The exclusive brother-/sisterhood of oldschoolers already exists - just not formally or openly. We are quite elusive, see. :P

Well..this sorta seems reminiscent of another system (of gauging popularity/helpfulness) we had in place that unfortunately spawned too many unwanted side-effects.

Anyhow,
If we had such a system of a Hall-of-fame, how would you judge which member gets to be in it?.
There are a lot of excellent members out there I admit but still everyone has their personal choice. We could include a number of people but someone is bound to get left out/forgotten albeit not on purpose.
How would you decide the criteria for such a judgement ?
And if you say that if the person was forgotten then he wasn't known well enough to be included, then I would say that is true but only for the group that does the judging and not for that guy's circle of friends.

I've actually been thinking about something like this for a while myself.
I think Geno had also suggested a long time back awards like best poster, Most helpful member and more that many of you old-schoolers (as TheBB puts it) would be familiar with

If implemented, it would be great and a lot of laughs, but the group who decides the judging criteria would really have to walk a tight-rope to get it right and even then you can be damn sure that not everyone would be satisfied.

This is what the WarBoards Awards are for. We'll have the first annual one in Febuary, hopefully, around the time when WB opened. ;)

One time I'd be a celebrity, but now I'm more of a faceless drone; appointed to chastise you in the name of oblivion.

This is a bad idea that will just inflate the members' egos. It's almost as bad as people who brag about their post count.

Hmm, I like the idea, but like ZeroDarkStar said, that's what the WarBoards.org Awards are for. How about we set a date for the WarBoards.org awards, February 8th?

Or their Karma. Nice idea but there are bound to be groups who will be unhappy, no matter what. Just like politics.

meh, it sounds like karma by another name

it seems pointless to me, well known people are gonna be well known anyway, they shouldnt need an award to become known

Let's hurry up and get these Warboards Awards going. I already have my speech prepared. :D

I'm against the idea of this Hall of Fame.

First off the bat, it's exlusive and undermines the meaning of unity we endeaver for. Having elitist groups is a lovely ego-boost for those included (as mentioned), but tends to infuse jealousy and resentment in the rest of the community.

Also - sad but true - members come and go. A famous member now might not even be around in a few months time.

Lastly - and this was already mentioned - who would be given the position to judge this? I can just imagine the floods of claims from people who believe the system is unfair and biased. I'm aware of several answers to this question, but I can also think of a couple of excellent points against each of them.

I think we should just leave it to the Awards to glorify posters.

I was thinking it might be a good idea to make a kind of "hall of fame" type thing here at the warboards, everyone who is well known with some sort of cliche (ex: Fenguin, giadragoness, Demon_child, theXenon, carnage, etc.) would be in some type of virtual hall or something. I was also thinking to myself that this might force people into wanting to be known by nothing more than a silly catchphrase, or some signiture, or whatever. What do you guys think?.
/me noticed bluemicrobyte is not on the list

/me votes no!

Thats an interesting idea, but a lot of people would get really angry if they were not on the list. Also, any newbie who comes here will want to be on the list, and rambel on and on until hes on the list, then he'll leave warboards.

I don't really see the point. We had karma, and everyone saw how THAT went; this sounds like it will have some of the same problems.

The hall of fame thing might be cool, for commitment, helpfulness, community service or whatever but a hall of fame based on popularity?

Obviously that is bound to stir some people around. If you want to give somebody a little recognition then drop them a PM, Start a thread telling them how super they are but a hall of fame would kinda kill the equality of warboards.

I think it's a great idea!

But then again--About unity and such--Ya got a point there......I'm looking forward to WB Awards :)

Eh. Some people ramble now too... and they will complain continually until they get on the "Hall of Fame."

This is a bad idea that will just inflate the members' egos. It's almost as bad as people who brag about their post count.
Completely agree. Let's think: this is a forum, where people come to talk about games, technology, and other generic topics. What makes people who post most of make outrageous posts "famous"? Bad, bad idea.

Also, we have moderators/administrators. They are pretty much like the Hall of Fame - except that they ACTUALLY DO WORK. Which is good for the forum. A Hall of Fame is a waste of time and energy.

Nah, I don't think we should have one really. Then some people would feel like they are better then others just because they are on the list. Everybody here has their different opinions about who should be on such a list. I think awards are good enough.
