Well, they are the leaders of the Covenant, I presume. The last chapter of the book First Strike, gives some interesting insight on these guys.

Anyways, basically, as you know, The Covenant are highly religous. Hell, their namesake is a direct proof of that. Basically, the Prophets are exactly that. Prophets to the Covenant from the god. Nobody knows yet, but we (as a community) generally accept that the Covenant worship the Forerunner.

Now, worship doesn't have to mean prized. They show respect for the Forerunner, oh yes, but given that they desecrate Halo the way they did (breaking into restricted areas, destroying Forerunner defenses, deploying troops on so called "sacred ground"), it seems that the The Covenant almost loathe the Forerunner with a holy zeal.

The Prophets, I think, are merely just Covenant who've met/are related/know about the Forerunner.

The first quote is kinda wrong cuz the Flood have withstood their might and terrorized the Covie but Iguess they dont count that as an enemy. The prophets are religious figure of course and *I believe* you can fight them. Also I'm not sure if this is a spoiler to you all I dont think it is considered a spoiler but here goes... theres a new difficulty in H2 called 'master of the universe' makes library on legendary look like a walk in the park

The Prophets, I think, are merely just Covenant who've met/are related/know about the Forerunner.
I believe the Prophets evolved on a planet that had many Forerunner ruins/structures/technology
