I need some new RAM, and from what I understand the replacement RAM needs to be pretty much the same as the current one.

Would it be possible to stick the RAM in another computer and run Memtest to find out what kind it is? Because I forgot what kind it was :S

Or is my knowledge wrong and I have some freedom as to what type of RAM to buy?

Well you would have to know what type of RAM your motherboard supports.
Just check in the manual

Memtest86 tests to see if your RAM is functional. If you just want to find out what type of RAM you have, check in your computer's BIOS. There are programs to tell you this as well, but I don't know of any free ones off-hand.

Basically if it looks the same on the insert side as the previous one then stick it in and if your computer recognises it on the bios screen then its good. But yes, the Motherboard manuel is your friend.

If it's a newer computer you can find it on http://www.newegg.com or http://www.tomshardware.com . Just in case you can't find your manual ;). Although, most of the newer motherboards support DDR ram (NOT DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION EITHER!).

... The one thing I forgot to say...

That's probably the best choice unless it's outdated ;).
