View Full Version : What do YOU look for in an FPS game?

I was looking over some of these threads, and I came upon a new question. What is it that really makes an FPS good? I encourage you to think about both single and multiplayer experiences with games, and maybe provide some examples. And don't say stuff like "I like the game because it has good multiplayer" give us some details!

I like playing single player. For me, the game has to be interesting, and have some times where you're really put into the action. I like games where you need to solve little puzzles, and analyze your surroundings to find the right way to the next area. Single player games shouldn't take forever to beat, and they shouldn't be too short, either. There should be a good mix of difficulty levels to choose from to offer a greater challenge and add more replay value. Repetiveness takes away from the game. I don't want to have to walk though levels just to return to a room and have my enemies just respawn endlessly. Single player for me isn't completely about realism (it's good in some games), it's about gameplay.
I like Half-Life, Halo, and Jedi Knight because they don't take too awful long to beat (after the first time, at least), and are all around fun to play. I didn't like Unreal because the single player campaign was WAY too long, and in every level, you walked into the same traps as the level before (walk into a room, door closes behind you, enemies pour out). I actually got bored of playing the game because the levels just seemed to drag on. Jedi Academy and Halo get extremely repetitive after you play a few times, but can still be fun to return to every once in a while.

For multiplayer, I myself like regular deathmatch games. I'm not much into team games, or games that require teamwork. I like games where you have a chance at living. I don't like games where you die in just 1 or 2 hits from weapons. Sniping and all-powerful weapons really put a damper on my gaming experience. Give someone a chance to get away or fight back! Have some skills besides the ability to get headshots with a sniper rifle! I never really got into the Unreal Tournament games because all the weapons were so powerful and everyone just keeps dying all the time. I never got into counterstrike because you can dump a full clip into someone, and while you're riddling them with bullets, they find out where the shooter is coming from, turn around, and kill you in 2 shots. Vehicles are interesting, and are good in certain maps or playing modes, but I don't think a game is good just because it has vehicles.

Yes, I concur with the Single Player. Coop would be great for Halo, and therefore damn M$. Enough of that for now.

MP - how dare you not like team games? I play nothing but team games. CTF mostly. Now, my bother will only play CTF, only on one map, BG or an open-space equivalent. I love the variety of all maps, and the satisfaction of team coordination when you get their flag, and pick up the flagger in your vehicle and drive him home, or picking off guys chasing him on smaller maps. Aieee, I gotta go play that now.

I'm not against team games, it's just that I'm not interested in them much. Halo is by far the best multiplayer FPS game (out of the few I've tried). Any team games I play are usually from a map rotation on the server. I don't mind team games. I've actually started to get into team deathmatch. I'm not big on CTF, but I do enjoy the occasional CTF game. I like to be an independant player, and being part of a team strike force in a warthog isn't much fun for me. If I play CTF I usually just patrol in a Ghost or hold back to defend the flag, or just stake out positions around the map to gun down the enemy. CTF is sometimes fun, though.
