You know how the spartans are referred to as the "Spartan II Project" or something like that... well, where are the Spartan I's? Was it a scrapped project? Is it because of the people of Sparta, Greece?

The Spartans are named after the Spartans of Ancient Greece. So therefore they're #2

I just started reading the 2nd book today (the flood) in the first chapter (i believe, possibly the prologue) it tells about the Spartan project, which was the first set of augmented people, they lived out there lives in total secracy. So, wooot, i found out the answer to my own question!

There was no "SPARTAN Is". I don't know what you read, but it wasn't that. SPARTAN IIs were named after the legendary warriors of Sparta, Greece. One of their more famous battles was the battle of Thermyoplade (excuse the misspelling, I'm not really in the mood to look it up). In that battle, a little under 300 warriors held off thousands of Persians.

The Spartans were also the driving force behind the Seige of Troy. Achilles was Spartan.

SPARTAN IIs, however, are completely different.

SPARTAN IIs, however, are completely different. Strait from the book:
In order to deal with increasing civil turmoil the Colonial Military Administration had secretly launched Project ORION back in 2491. The purpose of the program was to develop super-soldiers, code-named "Spartans," who would recieve special training and augmentation.

The initial effort was successful, and in 2517 a new group of Spartans, the II-series, had been selected as the next generation of supersoldier... You were saying ZDS?

A side note: did you know that the military has a group called the Spartan Twos? I read that today in the newsweek, and I was like... WOAH. I believe they are a group within the marines.

simplisticly saying.... the original spartans that the spartan IIs are named are after would be given I. therefore they would be named II.... confusing i kno >.<

ther was a spartan one project, the spartans were recalled to reach for furthur cybernetic enhancements (into spartan 2's) for a special mission and reach got attacked - leading to HALO

one question for those with the limited edition halo 2,

in the booklet "conversations from the universe", the conversation between cortana and another AI says that the spartan 1's had a former human background, whereas the spartan 2's are effectively wargear - implying that the two projects were radically different.....so, is the HALO 1 manual correct or is "Conversations"?

I'd assume any new material overrides old stuff as is custom in most series.

Spartan ones were the cyborgs in MARATHON. Note that the MAster Chief has a mark 5 suit in Halo1 and a mark 6 suit in halo 2, while the MARATHON cyborgs are designated mark 4.

Bungie in-joke i guess.

Bob was refering to teh fact that during teh actual battle of Marathon in ancient greece, sparta was supposed to reinforce athens, but didn;t citing a religious festival that kept them.

I on the other hand refered to the Marathon game.

Yes the Covenants (Aliens) covenant (mission) is to rid the universe of the humans. It is not explained why they just said they have to. Hope the lil () explain it a lil better

because the humans are the forerunners and the prophets have a nice cushy number as things stand.

Remember in halo 1? when the monitor was talking about its creators saying "I am thankful that at least some of them survived to breed"?

No the monitor was talking about the flood. Since it had been so long since any food had come to the ring. He was afraid they might have died

No the monitor was talking about the flood. Since it had been so long since any food had come to the ring. He was afraid they might have died Why would the Moniter be afraid of the Flood's extinction, if he wants Master Chief to, technically, destroy them?

Sikawtic

first off... covenant means promise... and 2nd off, they are destroying the human populace because their religion spoke of the "evil" creatures in which they must vanguish from the galaxy.
Or something like that.

He also questions why you are using such primative weapons and armour. He assumes that you know you are the forerunner. In the libary he blirts out alot to suggest that you are the forerunner.

hmmmmm I might have to play it over again but didn't they say in Halo 2 that the forerunners were killed when they activated the halo system?

They can't be sparten ones in marathon (the game)! The sparted ones lived in greece! But in fall of rich they talked about an earlier sparten project.
