The next version of Netscape will be based on Firefox. It looks like it'll come with a custom skin (http://www.winter-wish.com/images/netscape.jpg), and it's supposed to have some new features. There will be limited testing of the first prototype--beta, I'd guess--of it starting on the 30th. I signed up, so if I do make it, I'll toss in my two cents on it.

Here's the actual announcement:

Dear users,

Thank you for registering to participate in the Netscape Browser Prototype Review.* We are excited that, on November 30th, we will unveil many new features that will empower your internet experience.

Netscape continues to make the online experience better than ever by developing new browser functionality and security features.* And, while other browsers have seen little improvement over recent years – except frequent patches for security leaks – we have consistently added new features to save you time and to make the most out your time online.* As a part of our next evolutionary step, we have developed this new Browser Prototype, which could change the way the world masters the web.

Please return on Tuesday, Nov. 30th, to try our new prototype. Feel free to discuss it on the forums provided, and do not hesitate to give us feedback or report a bug using the online web forms.

Sincerely,
The Netscape Browser Team

I doubt many people are going to download it. It will probably just be a skin and a few features added (like Netscape mail or something like that).

Also, AOL has announced a new browser based off of IE, despite the fact they own Netscape.

Probably not, but I used Netscape for a long time, and would've stayed with it had I not learned about Firefox, so it's more of a walk down memory lane. I guess.

The thread I found all this stuff in at another forum seemed to be full of some members eager to give it a shot. *Shrugs* We'll see.

At least one of the Mozilla guys isn't happy (http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/pinkerton/archives/006941.html). Well, not unhappy, per se, just incredulous of how well it will do. With good reason, it sounds like.

It is kinda funny though, Mozilla makes all the code, then "netscape" takes it and adds something to it or some such, and then re-release it as Netscape. Of course they aren't dead... they are just leaching.

Its really sad that AOL still isn't going to use Netscape and/or Mozilla. I mean come on. Its like a Microsoft Web Server running Linux... wait nvm.

I'll give it a shot. But I seriously doubt that it will be better than FF from what you presented.
