I'm making an rpg map called the uprisings but I can't decide how to do the leveling up system? this is what i've thought so far but any suggestions would be helpful.

Raynor (marine) > Ranor (vulture) > Duke (Seige Tank) Hyperion

(Those aren't the unit names on the map.)

if you wan't them just to suddebly become the next level that make some triggers like:
conditions:
current player command [lvl 1 unit name]
current player has at least [number] kills
actions:
move location [location1 name] on [lvl 1 unit name]
remove all units for current player at [loation1 name]
create 1 [lvl 2 unit name] at [location1 name]

ect to next levels...

I know that, I was asking for tips whether the upgrade thing could be made better, but thanks anyway! :)

I know that, I was asking for tips whether the upgrade thing could be made better, but thanks anyway! :)If you wanna make it batter than make a town that you can go to and buy stuff there, than when you'll get enought money you'll be able to to but vulture or siege tank or whatever the "next level".
and you can create academies and science facilities in the end if the map, than when you have enought "points" it'll pup-up there and the building will be given to you, with enought money to one of the upgrades,
example:
level 1. marine
" 2. marine with upgraded range
" 3. marine(2) + stim packs
" 4. marine with more life (jim)
" 5. you become a ghost
" 6. ghost + lockdown
" 7. ghost(6) + upgraded sight
" 8. ghost(7) + cloak
" 9. ghost(8) + energy upgrade
" 10. ghost with more life (a hero...)
" 11. ghost with refreshing life (infested duran)

and vehicles will be another extra...

The point of this thread was for ideas of which unit yo should become next, but i've thought about using some more units in the level up though. Anyway, good idea aqo! :D

The point of this thread was for ideas of which unit yo should become nextOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOhhh...

ok ok, here is an idea for rpgs where you're a human infantry:
1. firebat
2. firebat hero
3. marine
4. marine hero
5. ghost
6. kerrigan
7. alexei
8. duran
9. infested duran
10. infested kerrigan

good idea, but the roles of marine, firebat and ghost are taken. (And you're fighting aganst some monsters and i think infested kerrigan wouldn'tbe good for it) also, i'll loop round to vehicles.

Usually I find levelling systems in RPGs unsatisfactory, because of two things. First of all, if I had a zealot, and then I level up to a ghost, then I lose all the upgrades and I actually get a worse unit. Second, the ghost has a different range and it also does a different kind of damage, so even if I did have equal upgrades, it might not necessarily be better on the whole.

So, how about just having normal upgrades that you can buy?

BSTRhino's right, some units are just not made to be good, take the ghost for instance, although you can change its damage, you can't change its cooldown or its damage type (concussive), and lets say your lv 3 ghost did 100 damage, it could only do around 25 damage to a building or a large unit (tank, ultralisk)and 50 to a medium unit, and full damage to a small unit, however, if you think of this and give it way more attack, it will be unbalanced still, since its damage to small units with be huge. Another unit that sucks for rpgs are most air units. It's much, much harder to make a barrier keeping an air unit out of an area then keeping a ground one out. Try to make new units minimal and stick to one race, and make sure it you think about its damage/range/cooldown until you confirm that you're going to make it. You should have concussive units first, explosive second, and normal last(i.e. Ghost, Marine, Firebat, vulture, goliath).

There's already an RPG with Uprising in its name. I suggest using another.

leveling up is hard, but very cool. what about a selectable race, as in choosing it at the start menu, then making a progression for each race. IDEA: you can incorporate something like a party of all three, or three beacons with a chooser unit to decide which one you control, and the other two either fall passive or use custom ai scipts to make them attack while you control one of them. wait, wouldn't that be just like putting them all on your team, using xtra editor?

Just a suggestion.

Or... You can just make character classes and make lvl ups for them...
