I thought this thread might help a few people on the forum so here it goes!

1. Make a practice account. If your switching from one type of game to another(Ex: 1v1 to 2v2) this will keep you from messing up your record and you dont have to worry about how many games you lose. Play as many games as possible till you feel you are doing fine, than go back to your normall account.

2.Download some replays. This will help you with build orders and strategies vs a certain race. This also will give you some pointers on how to attack and when to attack.

3. Ask for help! Post some of your OWN replays on the Warboards community! People here will help you see what you can improve on and what you did well. This is one of the best methods for getting better.

Well i hope this helped alot of you guys

~Louay For number 3, I would have to say post your OWN replay first, then ask for help. Don't ask strategy questions without a replay attached, if you want proper answers that is.

I would add more on Micromanagement. Here are my tips for getting better.

Have a game plan prior to the beginning of a round and stick to it as much as you can.
Develop an efficient build order for the beginning of the round, practice it until you have it committed to memory, and don't deviate unless you know it is necessary. As much as some want to deny it, build orders are the key to surviving early on.
Make your harassment count! Practice taking your early Footmen, Ghouls, Archers/Hunts, or Grunts and Hero and make it a goal that you will kill at least one enemy unit or structure without losing any units of your own.
Commit to memory the hotkeys for the race you're working with. "T" for Wolves if you're Orc, "W" for Water Elementals if you're Human, etc... also building and spell hotkeys as well as unit production keys. Believe it or not, this will noticeably speed up your gameplay.
Enhance your unit control by using control groups, the ctrl key, tab, and various other hotkeys to maximize the efficiency of your time in battle. The less time you spend managing your attack while being the most efficient is the advantage you need against your opponent.
Practice the "hit-and-run" tactics that top players use. The better you get at keeping your units alive while killing your opponent's, the better you'll be as a player.
When reviewing a replay, look for tactics in scouting and in battle in addition to build orders and unit combinations. You'll find that the best players are the ones micromanaging their units the best in spite of the number of units controlled by each player.
Learn the unit combinations and counters for your race as well as every other race. The more you know about your opponent's race, the more advantage you can create for yourself. For reference, check out the Mojo Storm Stout Strategy Guide (http://www.battle.net/war3).
Don't stop moving your mouse, ever. This is a good practice to maintain, as it assures that you're always doing something proactive in game. If you get tired or don't know what to do next, here are your options: attack, defend, scout, creep, create more units, create more structures, expand, or just quit.
Make every action count. Whereas keeping your productivity as active as possible, don't do anything that won't create or enhance your advantage over your opponent. So that it is perfectly clear, rules 9 & 10 are meant to almost contradict each other, but at the same time, it's exactly what you should be doing every game.
So, those are my 10 suggestions for getting better at WC3. Good luck all.

Here's some tips if you play as Random race (like me)

-Sometimes if you're new to WC3, and you don't know what race is best to use for you yet, it's best to use Random race on your practice account. That's what I did (and still do), I use Random as I think I am equal with all races, but I used Random at the beginning to find which race I'm best with.
-Random gives you an advantage over your opponent, even if he/she's Random too. Random makes your opponent have to scout in order for them to find out not only what you're getting, but what race you are, so they know what to get to counter your race. So that gives you an advantage.
I'll edit this post later cuz I g2g right now.

Newbies will be pleasantly surprised at the power hotkeys hold. For example, don't use the Icons to build structures. Memorize the hotkeys, and use them instead.

I can understand that, since it is a 4v4, and his actions generally account for only 1/4 of the team's total actions.

Here are a few tips on how to get better at Warcraft 3; everybody has generally covered most of the non-race-dependent information, but there are a few things I would like to add.

1. Scouting- Even though I am a hippocrit and don't scout enough, you should scout all the time. Make sure you know what they are doing. This can help with things such as hit-and-runs, creep jacking (my favorite), and saving a town portal (if you know your opponent is coming, then you don't have to use that expensive town portal if you can get back to your base.) It also helps because you know what unit choices your opponent is making, so you can pick the appropriate force to counter it. Oh yeah, don't forget expansion hunting as well.

2. Unit Choice- Use units that compliment each other, and use heroes that compliment the units as well. A more basic example of this would be taking the Priestess of the Moon when using archers, since her aura adds a nice fat bonus to their damage. A slightly more advanced example would be the strategy I like to use. It is much easier to get pure grunts instead of mixed grunts and headhunters, so I usually take the Shadow Hunter and Serpent Wards to compensate for my lack of ranged units. For a second hero, I like to take the Beastmaster (when possible) so that I can add Quillbeasts to the Serpent Wards for additional ranged firepower. Generally, try to use varied units that compensate for each others' weaknesses, and try to keep a balanced force of melee, ranged, etc.

3. Expanding- Expansions are highly important, and most of the time, you will want to build one when the opportunity arises. Good times to start constructing an expansion are when you are putting pressure on your opponent's base, when you are fighting lots of battles with them, and when you are killing their expansion. As for the usefulness of expansions, they greatly increase your resource input, which helps to overwhelm your opponent as well as keeping up with them.

Also, something newbies overlook.

Dryads and other magic-immune units are immune to magical attacks! This means that a small army of Dryads will be able to kill a large army of Chimeras! This is because the Magic-type attack is useless against magical immunity.
