Well, I've finnally given up all hope of counter strike magically explaining itself to me. I want the PC version, but, even the highly reliable gamespot can't help me on this one. When searching for counter strike (or counterstrike) on gamespot, I get a list of results - none of which are just plain old "counter strike"
Counter Strike: Source
Half Life: Counter Strike
Command & Conquer Red Alert: Counterstrike (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/commandconquerredac/index.html?q=counter+strike)
Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/counterstrikeconditionzero/index.html?q=counter+strike)
Half-Life (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/halflife/index.html?q=counter+strike)
Half-Life 2
Help! I just want the regular, ever popular, counterstrike. Which one is it? Is it not there? If counter strike is really so popular I would expect gamespot to have it (they have everything else)

Half Life: Counter Strike
Plain old, Half-Life 1, vanilla Counter-Strike. Most have switched over to the new, improved, Half-Life 2-driven "Counter-Strike:Source".

Yeah, thats why when I played it, I hated it. I just gave up on it. Now I play Halo 2.
Counter Strike is fun for awhile. And yes, you will get pwned and pwned.. But have fun. ;)
BTW: Shouldn't this go in the FPS forum?

Half Life: Counter Strike
Plain old, Half-Life 1, vanilla Counter-Strike. Most have switched over to the new, improved, Half-Life 2-driven "Counter-Strike:Source".thats the ever popular counter strike that everyone talks about? (oh hey do you play coutner strike? etc)
and I'm not having trouble finding it in stores, just identifying exactly which one of those it is.
Counter Strike is fun for awhile. And yes, you will get pwned and pwned.. But have fun. ;)
BTW: Shouldn't this go in the FPS forum?shhh!!! you'll attract a mod!! besides, no one ever looks at that forum.
so (in continuation of the first post above the previous one) Half Life is counter strike, and counterstrike is an expansion for half life. Thus we get Half Life: Counterstrike just like Starcraft: Broodwar? So basically there is no coutnerstrike, its just half life (with expansion pack) and everyone calls it counter strike?
wait then whats coutner strike condition zero? is that an expansion for the expansion?
then whats coutner strike source?!?!?!?
Dude, are you stupid? You've already been told which one you want. Counter-Strike: Condition Zero is a new version of the game, that actually has single player. Counter-Strike: Source is what you said it was, it is a new improved version of the original.. Half-Life: Counter-Strike. My god, it's not that damn hard!

Here's the breakdown of it.
Half-Life: Original game.
Counter-Strike: Mod of Half-Life, now avaliable in stores. You can download Counter-Strike for free if you own Half-Life, or buy Counter-Strike from the store as a stand-alone title.
Counter-Strike - Condition Zero: You can think of this as an expansion pack to CS, adding single-player missions and some new maps and weapons.
Half-Life 2: Second Half-Life.
Counter-Strike - Source: Basically Counter-Strike 2, with improved graphics etc.
I'm thinking you want the original Counter-Strike.

thanks zds, a few more questions:
are these all stand alone games? Or are some dependant on others (example: brood war requires starcraft to play)
So the order is:
Half Life (can upgrade to cs for free via internet)
Half Life: Counter strike (stand alone game)
Counter strike: Condition Zero (stand alone or expansion pack??)
Counter Strike Source (stand alone? (so its like starcraft - the remake?))
-------------------------
Half Life 2
and basically I would buy the one lowest on the list that isn't half life two...right?
hey wait a minute, I dont see a demo anywhere...isn't there a demo? weren't you guys having a cs game night with the demo?
ok I see a demo for half life....can I install the mod for it even though its not full version???
Half-Life: CounterStrike - two versions, the free version (download the mod from the internet, assuming you have Half-Life) and the retail version (stand-alone). There's no real difference between the two.
CounterStrike: Condition Zero - Stand-alone, with single player missions and bots. Not really an expansion pack.
CounterStrike: Source - Half-Life 2's "multiplayer". A remake of CounterStrike. Comes together when you buy Half-Life 2. And no, you can't buy CS:Source alone.
No, you can't use the Half-Life demo and install Counter-Strike.

ah, I see. So buy counterstrike zero, get counterstrike and some one player mode stuffs.
Question: Is coutner strike source just as good or beter as the original? (not graphics, gameplay/weapons/maps/modes/stuffs)

when you buy Condition Zero.. you only get Condition zero
and heres a pic with the diference between CS and CS:Source
Counter Strike | Counter Strike: Source

I find CS Souce better than the originall ... BUT.. they have yet to update it with more player models... right now there is only one model for each side.

so condition zero is ONLY one player mode stuffs. ok
to me cs and cs source look almost the same. Just wondering, can you connect a PC game controller to your comptuer and use that to play? (for someone who hates using the mouse and keyboard) (and yes I have one, it has two joysticks and a whole bunch of buttons. Much like an x-box or ps2 controller)

ok they are all stand alone i think i knw CS is and i love to still playut2k4 and shoors like COD and socom2 bu i think the only non stand alone is Half Like:CS i dont evn think thats a game??
I'm gonna skip all the previous crap here and say:
1. Download Steam from www.steampowered.com (http://www.steampowered.com/)
2. Buy regular Counter-Strike.
Condition Zero is something different, but it is still fun. CS:Source requires a beefy computer to run well. Mine, for example, doesn't even render the goddamn textures.
