View Full Version : Sex in the Media
Does anyone think the media goes overboard with sex or sex-joke related materials?
I for one don't like that kind of stuff. I don't find it particularly funny and when I watch TV with my parents I get really uncomfortable when sex material comes up on a show or movie.
Anyone else have these kind of views?

I agree in the aspect that I'm sick and tired of the media basing their entire strategy on the premise that "sex-sells". I'm bored already of gratuitous sex scenes in virtually every movie I see.
The other day I saw this ad, for example, where there's this skateboarder bloke and all of a sudden this random chick walks up to him and shoves her tongue down his throat. Scene changes and we see the skateboarder fella catching up to some chick in a car. He makes out with her. The scene changes again. It's the chick now. She meets some fella at the disco and they're all over each other frenching 5 seconds later. The ad was about gum.
Dumb, no?

I agree, "sex sells" has gotten way out of hand.

I get pissed off whenever someone has decided to use/sell sex rather than make a quality product.

Yeah, I think it's way out of hand too. The whole TV culture has gone crazy, sex-driven dramas and lots of "reality" TV. There are really only a few good quality shows now.

Any Disney shows or SPONGEBOB!!!!!
Disney movies are full of little adult themes.
Sexual themes do make shows attractive, particularly with an adolescent male audience. However many shows fall under that horrible classification in which we include most movie sequels: the studio just duplicated the original and thought it would be good because the original was good. The movie and television industries are so focused on ratings and box-office sales that they rarely attempt anything fresh. So those of us who want something engaging or thought provoking are left out in the cold by the major producers and networks.
Now that my industry rant is finished, yes the media has gone too far with sexual themes.

Acctually Spongebob's main viewers are 14-18. And yes like in my post for Pet Swap T.V. sucks now and the good shows (Spongebob, Enterprise and others) get canceled in favor of "Reality TV" or the dreaded SOAP OPERA *BUMM BUMMM BUMMMM* Back on subject did you know that for Bell Express Vu Sex TV is in the basic chanel group? So now I say we remove our hats, bow our heads and mourn for the loss of good TV. *Lt.Hawk Removes his toque and takes a minute of silent rememberance*

It is the sexual concept wich grabs the attention. They know it sells but I think there is a bigger underlying problem.
That problem is that we've lost our sense of modesty. I've said this in other threads here, and this fits. Think 50 years ago. A on-screen movie kiss could not last more than 10 seconds. Now, I am forced to see couples fucking each other on screen. I haven't seen one recent movie that doesn't have a sexual joke to it.
Normally we would have complained. But for some reason our human psyche wants more. We keep going these movies and supporting these threads. It's horrible.
Today, in the hour of TV that I watched, I've seen too many sexual connotations. In the radio, I heard two ads. One for breast enlargement, and one for penis enlargement / impotence. What the hell is wrong with society? Yes, we need sex to procreate but I don't want it fucking shoved up my face every where I look.

Here's the funny part: A study "shows that viewers who watched television programs with sexually explicit or violent content were less likely to remember the advertisements that followed than those who viewed programs containing no sex or violence." Sex doesn't sell, it costs. (The rest of the article) (http://www.apa.org/monitor/oct02/sex.html)
It's really quite funny, all of the myths in the media. Take, for example, the myth that young, white males are the most profitable audience, despite that films marketed to minorities and women tend to do extremely well (Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Drumline, Titanic, Under the Tuscan Sun). The studios aren't the only ones who target too narrow of an audience, though they are one of the few who haven't noticed. Clothing lines are recently waking up to the fact that teens have been overemphasized too much and are now creating chains of stores targetted at middle-aged adults. The studios just have themselves so self-deluded, that I wouldn't be surprised if every TV show were about farting toasters because they thought that was the new big thing.

Its outrageous. Take for example the show 'ER'. It used to be a great show, but now all the sex scenes and love dramas are making it overly corny. Even Saturday night live! "Gays in Space" and random other now frequent skits are beginning to tear away at SNL's reputation. Why is this? Is America becoming less mature? Of course. In France, (from what I've heard) nude beaches, and nude scenes on tv dont get a second look, because men and women dont snicker or start ridiculus lawsuits. Kids in school today are wearing clothes that are up to their ribcages, and shorts that are less than 6 inches long that hang low down on their hips.... School administrators try to stop it, but it isnt the kids faults. They see all their favorite stars wearing the same thing!
<insert good conclusion here>

Hmm... well, either this calls for more censorship or some kind of action to be taken. From what I have read, kids in late elementary and middle school are too sucked into "tongue-in-cheek" humour to care about anything else, and it seems sex is what obsesses this world now. Of course, if more censorship is in place, people get angry and start to ask questions, questions the government may or may not like. I forgot where I was taking this thread, but I geuss schools should just enact a uniform and stick with that, and the goverment should start to enact laws that require at least some modesty. If I remember correctly, a few years back, some famous person went to an award ceremony with a bare breast, the only thing that was covered was her nipple. if such things are allowed to continue, I fear the some kind of revolution shall have to take place to get the people in power to listen.

If I ever see a movie nowadays, even PGs, they akways have hints of sex and sex. My Gmail spambox is flooded with ads for Viagra, penis/breast enlargement and other things which no-one wants. at least they go into teh spambox

regarding sexuality and the media, I thought this (http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Movies/03/21/film.thompson.reut/index.html) was pretty interesting :)
But anyways, I think it's OK if there's an occasional joke or two on programs dealing with sexual themes but it's taken too far. I mean seriously, there are people out there who think Spongebob is gay.
Heh, and the Disney having adult themes reminds me of Alice in Wonderland...hehehe.

No, no, no. Spongebob IS gay! The Novosti Press agency said so!
