Why are so many people doing it lately? Some of them even know they are doing it, and they keep doing it anyway. Don't they realize they are making a mistake? Or are they doing it to piss us off. Because I have seen several posts in which they even SAY they are thread reviving a 5 month dead thread, and they still post. I never used to see this happen before, but now it is happening all the time. Anyone have any ideas on why they are doing it, and how to get them to stop. I know we are banning, but that may be a little too harsh for certain cases, while appropriate for some. Or do we just let the Staff handle this.

I never really knew it was illega in the first place. What i do is I follow the threads. I take the top threads, talk on it, check the front page and then surf the related threads. I keep looking at related threads. Unfortunately, most of these threads are old...Besides, what's wrong with a little necroing? I mean, you're bringing up new topic, ok, a little old, but still, people are willing to talk on them.

The problem with thread necromancy is that the conversation has died - the participants are done with the issue and have moved on, so there's little chance that the previous conversation will resume. Also, it's exceptionally annoying to have a thread revived with a one-line post that borders on spam, anyway.

Reviving the thread does nothing more than bump it up to the top of the forum, which surprises people when they suddenly see a six page thread materialise overnight. Those who had seen the thread when it was alive generally don't care anymore, and those that didn't can't be bothered reading through it to make a valid post. So why should we allow it?

As for how to deal with it... there are really only two things you can do.

1. Ignore it. Don't post replies like, "You necroed!" because this just bumps it again.
2. Let the staff deal with it. That's what we're there for.

the staff has asked you on several occasions not to revive threads and that it was wrong. thought that you would have taken a hint.

Staredit.net has a system where every thread that's gone for something like 3 weeks without a new post is automatically locked. Can Warboards use one of those?

Sometimes a thread can be revived legitly, but it's very rare. I'd set the auto-lock to 2 months.

Can Warboards use one of those?this is a very good system, we should have everything automatically "deadlocked" after a set amound of time. It would be labeled "deadlocked" so they know it was locked because it was old. If a user wants to post a reply it could be redirected to an admin for review or something.

.. no.
if someone actually is able to add to an older thread, then i'll allow it.
however just pulling from the weeds to post nonsense is the common approach.

there is no need for every thread to be locked because you can't control yourselves.

Of course, when people DONT necro they often get talked at in no uncertain terms for creating duplicate threads. (Not that I do either)

the "nicknames" type threads are typical in this respect.

Of course, some older threads have been revived in a worthy way (one or to IR threads)

Quite frankly, we prefer you to create a fresh conversation on a given topic than to drag up old threads without posting anything substantial.

Some of our members do pipe up with, "OMG, this has been done before!!! <link to six-month old thread here>." Preferably our veteran members would just let it slide, rather than bashing our newer members and shying them away needlessly.

Really, the line between necroing a thread and recreating a topic is gray area, and you just have to use common sense when distinguishing between the two. I'm sure it's within everyones' capabilities to figure out whether a thread is too old to post in or too recent to duplicate.

personally, as a massive RPer, i only revive RPs i am active in because i don't want to see them fade away. but, if the staff is so hard on it (which i never actually realised), then i'll stop.

I took the hint, anyways. ;)
(Maybe I was somewhat 'rashy' in those days. Forgive me any eventual shunning I've made.)

But just to clear the reason on why am posting... I recently saw a "legalized prostitution v2 thread" or somethin' similar created in the IR section that was worthy, in my eyes at least, to bring that subject up again. (Even if it was on a slightly different angle than the other one carried out.) :)

Don't worry about thread revival too much in the RP forum. I will only lock an RP when the GM states that it's officially done, and the story is no longer continuing. When the story dies out due to a lack of time, etc., it's perfectly fine to revive it.

Is It OK, for the owners of a comic to revive their thread with a new comic? (this goes for portfolios as well), because My comic rate is slowing down, and no-one seems to reply much.

Either that, or the thread is >5 months old. Trust me, I have YET to see a thread come back from that long of a slump. And that's in my years of experience ;)

P.S. I take that back... There was one time where the creator revived his thread, but he changed like 90% of it... It went another week, and got locked, due to God Mods XD

Uhh... well in a common sense point of view, if many people aren't replying it means they aren't interested so why waste your time making new comics.

But if time isn't a concern of yours, I think you are allowed to post in an old thread of yours if it is some type of art collection and you are adding some art or whatever. But if you just say "bump" then that is thread necromancy.

As I said before (when drunk, no less), you just have to use common sense to figure out whether you should be reviving a given thread or not...

Wow, I just saw another thread that got thread revived. It is really annoying. I guess the best we can do is just report the post.

I've already been doin' it lately... even if I don't like those 'rat fink' subtleties that much. It's all we can do without sprouting the animosities, I guess. :o
