View Full Version : Let's Talk About Those Monthly Map Making Competitions!

The first of March is just around the corner, so let's hammer out the wrinkles in our monthly map making competitions and hop to it!

Here's what we have so far:
At the beginning of each month, a map making competition is held for members of the Starchitects. We make a thread about what our project is and then we go around and help each other out so we all make the best maps possible. Although that would at first seem anti-competitive, the ultimate prize for all of us is to play great entries. There are no real prizes for winners, just the recognition of being the most badass map maker in the world (for a month). Solo and team entries are accepted.

To determine the winner, each participant must play and critique every other participant's map, and give a score out of 10. This is not any sort of criteria judging, just what score you think the map deserves. Whomever has the most points after every participant has voted, wins.

To enter, you don't need to PM anybody or anything. Just (as long as you're a Starchitect) make a thread describing your project. This has to be done before the voting period begins.

If you so wish, your entry may be stalled back for a later round.

What needs to be hammered out...
- Penalties for participants who don't vote: If someone doesn't vote at all, they'll have quite an advantage on everyone else, so how are they to be punished? I propose 3 options:
1. Disqualification: Ouch!
2. Deduct 10 points from overall score
3. Deduct their highest score from the overall score: True, if their highest score is only 5, they won't lose much, but if that's their highest score, they never had a prayer anyway.

- Starchitect only? I think it should be, as it encourages a closer sense of rivalry and community. Too many entries and we become invisible competitors. Of course, anyone may make a map, submit it to the Starchitects, get in, and then use that map as their entry.
Of course, making it Starchitect only is a very elitist thing to do. I think the competition is more effective by making it elitist, however.

- Should we have multiple awards? Besides 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, perhaps something like "Most Improved" (for the next rounds), "Most Addictive", "Most Artistic", "Best Original Writing", etc.

I like the whole idea. I say if you don't do what you're supposed to do, you're disqualified. I like the awards too. Call em runner up awards. I kinda wish I didn't annoucne Spell Check 2.0 now. :(

Will there be multiple allowed entries or just 1 map per person?

I think 1 map per person would be best.

If you could do otherwise people would flood the place with entries.

I was in favor of multiple entries. One reason among many for making it only open to Starchitects is that I know we wouldn't flood the contest with bad entries. These are sort of Oscar rules, in that if you submit a map once you can't submit it again. Therefore, even if the first round is flooded with spam entries, the second round will be all original.
