Do you think Spyware should be made illegal? If you think about it it's like a virus, it enters your computer and can cause great damage to it. Even worse it's stealing your privacy, something we should all be able to retain. It's similiar to the whole 'big brother' ordeal, some higher being watching what you do, gathering information.

Personally I think it should be made illegal, it's collecting information about you that nobody else has the right to know unless you give them your consent, and you're definitely not giving your consent to the spyware.

But when you agree to the EULA on a program you are saying "hey it's ok to install" people just don't read that far. And it isnt that hard to get rid of, a simple 5 minute scan cleans you up. Adaware, spybot search and destroy, spysweeper and tons others.

True, but still, why should they even add those? Shouldn't they respect your privacy? Sadly this world is all about money now.

I do agree that everyone should have their own privacy, but honestly, if you have something THAT secret on a PC, it's probably not legal either :P.

And like normal computer viruses, catching those who create spyware would be ridiculously difficult . . .

I think aslong as they make it incredibly clear (no hidden statements saying they can) then it's ok.

Those people that install stuff without you knowing what it is or what it does should be not be illegal, but as long as they tell you what you are installing and not going behind your back it’s ok. I mean honestly, who is going to install stuff like that if they knew about it. I would like to see ad-ware apps go also.

I know of a couple of people who know what spyware is and install it anyways (kazaa).

Should be made illegal, but won't lets face it. We all know how LONG things take to go through the courts these days. They've got backlog for like six months and I don't think they'll be payin much attention to a whining teenager.

Duddits thinks that Spyware should be made illegal. Duddits doesn't like spyware, though he is too lazy to download KaZaA lite.

Duddits likes the / me feature, but isn't / me'ing. He is merely talking in the third person.

Just because you don't like or disagree with something doesn't mean it should be made illegal. I find nothing wrong with spyware. Though it certainly can be a hassle at times. Technically they are restricted by laws already in place to send to their servers only information that is not personally identifiable. As was mentioned before, spyware is extremely easy to get rid of, and if you cared enough about your privacy you would take preventative action.

The majority of spyware falls under two categories:
1. Causes pop-ups and pop-unders on your screen.
2. Sends information about your web usage back to the company.

1. There are all kinds of popup blockers that work extremely effectively. Some even offer other helpful services, such as the Google toolbar.
2. How will the sending of this information ever going to cause you any harm, unless the FBI is on your tail? This information is sold to various media companies, who then use it to further tailor their content and services to what is demanded by the people.

Google bar is hockxxored. Duddits read on multiple anti-Google websites that they add patches to the toolbar without even asking. And if they can add on to the toolbar in secret, what's stopping them, besdies multiple laws forbidding it (Duddits thinks), from uploading viruses/worms/tojan (Trojan Man!) into your toolbar.

Duddits thinks google is evil. Duddits thinks that once they have enough users of the Google toolbar, then they will upload viruses to every toolbar out there and kill all computers and the internet as we know it. No Warbaords or virtual porn is hell for Duddits.

Uhh, if they killed the internet, their business would be screwed over, like a fish out of water...

And to Hammocksleeper, I'm not saying I have a problem with it, I have Ad-Aware, which takes care of it for me (well most of it I guess). It's just something that would be nice, so we wouldn't have to go through all the hassle in getting rid of it / blocking it.

But if they are terrorists, like Duddits thinks, then they wouldn't care. They would have enough money and power to do a coup de'tat round the world while everybody is in choas and take over. Can you imagine what life would be like if Google ran the world?! CAN YOU IMAGINE A REAL-LIFE POP-UP!? THE HORROR!

Google ruling the world eh? Hmm, it wouldn't be too bad, though we'd all have to change our names to end in "oogle" so I would be "B-Hoogle". And the only colours that would be around would be blue, red, yellow, and green. Could be interessting...

We'd have every question we had answered with the flick of the dime . . . with several thousand other rubbish results at hand. We'd dress up on every special day, including Chinese New Year. We'd translate entire pages of text into any language we want in a matter of seconds.

Life, would be good.

Duddits you scare me dude.

Spyware is still beyond retarded.

If you want to advertise your projects, pick a fucking site that is related and advertise!

I mean really, wtf is all this? Adaware, Spyware, Malware period all over the place.

Do these companies really make money off of that? I would never ever click on a banner ad that came from my computer -- offline or from a program.

Whats really funny is that google is huge -- and thier own ads (The Google "AdSense" I believe its called) is everywhere now becuase its not bullshit. They dont try to use popup ads, etc...

Like remember BF awhile ago had banner ads rotating and theyd have to deal with popups every now and again? Like the fucking business didnt realize "hey its no popups but lets use one anyways!!!"

Oh weel >_<

I want to see the people who code this shit to have to use a computer with it installed 15 ways from hell and see how they like thier computer screwed over, slow as fuck, and unable to do anything becuase 15 programs are all running cataloging what your doing -.-

And there should be no reason for spyware -- period. If I dont buy something, or go look it up myself, then why the fuck am I going to click on an ad? Its like serving ads for Starcraft from Starcraft itself. I have the game, why do I want to buy it again?

I tried adaware, and that doesn't stop everything. Spybot Search and Destroy works pretty well, but it also disables certain programs I need, (NOt kazaa)...
