There was a discussion something like this a few weeks ago.
http://www.warboards.org/showthread.php?t=6175
People discuss their hotkey setups. Most have a main group of fighters in 1 group w/o a hero, a second group for ranged fighters and sometimes a third group for specialties. The hero is almost never is included. I include it because I like tabbing through the units and using the alt key for subgroups.
if creeping and a unit gets low pull it out to have the creeps reset their targets.
utilize [ and ] for seeing which enemies and units of yours are low on health.
use focus fire with ranged, but not so much with melee, as you'll end up with units doing the 'runaround'
Alright nice :) Thanks for the help ganglyone

Shift the dying units with healthy ones.
Learn to manage your hero properly. Cast spells at oppurtune times. Ex: 10 archers are sitting there just asking for a Blizzard/Flamestrike/Rain of Fire.
If you're using ranged units, focus fire on the enemy heroes.
Do not allow the enemy to focus fire on your units.
Get potions. When your opponent thinks that your hero is about to die, if you use a healing potion, the enemy's calculations are thrown off.
Do things 2 seconds before you want to do them. For example, if you think your hero will die soon, run immediately.
There's my two cents.
nice thanks mindslaver
I have a question though. Should i keep each type of unit in a different group? I.E- Melee, magic, ranged and so on.

Yes, you should separate the groups. You can have melee and ranged in the same group, but definetely put casters in their own groups. You really don't want to waste any time in casting spells. Unless they are autocast spells (i.e. Bloodlust or Inner Fire).
Attackers should be focused on certain units. Do not randomly attack, because that is a guaranteed waste of damage.

I just thought I might contribute to this thread by posting a replay that clearly displays that micromanagement beats massing, because my one barracks conquers his two barrackes.
Yes, you should use meele and range in two different groups. I usually hotkey like this for units:
Group 1: Meele +any meele heroes (if u get a caster for your 1st hero, put him here until you get a meele hero), also any tier 1 army smaller than 12 guys.
Group 2: Range +ranged/casting heros OR Air units and range/casting heros
Group 3: Casting AND whatever unit type you left out in group 2 (no heroes)
Group 4: Seige (no heros)
Anything else: Your choice (most likely buildings)
That's just an example, change it so it fits your style of play. Or make your own hotkey list so you could be free of any restrictions of my list.
Cheapo's replay really proves that micro is over macro in that replay. Also, he does remind me of you:D.

Cheapo's replay really proves that micro is over macro in that replay. Also, he does remind me of you:D.Half of the reason that was amusing was because the other guy didn't understand the joke :P .

heres something some new players leave out: spell or ability range. All spells and special abilities have a range that the user must be in to be able to succesfully cast so if ure priest is in the middle of a bunch of footies dont try to dispel till u get out or he'll be runnin around till he gets in range and that disrupts micro. Also when ur target dies or runs put ure caster or whatever on another task or itll chase it or stand around or even start attacking and thats bad when its a caster theyre meant to cast,
