View Full Version : Arcade?

Hey, when browsing tro the net, I always come across some vBulletin boards, and I saw that they all have an arcade section.
Now I was wondering why Warboards doesn't have it, since it's also vBulletin.
Maybe get it up? I, for one, would love it, I dunno about you guys tho.

And besides, you guys gotta keep in check with BF ;) :p
It has been discussed amongst the staff, but that's about as far as it went.... for now. :)

Since vB3 gold will be coming out soon, it would be better to wait until then. The arcade requires modifying lots of PHP, and several people don't want to have to add the arcade code now and have to add it again after vB gold is out. :)
But.... but..... B.F. did it! ;)

I don't believe in us outright competing with the Legacy Network. Just because they have an arcade doesn't mean we have to have one.
Also, I don't really believe the BlizzForums guys would go insane. They're probably just laughing at how they will crush us so easily. I mean, even if I continued working as hard as I have on StarCraft.org for the past few months, we still could never compete with StarCraft Legacy, it's just the way the universe works and there's nothing we can do, so let's just accept it. Anyway, my goal isn't to get more visitors. It's to get more satisfied visitors.

Bleh, arcades don't really have much appeal to me :P. I'll play occasionally, but I don't see a point to waste the bandwidth.
Anyway, I was champ at Target Challenge at Blizzforums for a while, but they removed my score because I used an exploit to get it. Now they're just threatening me to tell them how I got such a high time/score :P.

BlizzForums current Administration also banned myself and several respected staff members for no reason at all, other than that they got caught up in a moment of excited paranoia that led to irrational and unfounded decisions.
Having realised their mistake, they were gracious enough to unban me, yet refuse to either 1. reinstate me (not a concern as I had resigned a month previously anyway) 2. appolgise (gg common courtesy) or 3. grant me the traditional Forum Elder status.
I don't feel we need to compete with them merely for the fact that they put me in mind of a pack of greedy, immature little children. I for one feel that I'm above such bullshit.
An arcade would be a nice break from posting, but I'm content to wait until such a time as it's convenient for the people who have to deal with the implementation to be ready.

I'm all for an arcade, just not now. Once we get more bandwidth and can upload bigger files (hint hint ;)), I think (if we have bandwidth and space to spare) that we should have an arcade here. =P
BlackHawk

Or instead of directly copying them, we think of something creative on our own? Now that would be cool, and honestly the arcade will only be used the first few days in the hype, then it will die out in a weeks time, and will only be played occasionaly. You want something that lasts.
Graeme
03-09-2004, 10:45 PM
Yeah, we need something really original. You know what's always original, and lasts years upon years? MMO GAMES! I think what we need is something like a MMOFishing game available to all members of Warboards . . .
Yes, you heard me correctly:
Massively Multiplayer Online Fishing
It's exactly like every other horrid fishing game that you've ever played, but with a twist! Every fish you catch, could affect what happens in the massive fishing world, miles away! You could kill all the fish in the Grand Banks, and kill Canada's fishing economy, and you could even slaughter pirahnas in the Amazon, stopping the deaths of hundreds of innocent travellers (if that's where pirahnas are even native to . . . ). I can honestly say the possibilities WOULD BE ENDLESS!
I've even come up with a name: Corrupt Serpentines. People would refer to it as CS though. Note: I realize the name has nothing to do with the game, as of yet. But believe me, I'll think of a way to tie it in.
BlizzForums current Administration also banned myself and several respected staff members for no reason at all, other than that they got caught up in a moment of excited paranoia that led to irrational and unfounded decisions.

Ok everyone let's not talk about old news anymore (BF) and try to concentrate more on how to make Warboards the best damn Blizzard community ever. :)
The Arcade syatem WILL be implemented, that much is certain because it was AJ who said that we will eventually be adding an arcade. (not in those exact words, mind you) I'll search for the post that AJ made as evidence here shortly. :D

Well, I had the idea of making our own game. Like that Battlegrounds: Evolution thing. Look at all our expertly skilled programmer admins... along with our graphic designer... you'd think we could make use of our competitive advantage here and program something unique?
What do you think? Is that a good idea? A better idea?

2 bad I'm just starting in Flash, so I have no flash/program skills (yet).
BSTRhino
03-10-2004, 4:46 PM
It's too bad the admins have so much else to do... but I agree, it'd be so much better than any arcade. The skills we have over here is one of the only competitive advantages we have, so we should use that.
So, let's talk of ideas. Something solid might inspire someone to do some work.
I've always wanted to do a thing like the game stars: http://www.crisium.com/stars but less complicated and more StarCrafty. Like, you have to find minerals and gas on planets, asteroids, or whatever, upgrade your technology, increase your colonists, and take over the universe with your fleets. It'd be like an MMO turn based strategy!
Flash. Heh. I've learnt Java. It's gonna come in handy for p3ngu!n. Hi p3ngu!n!!!

03-10-2004, 5:33 PM
Mmmhmm, yeah that's what I was thinking. Scratch the MMOFishing idea for a second.
Honestly though, we need get a multiplayer game (perhaps 10-20 people per game, java-applet style, or just make it a massive game, allowing anyone to play at anytime php-style). The game would have to be fun to play, but still allow the people playing it, to post on the forums (so not-so much pause-option, but quick enough that it isn't boring, but slow enough that people could minimize, post a message, and get back to it). Something similar to an RTS-style game would work perfectly.
I was thinking we could do a mix of Diplo, Politics (if any of you remember the BF, and now the WB politics), an RTS game, and light RPG-style game. Basically, we'd make a made-up world (we'd have a map that changes based on what happens in turns) where each person would be able to be responsible for their government/country. There would be daily turns, where a person would get points to move certain armies, buy upgrades, buy advanced units, etc. Then they would be able to move their units, and do a certain # of actions. Hmm, probably elaborating too much here . . . :P.
Anyway, that's my two cents.
While we're on the topic of making this a great community, perhaps we should get an IRC community going. I know these IRC channels have died in the past, but we just need a few dozen idlers, and a few active people to get it off the ground :P. I'm positive we could make it work. Perhaps, once we become established enough in IRC, we could even start a WarBoards IRC server?
the fact that they just sensored \/\/ and arboards.org, they are competing. They don't want anyone coming to warboards. We do have to compete but not blindly. Arcades will come sooner or later, and better.

Hehe, that was an exaggeration of what might [ok, what my crazy mind hypothesized] have happened. But of course the move contributed at least a little bit to the fast installment of the arcade; I don't think that the arcade would have been installed this early [especially on RC4] if the move didn't happen. But of course pressure from users or high-ranking people could have done it too. :)

Pity, it was an excellent idea. You'll have to resort to inserting vB tags into "warboards" then.

As for the BF <--> WB shit. Well there needs to be a little restraint.
Things will cool down, and right now, MacG, the only reason I see no one mad at you is becuase RC is on Spring Break.
What RC decided on with censoring Warboards was childish but in thier right. Take the high road :)
Anyways I am considering setting up a redirect so I can link directly here through kupatrix (IE: wb.kupatrix.com) so I can use the link on BF.
Whats funny is that in censoring WB I inadvertantly realized that you can censor outwars.com and screw with all the noobies
