View Full Version : Best counter against Tank Push

For me it would have to be the melee units. Zealots do wonders against tanks, even if outnumbered sometimes.
Although tanks are powerless against basic air units, they are too weak to do significant amounts of damage in a short time. If you rely solely on them, chances are that your base will be in ruins by the time you wipe them out.
Ranged units are good, yeah, but they pretty much get owned by tanks wheather they're basic (rines) to advanced (gols). About half of them will get wiped out before they can even open fire on the tanks.
Spellcasters are very good against any units, true, but tanks' range will most likely kill them before they can cast their spells. However it depends on the situation.
There are certain tricks that enable you to kill tanks in unique ways. Once I've killed about seven tanks by dropping a unit in the center of the tank group where my opponent laid mines everywhere. It was fun to watch as the tanks get blown up by his own units. This isn't that reliable for me though.

Ok, zealots are only if good if the tanks are spread out and there are no supporting troops.
Let's play a game. Starcraft: Hypothetical Situations Yay! My favorite game.
Terran Tank Push (12 Tanks, 12 Marines)
If you are Terran:
Pull back. Set up your own Tank perimeter and wait for them to move into your position. Then fire like Hell!
If you are Zerg, I can't really suggest too much. Zerglings and Hydralisks are too weak and Dark Swarm is effective. Try Mutalisks but they are very weak. Guards are the best choice.
If you are Protoss, there are more answers. Zealots aren't good if the tanks are seperately massed. Dragoons are a little more effective but still not too good. Zealots/Reavers is a good choice. Distract them and them let the reavers shoot. High Templars and Archons are good because the Terrans probably hasn't teched to Sci Vessels. That means you might be able to use Dark Templars.
And for all races, if you can, just use Air. Unless they have Goliaths...

Yes, some units are very good at turning tanks into charred chunks, but sometimes your opponent starts to tank push you before you can get up to the godly guardians or Devious Dark Templars. So what is the best method of counter tank pushes while having limited types of units?

when a t player is doing a tank push against p, it is very likely that he will add spread turrets+mines. That's pretty normal, from my experience. Now, if ur p, then u should go dragoons, zeals, shuttle zeals, and ob, thats for sure. If psionic storm is added, its even better (just make sure u storm them AFTER u've sent ur main wave so that ur highs dont get killed easily). the drop zeals are for the tanks. You just drop ur zeals right on tanks when u attack.

a tank/vult/turret push may easily beat a toss in costeffectiveness, but because a tank push is so immobile, you dont have to be cost effective as toss, just make sure you always outexpo the terran and dont lose too many econ to ship/vult harass.
get a zeal/goon mix (more goons then zeals, when you attack the push and you see all youre zeals have died and the terran has a lot of units left, then retreat youre goons and get new zeals) with maybe dt/ht support, dont try to kill the terran with this, try to slow down his push and making sure he doesnt get to kill any of youre expoes, then just switch to 2 (or more) gate carriers and finish him off with these.
make sure he doesnt get any more expoes besides his nat and min only.
dragonpaladin... thats wrong.

the only right thing in this thread is what i wrote, if you want to win games, follow my advice.
well, what red_ice said is not too wrong, but it didn't cover so much of it...

Well, quite frankly, even the scrubbiest player would tell that tanks > dragoons, so no, I don't believe...get more zealots or even dark templars than dragoons.

DragonPaladin, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
Yes, some units are very good at turning tanks into charred chunks, but sometimes your opponent starts to tank push you before you can get up to the godly guardians or Devious Dark Templars. So what is the best method of counter tank pushes while having limited types of units?
Flank or attack plus zealot drop on his tanks or reaver/dt drop his base or just contain him with ranged goons so he has to slow push out instead of being able to roll right up to your choke.
