"2 hours ago UPDATED -3 HOURS -13 MINUTES AGO VATICAN CITY - Pope John Paul II delivered an Easter Sunday blessing to tens of thousands of people in St. Peter's Square, but the ailing pontiff was unable to speak and managed only to greet the saddened crowd with a sign of the cross, bringing tears to many.

Aides had readied a microphone, and the pope tried to utter a few words from his studio window overlooking the square. But after making a few sounds, he just blessed the crowd with his hand and the microphone was taken away.

Vatican watchers had been anxiously awaiting John Paul's appearance for signs of how the 84-year-old pontiff was faring after Feb. 24 surgery to insert a tube in his throat to help him breathe. After the dramatic appearance, many in the crowd cried or applauded in sad appreciation for John Paul's pained efforts to greet them on the holiest day of the church calendar"-here (http://www.comcast.net/news/index.jsp?cat=GENERAL&fn=/2005/03/27/91970.html)(I don't know if non members can view the page, if need be, I'll copy and paste the whole thing)

EDIT: the thread title should be Pope, not pop

Poor Jean Paul... I really think they should appoint another Pope and let the old man rest. Don't know if it's possible, though. I have to admit I look up him, with all he's gone through.
On a side note, kong... your thread title says "Pop unable to speak". You might want to fix that before it's too late.

Heard it on NPR this morning. Not too surprising, although I had hoped he would be on the recovery.

And I'm sure you've noticed by now that you mispelled Pope in the thread title. ;)

EDIT: Zelt beat me to it... -_-

He can talk, just not to a crowd. The story said that it takes more to talk to a crowd than it does to talk to one person, and he can't talk because of his recent surgery. I do think it's time for a new pope, but not for those reasons.

Yes, there are different reasons, that is just one of my reasons. We need a pope who is more capable to get out to the people and such.. granted he is always riding in that "pope mobile" we need one that can talk to large crowds and just more active and doesn't have people worrying about him all the time. One that can do stuff on his own and not have surgery after surgery and the like.. yeah.. just some of the reasons..

I get what ya mean... but this isn't a "why we need a new Pope" thread, is it?

Thanks for the fix, and I think there was an assasination attempt on the Pope a few years back.

Omg, seriously. If they have any shred of decency for him, they should appoint someone else and let him rest peacefully. Being the pope I imagine can be a very stressful job, and for an old man who can't even speak without straining himself, he should have been retired already. He's going to work himself to death and have a heart-attack if this keeps up.

He sent me a card by mail with his blessing but I accidently bent it. Well, if he's sick, he got to rest. I mean, he's a mortal man.

Well, He didn't DIRECTLY address it to me. It's more like a sourvenri with a picture of him and his blessing. Well, blessing may be too strong a word. I really hate that it's bent.

By doctrine, a pope cannot be appointed unless the present pope resigns or dies.

Then why the hell does'nt he resign?! He's almost killing himself over there! I guess there's just some principles I don't see my way to like they do I guess. I dunno.

Only two, that I remind of. One, in '81 (not really sure wich date) in my country at Fatima's holy sanctuary celebration and another I believe that got the Pope mobile into work. ;)

By doctrine, a pope cannot be appointed unless the present pope resigns or dies.
As I recall it, a new Pope can only be 'assigned' (read choosen), only after the postumous one.

As for my personal opinion on this subject... here it is (http://www.warboards.org/showpost.php?p=163270&postcount=18). :)

Faith in religion leads to great things, I suppose, oh great rival of mine in Mini Chopper(you're lucky I lose my attention fast, because your high score would be so screwed otherwise)

I don't see why people will be so shocked when John Paul dies. When he was having surgery or when he was in the hospital or something a few months back millions of people prayed for him. I'm not saying i want him to die but he's 84 years old. He's still human and has to die sometime. And I agree with what other people are saying. That we should get a new Pope.

DragonPaladin

But we are, after all, only human.

Dragon, please stop posting disjointed usless statements, it doesn't help your reputation here at WB.

I think we should give the poor guy a rest, but as doctrine says, no new popes until the old one dies.

I hope that the Pope and all the ill persons can get well soon...And that thing that he cannot be replaced is just dumb. He has earned his retirement, they should let him rest the last years of his life. Isn't this against compassion and charity? (Oh I forgot, the Catholic church doesn't preach those) Or maybe the Pope doesn't want to retire, he wants to prove again that faith can do anything, that's just amazing...Really.

on the other hand, he is very bloody determined, fair play to him for caarrying on his job even in his condition. (like you said though, he has no choice)

Im not a religeous type, but I respect him.

Maybe he just wants to die as a "matyr" or somethine like that. It would look good if he died serving the Catholic church..

All other Popes have done that, except for a couple that resigned and the one that was killed when Freiderick Barbarossa invaded Italy, so dying as a martyr(btw, what's a matyr, anyway?)isn't what he would be if he died. I just think he likes his job.

The Pope has a feeding tube now, supposedly for better calcium intake, I believe. Those feeding tubes are getting a lot of publicity nowadays.

He's still dedicated to the Church, he still has an active role in the Vatican's day to day operations. There is no need for another Pope.

The Pope is still alive. He is close to death, however, and will probably die tonight or tomorrow morning.
