View Full Version : Trigger Happy Defense!

Buahaha, no one can escape my wrath! Even on a different forum. ;)
*cough*, anyway, since I'm lazy:
Ah, my long-awaited defense map is finally completed! I've had this one on the back burner for a full year, and only as a diversion from Oregon Trail have I finally gotten to finish it (a full 2 weeks of slave labor work, I might add!) I feel especially happy about this one, though I'll let you decide for yourself. :)
Anyway, here's what's in it: 6 weapons, 3 traps, 31 levels, 60 monsters, 8 bosses, 4 guardians (and a rather nasty cameo final boss, too ;)), intro and ending cinematics, sound FX galore (weapons, weapon hits, monster kills, building hits, purchases, transmissions, etc.)... the works. The weapons are based on my shooter system I posted earlier, where you fire by casting dark swarm. Weapons include the vanilla rifle, shotgun, minigun (hella fun to use), flame thrower, rocket launcher, and the grandaddy of them all: the BFG 9000 (yeah, blatant ripoff... so sue me).
EDIT- And just a tip: make use of the traps! They'll be you're best friend if you do!
The only issues at the time of this release (that I'm currently aware of) are the large file size due to the wav files (337k, but worth every byte of it, IMO), potential lag from the intensive trigger (pound per pound this is my MOST trigger-intensive map to date, even over my upcoming Oregon Trail), and an inherent limitation with starcraft that prevents dark swarms from being cast too close to other players (I disabled that because player's shots might conflict otherwise).
If it becomes popular, or else if I get enough requests, I'll release a version with music in it, though it won't be very bnet friendly, obvious. The tracks I selected really add to the experience, especially the ending credits one. ;)
P.S. You might be wondering about the name, Trigger Happy, since that is the same as my old sidelined trigger editor of yore. Well I chose the name for two reason: the obvious one is because, well, you get to shoot stuff... a lot of stuff. :D The other reason is because this represents the first map I made using the utility functions from my old trigger editor that I've taken time recently to get working in a simple command-line app I made just a few days ago. That is how I was able to pull this off in less than 2 weeks, where otherwise it'd have taken more more than a month before using SCXE.
Does this mean I'm going to restart work on Trigger Happy? Maybe. As of now I still have about 3 other maps I need to finish to complete my map pack (scheduled for the middle of March, hopefully), plus my campaign, so I'll decide on it after I get those done first.
Just thought you might be interested.EDIT- You'll need to cut n' paste the links (since this forum doesn't seem to like the '[' and ']' brackets in the links.

Haha, I wonder what this map is like...
(Some useless information: I remember approving this on the admin panel!)

I'm sure you'll like it, but I'll let you play it and decide for yourself. ;)
Normally I would avoid making any kind of defense, bound, or madness maps like a defiler's plague (my new acronym for the trio of suck: DBM), but I really just wanted to showcase my new shooter system, so I figured this would be a good way to start with! From the games of it on bnet I've played so far, I think this map stands a decent chance of being my first real hit on bnet! Kinda sad that it has to be in the form of a D map, though. :tu:

Is it a competitive defense or a team based defense? As in is it you try to get the best score or if 1 person leaks or whatever, you all die?

Wow, how do you complete maps so fast? Are you in high school? Man I wish I was still in high school... so much more time. You guys should make the most of it.

I'm in high school, I've only managed to complete a couple UMS maps. I mean, each takes me over half a year. :(

I know how you feel, BST... I've barely mapped at all since college started. It's like someone stoppered my map creativity in a bottle. The good part is that I have a slew of ideas to try out for when I get back.

How is it that you are younger than me and already out of school Rhino?
He's a genious. Is there a problem with that? I'm somewhat of one. I could have graduated a year early, but decided to stay in, because I'm 2nd in class rank, and am getting scholorships for it. Plus, I'm the youngest in my class by about a year... o.O I hate being smart though, everyone tries to cheat off of me...

P.S. Good map from what I hear... Can you play 1 player at all, or does it have to be full house...? If it's a full house thing, I really get annoyed with them. The map may be the best ever, but if you don't get fh, you screwed. Here's a challenge... Make a defense map that you can have 1 player or 6 players, and it's still as hard as it would be. A good example that you can't find often anymore: Critter Defense! ;)

All you do is the the create triggers to the force and whamo. It'll create the number of units times the number of active players.
Tuxedo-Templar
03-02-2004, 10:35 AM
It DOES do that! More players == more units + guardian HP! And yes, you can play solo without too much penalty (I even managed to beat it on medium mode solo during testing ;)).

er... there's a thread in BlizzWarWorlds called 'BlizzWarWorlds chit chat.' Read that somewhere.

er... it was in response to this thing:
How is it that you are younger than me and already out of school Rhino?
and the go Geno thing was to do with this thing:
He's a genious. Is there a problem with that? I'm somewhat of one. I could have graduated a year early, but decided to stay in, because I'm 2nd in class rank, and am getting scholorships for it. So really, how old are you? And where are you in college? One of my friends recently asked 'Who is this Rhino dude? (In responce to the 'where did you get the pirate ship picture ;))' and I was like 'Well, he's this really cool dude on the forums I visit, and he's really smart and in college, and somehow younger than me. They were saying BS about it, so I'm wondering if there is any kind of link you can throw me? o.O
~Larry "Geno" Meyers
P.S. Omega, the turrets... Cool things about them is that I can use them a LONG time, but the bad thing is, I can put five at the very start, and kill about anything for a good 8 or 9 rounds before having to use ammo, and by then, I have about max... Any fix on that? or is that supposed to happen? o.O

Rhino is 16 right now. I know this because his birthday is 364 days after mine. ;)

Here's the truth. I like hiding this secret, but it is a bit of a burden to hold it in a lot of the time. So...
I'm five years ahead of my age in school. Go onto google and type my real name if you're looking for references.
I'm not making it up...

Daaaaaamn... 5 years ahead of where you need to be... Smart ass :p...
Anyways, back on topic: It says 5 shots of the turret. Well, I get about infinite... What's up with that? o.O

Alrighty, here's v1.3 finally! All the promised changes/fixes and more! I think you'll greatly appreciate some of the improvements over the prior version, but I'll let you be the judge of that. ;)
Have fun!
*Downloads with happiness, but realizes he has school, then about 2 hours to play, then to TECH NIGHT for the musical... No sleep for you! x.x*
~Larry "Geno" Meyers
P.S. Yay! Thanks... Didja fix the turret bug though? The 25 shots (Last post was a bit off o.O) really go forever.... Hmmm... o.O Also, is there an actual ending now? ;)

Hehe. Me and geno beat it with absolutely no problems. Geno barely had to do anything. Try making it a bit harder mabye?
We only played on the easiest difficulty though, remember that. We should try medium when we have a chance. Not now, though, as I have musical practice in a few minutes, and I'm still searching for those sound effects. But, please fix those turret problems, as that's what won us the game... x.x

I didn't already? Or are you saying you won that way in v1.1? Well yeah I fixed that, plus the flame thrower and many other bugs as well. I'm thinking of getting v1.4 up soon too since there are a few more still I need to address (It's still possible to fux the ending sequence, I discovered), plus I'm thinking the whole shot blocking feature needs to be taken out altogether, since it's better to at least have a shot if an enemy is about to get by vs. no shot at all, despite possible shot confusion.
Valjean
03-08-2004, 7:04 PM
Yeah, the shot thing just gets in the way. =/
Tuxedo-Templar
03-08-2004, 9:38 PM
Well because there is no way in the editor to tell whose dark swarms belong to whom, I have no choice but to block them, or else risk confusion. I guess confusion is better than nothing, though.

Must have been a few months since you released this I guess, I just downloaded the map from some place and rememberd seeing it on this forum.
It is a great map, though its a shame it is a D map. I wonder why I havent seen it on battle net at all?
Tuxedo-Templar

I don't know either. It sure as hell beats the living smack out of 99% of the other D maps out there, so I'm about clueless. Maybe the interface is too frusturating for people under 100 IQ (the majority of bnet).
Well, can't say I didn't try. I think I'll finish up Oregon Trail and my tetris map, and maybe one more project from my endless queue if I can stomach it, and call it quits on starcraft. I'm getting too little appreciation to be putting in so much work into this. Not refering you guys, though. ;)

That reminds me, can I have a copy of Trigger Happy? I think it might help me make my own map, which happens to have a couple, very repetitive triggers. :annoy

I assume you are refering to my maps as the 1%!
Anyways, can I have an unprotected version of the map to look at?

Any time some one gets a map thats unprotected, it usally brings the map to hell:devil:.
