View Full Version : Laserjet Errors

A few months back, I was fortunate to acquire a working HP Laserjet 4 for the meager sum of $2. Some people don't know the value of things in garage sales apparently, but that is another story. Up until a few days ago, it has worked magnificently.
Currently, I am getting a blinking 50 Service error. Normally, turning off and unplugging the printer for 30 minutes should fix this, however it has not this time and the error has persisted for several days now. I removed the fuser and checked for damage, however could not find any obvious scratches or damage that would impair the operation of the printer
If I have the rear of the printer open when I start it up, I recieve a 13 Paper Jam error, however I have already removed the small scraps of paper I found in the rollers and fuser. Upon closing the back, the display claims to be warming up, however it soon reverts to the blinking 50 Service error.
It appears that my only real options are to take it to a service location or buy a new printer. Since repairing the laserjet could cost more than buying a new all-in-one, the latter option is looking better every day, however I would much rather salvage my laserjet if it can be done in an economical fashion. Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks for the help WL, but I've already been there. Does anyone have any advice not covered on the HP website? (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?locale=en_US&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=25487&prodTypeId=18972&objectID=bpl05620) (That link is to the page for 50.x errors on my model.)

..and some don't (you)
Sorry I can't help you. I'm pretty good at troubleshooting computers but I have never any any success whatsoever with things like printers and copiers.

That post is totally irrelevant, hammock.
Anyway, what's your exact model number, Modred?

Anyways yeah WL, that's good, a burnt out quartz lamp shouldn't be too hard to fix. Get the part off ebay or a supplier. Looks like that site (fixyourownprinter.com) will supply the parts you need, for around 30-40 quid. Your last resort should be HP because most companies will charge you a bundle for replacement parts.
Although I guess this quartz lamp is used for heating...why would a printer need to heat something up? I guess it heats the toner or whatever. Kind of interesting.

Thats becuase big companies have to dynamic every fucking page. As if a list of 5 year old parts is going to change. Plus on no where does the page say 'searching for' lol.

Thats what you prolly want then. for your HP Laserjet 4 or whatever.

While I'm sure that was a joke, I thought I just inform you that a refurbished Laserjet 4 costs a minimum of $250. And that's for something this old.
Thank you all for your help, although the link you gave me for the repair kit is for a 4+ or 5, while I have a plain old LJ 4. But I found the correct page, so all is good. If I can scrounge up an extra $40, I'll get on of those kits (much better than the $80 ones I found on other sites). Once again, thanks, and I'll be back if something doesn't go quite right.
