View Full Version : Increase connection speed! (with Firefox)

You need Firefox to do this. Another reason to switch! xD
In addition, this will not work with dial-up connections. Sorry guys.

Directions:

Open Firefox.
In the address bar, type in about:config and press enter.
Scroll down to the option network.http.max-connections, and do the following:

If you are using DSL or equivalent connection, change the settings as follows. Those of you with faster connections may increase the values a bit for even faster speeds.

network.http.max-connections: 48
network.http.max-connections-per-server: 24
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy: 12
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server: 6
network.http.pipelining: true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests: 16
network.http.proxy.pipelining: true

Don't let network.http.pipelining.maxrequests get too high or else you may hammer some servers, not a good thing to do.

The current settings I use are (Comcast 3Mbit connection; I'm getting about 2.8 Mbit speeds):

network.http.max-connections: 96
network.http.max-connections-per-server: 48
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy: 24
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server: 12
network.http.pipelining: true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests: 16
network.http.proxy.pipelining: true

This is basically like reseting the IE Max connections through regedit isnt it?

Totally didn't connect that FF would use a dif setup, lol.

Yeah, it kinda is.

However, I don't think IE has HTTP pipelining.

um... is there any way to make this work for dialup?

Cool tweak, I've been using Firefox for a few months now and didn't know about those options. Thanks!

CNET: 4503.3 kbps

So we simply edit the settings to the ones you put in and it should increase our connection speed if we are using firefox and on DSL?

wow it worked it usually only goes about 112 kbps but now its 153 kbps txs and then got 402.6 kbps

Is it dangerous to make these settings high?

Edit the settings and then restart Firefox.

The worst it can do is hammer the servers you visit. Just don't let the pipelining.maxrequests get too high; everything else should be OK. However, there's a maximum speed you can attain; any more connections past that would probably result in slower speeds.

Too bad I sometimes still use my modem...
If it wasn't for that, I'd make those changes. That is guaranteed.

I don't think mine worked, it seems to have stayed the same on that test from before to after, althought I might have gained like 6 kbs. Any thoughts on why?

Interesting side note, I pressed back on the server after the test was completed and it said Infinity kbsp - You. Heh, I wish.

Ack! I tried increasing the settings to Fenguin's, and then it ran much, much slower, so I reset the setting to normal and it's even slower! Aaah!
