View Full Version : How many members does WarBoards get in a day?

Really, how many? Last I checked, we had 18,045 members, and on a more recent check, we have 18,081. If we gain 36 members in 6 hours, how many in 24?

Well... let's see... if we count the amount of days WarBoards has been open for public consumption (starting at Feb 8th) then WB has been open for 412 days (2004 was a leap year, after all). Since we, as of this typing, have 18,082 members, the math comes out to... 43.888 members/day. This means that a new member joins WarBoards every 32 minutes, 49 seconds.

Not too long ago, I compiled a list of new users by month because I'd always been curious and I was pretty bored. I figured the month with the most amount of new users would have been February of '04, but I was wrong. The number to the left of the :: is the amount of new members for that month, and the number to the right is the total amount of members in WB as of that month.

Amount of new users by month:
Jan. '04 - 10 :: 10 (6 accounts were deleted during this month, so they aren't counted)
Feb. 8th '04 - 106 :: 116 (Public opening day)
Feb. '04 - 520 :: 530
March '04 - 841 :: 1371
April '04 - 1364 :: 2735
May '04 - 1438 :: 4173
June '04 - 1596 :: 5769
July '04 - 1716 :: 7485
Aug. '04 - 1697 :: 9182
Sept. '04 - 1469 :: 10651
Oct. '04 - 1539 :: 12190
Nov. '04 - 1223 :: 13413
Dec. '04 - 1179 :: 14592
Jan. '05 - 1272 :: 15864
Feb. '05 - 1174 :: 17038

Go EdvardMunch, how informative! Wow, we're not doing too badly.

Whoops, I screwed up, there's 366 days in a leapyear, not 357! (I turned 365 into 356, lol) That means WB is 412 days old.

/me shakes his head in embarassment.

Since a new member joined in between the old post and my correction, I'll update the stats:

That's 43.888 new members per day, and a new member every 32 minutes, 49 seconds.

It isn't that hard to do, but I applaud you for taking the initiative. That's just amazing.. But howmany actually stay to post?

Zeltaris

2180.
That's the number of members who have more than 1 post, at least.

that rules out over 17,000 members Oh you just wait
When you narrow it down to members with 75 posts or more it drops down to 234.

It wasn't that hard to do at all.

The closest we can come to an estimation of active members is to do an active members roll call thread, like what dunchy did back in October. (http://www.warboards.org/showthread.php?t=5721&highlight=Active+Members+Roll+Call) After a thread necromancy a month and a half after the thread died, the active member roll call was up to 71 members, with the 71st member, Garrec, posting at 11/26. On Novemeber 26th, there were 13263 members. Although some members of the roll call list likely were no longer active, we can assume they were replaced with active members, so as best as we can, the amount of active users on Nov. 26th was 71. Do the math and that means .5353% of members were active. If we apply that number to the current user amount of 18085, we have an approximate active user base of 97 users.

For a more accurate count of users, another active member roll call thread should be conducted (the last one was closed). However, having people post whether they are currently active is not the best way to conduct a survey. For one thing, not all people frequent the members lounge. The best way would be to send PMs to each and every one of those 18085 people and then count how many PMs you receive back. Of course, that is difficult to nth degree and so not worth it.

So, to sum up from my unnecessarily long post:
- As of 11/26, the amount of active users was approximately 71 people
- Then, .5353% of the total WB population was active
- Now, we can estimate that 97 WB users are active

That's pretty sad, and that's people who have over 1 post. Im betting most either come for the arcade, or forget about us entirely.

Hey Zelt, thou of the chocolatey udders, how did you find out how many users have at least 1 post?

It's called member's list. Foo
Hah. All I did was run a search on the members list, arrange it by descending postcount and filter out all results that were worth zero or less. I got 109 pages, with 20 results per page.
108*20= 2160, plust another 20 results on the last page = 2180.
There. As you said, it wasn't that hard :D

Click on the picture to make it more readable.

Keep in mind the graph shows the number of posters who have at least the number of posts on the x-axis.

Isn't it impressive that the graph you made hammock has this distinct curve pattern to it. I wonder if we could make a formula that summarises the depth of that curve, which we could compare to other forums to see how we're doing with keeping members posting.

I hardly think post count is a good basis for judging any kind of "elite" members.

According to that chart, theoretically if a member hits 100 posts chances are that he/she will most likely remain at warboards :)

I've hit like .... 345 I think.
And nope I've seen some guys in other forums who hit 8739 ( in 2 years time) and then stop, life just goes on like some people say :P

WTF? Why is Nahotnoj's nick changed to BSTRhino or is that some freakish bug that's happening to my comp.
Wait a miute why is Zeltaris Nahotnoj...... ok now I'm really confused....

No, I meant it as in there are only few. I didnt mean elite in that kind of way.

No, they all are using the same avatar and signature.

Haha, for a second, I thought Nahotnoj was a mod because his name was highlighted orange, and then I realized it was BSTRhino.

Wait a miute why is Zeltaris Nahotnoj...... ok now I'm really confused.... For some reason BSTRhino, Nahotnoj, Markpyro and Zeltaris all have the same siggy & avy, my guess is - something happened on IRC, but that doesn't really matter does it?
btw... what happends to First Second and Third? I'm still Fourth... ^_>

Also, the theory of 'users with more than 100' posts is based on the fact that someone either posts or not, if not he won't reach 100, and if he/she is than they'll get to 100 n' keep goin'.

It will be more interesting to see when most people stopped posting - but that's harder to check becaue you'll have to go over all the members with more than 100 posts and check if they've posted in the last month.
Or if someone can write a script that does that...

I did a quick check of members with over a 100 posts, and a few of them hadn't been around for around half a year. And then there are members just under 100 posts who are currently active and will most likely stick around. As for finding last date of activity...something like a search engine spider could comb through all the pages of member profiles and create a spreadsheet. Now, who's up for a little programming (or hijacking a google spider =P)?
