a terrabyte of space, hopefully games and stuff won't lag. Unless you put too many on your computer...although that'd be alot of games...O_o

conjunction function whats your function. /school house rock
pretty intersting. i dont understand how the whole standing bit bit. isnt a bit just a 1 or a 0? essentially a magnetic switch thats on or off?

A magnetic switch cannot be on or off. Since there are two poles in magnetism, there is a possibility that a bit is N-S, and another one is S-N, and one is designated as 0, and the other as 1. When you "stand up" the bits, it dramatically decreases the possibility of interference with the polarity of a neighboring bit, and thus data corruption.
