A Bit of Advice [Archive]

I've been absent for a while as I am now living with a friend with a shitty net connection (Even worse than my 49.9K dialup connection; his maxes out at 28.8!), but I thought I'd stop by to give you guys a bit of advice.

When you are installing a new game that comes with a version of DirectX newer than the one you've got installed, and it installs that new version of DirectX, and asks you to restart before playing, DO IT.

I know if it doesn't do the DX thing, you can always just play without restarting, and game developers are silly. But DirectX is pretty heavy stuff, in that it kinda powers damn near every game in the f'ing universe.

AKA, if you don't restart, and your game crashes, your Direct X files tend to get corrupted. And guess what? After ~DX7.0 or so, you can't uninstall and then reinstall. And when the core .dll's are screwed up, it can be impossible to reinstall from the same game that installed the new version. And you can't install an old version over it, then moving back to the newest, because the old versions believe the newest copy is still present.

AKA, you spend four hours attempting to salvage your computer from total meltdown.

So remember kids, restarting is important.

And Knights of the Old Republic can burn in Hell.

I have always restarted my comp after upgrading DirectX.

Though it sucks to know that you are stuck with a the less than good net connection for the time being, however at least you know that we will still be here when you get back. ;)

You can uninstall it, Google something called DirectX Eradicator. What I do is never install it from whatever game is asking for it, I always download form MS and of course I do reboot.

Freaky, I wonder if they'll make Xcube babies...could be an interesting development for Microsoft and Nintendo, combined they would surely take out the PS2...hmm maybe I'll look into this :shiftyr:.

The PC is by far the best gaming platform. It's upgradeable for the latest games, and you just can't play a FPS properly on a console. Also, DX isn't that bad; just keep it up to date. Plus, if you think restarting once is a bitch, you try restarting at least nine times trying to install an ATI TV card. Good thing I can be patient when I want to be.

Anyways, the original poster and the 28.8 --> Get a new modem. They cost like I dont know, $20 and thats why your speed is low. I can garuntee that almost every ISP in the US (Dial Up wise) are somehow able to handle 56k :p

Then again if your using AOL I have no sympathy :P

BTW, PS2 and GCN owns the Xbox. I dont care about your fucking Halo, or your 50 pound shit box ;( Any backwards compatible with its earlier games automatically is awesome, and on top of that PS2 has been out longer then the other two and somehow is still in the top ;D Cant wait for PS3. Backwards Compatibilty? Hell yeah please!

Definetly helps cut down on space... When you think about it, I dont want to switch between a PSX and PS2 just to play a game >.>

Yeah that's fully dumb the price, but the servers run loops around the ps2. I've played both.

Heehee, what if I told you I'm playing SNES and N64 even PS1 games on my Xbox right now? Backwards compatibility is very very easy with the Xbox, it's basically a mini computer. Now I'm off to play Ninja Gaiden 3 for my Xbox..err..Nintendo, then I'm going to play Ninja Gaiden remake for my X-box, all on the same console, life is good.

Ah, yes... driving around for hours on that runway level in the tank, killing hundreds of helpless soldiers with the slo-mo cheat on. Those were the days...

Actually, I still have my N64 in the closet, I could conceivably get it out again... But no. Those days have to stay in the past. *Sigh.

You can modify a xbox without a sauder gun, it's all about the bios hack : ))

Besides, modifying is fun! i do it to my body, car, console, computer....wow, what fun : )

Toatlly insane isn't it? Even trying to load up files into that thing is a burden.

GC is more network with your computer for moddable stuff, such a shame the Panasonic version of the GC *built in dvd player* never came to the states, but you still can't beat the 99 dollar price tag!

Actually, Duddits' German teacher has visted these forums. She wanted to see Duddits' Pie Wars story (lol... she's 55 years old and a Pie Wars fan. heh) so Duddits gave her the adderess to warboards.

You have to consider that Pie Wars isn't even a year old yet ;). That's what Pie Wars 4's gonna be all about. Our anniversary and an asskicking for Cyberkid. (anniversary is May 5th)

One thing though, Pie Wars 2 was exactly 45,000 words long. Right now, Duddits' story is 11,134 words long and is only halfway through Part 3. PW is gettin better and better DC :D

PW is getting better and better, but the DKS (practically) have been going strong for 2 years straight, and with me getting into the hapit of my writing tallents that I have placed aside since the downfall of the DragonStar Tavern at BF. I will (hopefully) try to make the DKS even longer and better than the one before. :)
Ditto... The cool thing about Pie Wars is that one of my teachers actually wants to try and get it published. Now all Duddits has to do is get the rights to it and Duddits will be all set. Of coures the porblem would have never started if he would have attack (C)Pie Wars Inc. 2003-2004 to the first three Pie Wars'.
