Apparently the only way to play team slayer is through a custom game, which for some unexplainable reason is not searchable. The only way to play it is to either create the custom game and invite friends or join a friend's custom game that is already created.
Post your gamertag here and add the others' to your friend's list so we can get some 16 player team deathmatch action up in here! I'm going to log on around 9 pm central tonight so feel free to invite me if you see me on and are already in a game.

Team Slayer is joinable through the Opimatch feature using the "Team Skirmish", "Big Team Battle", "Minor Clan Battle" and "Major Clan Battle" options.
I'm currently running a GamerTag list which is viewable, stickied, at the top of this very forum.

I'd play Xbox live, but I'm hell no paying for a game that takes my time away from doing things productive. Sorry guys :(

Yeah, but you have to have a clan to play the clan games, and team skirmish and big team battle are not team slayer, they are objective base team games, like CTF, bomb run, etc...

Team Slayer comes up quite alot, in my experience. Perhaps you're just unlucky. However, in a FAQ at Bungie.net, Bungie said, and I quote:
Seventeen furious dudes from Texas ask: Why in the name of sweet Holy Carl can't I just choose a Team Slayer game from OptiMatch?
We are also still evaluating our existing playlists and gametypes within each playlist based on activity so far and all the feedback we've been receiving. We will have some initial adjustments soon, which are substantial and should make a lot of you happy (like the Team Slayer players). In the meantime, you should keep playing anyway, since part of the point is to open up new game modes to players, and more importantly, use the Party system to create parties and play any gametypes you like. That's what it's for! And, this isn't immediately obvious, but you can send a party invite to someone straight from the post game carnage report. If you want to group up with players you just played with, when the game is over, scroll through the post game carnage report, select the player and then you can send them a party invite. You DON'T have to be on someone's friends list to be in their party.

Hang in there. ;)
