Generally, the secondary instrument is weaker than the primary. Hence the whole Primary/Secondary thing. I own at vocal percussion though. Bow to me! :D

I wouldn't say secondary is weaker than the primary instrument. The secondary instrument is usually the harmony, used to compliment the melody of the first instrument. Without a harmony, the first instrument would just sound cruddy. However, this isn't always the case. Some songs make use of counter-melodies.

I know some songs built so far on melodies and counter-melodies that it's impossible to distinguish the first and second instruments. The only *real* way you can tell, is by the fact that second is usually a few tones lower than first, and third is a few lower than second.

Of course, the differentiation in tones also doesn't determine the difficulty of the piece. Try playing a low c flat on an alto saxaphone in sixteenth notes :P.

I was referring to the concept of playing two instruments. Where the primary instrument of a person is one that more time has been dedicated to and therefore is better/stronger and the secondary and on are "weaker" by comparison. I'm really not that good of a drummer. I started learning about a year an a half ago, and stopped taking lessons after about 4-5 months because I didn't have the time.

ZeroDarkStar

No, I'd say I'm better than the average amuteur set player, but not good enough to go pro.

Yeah, I know, I'm not humble.

I am the über awesome cymbal player of the NW 'burbs. I was going to play cymbals for Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps based out of Waukesha, WI, but I decided I had too many plans for the summer to dedicate myself to it this year. Next year though, I will dominate! Unless the Madison Scouts have a cymbal line next year, in which case I'm auditioning with them first.

So yeah, seen any Drum Corps shows in your days?

Tam-tams don't even look like gongs o.O

OboeGuru

quads are where it's at it any marching band. and timpanis in concert/symphonic band :D

OboeGuru
02-09-2004, 11:16 PM
People who play quads are n00bs. If you say you played tenors I'll de-n00bify you. :D I say tenors because that's what they're called in Drum Corps and because our "quads" have a shot drum mounted on the horizontal crossbar to which the other drums are attached by hinges. So they're really "quints" :p

henrywonderchimp
02-09-2004, 11:42 PM
lol.. i fear no oboe player  i should n00b-ify you by the simple fact the i've got 9 more years experience :p
