Hi everyone. I have decided to make this thread here. This is something I have always wanted to do at BF, but couldn't really because it seems no one has an interest in the A&E board. Anyway, I don't know how familiar all of you are with the game of Civilization III and Civilization III Conquests, but they are personal favorites of mine. I figured this would be the most appropriate place for the thread, and it should also serve the purpose of me introducing myself to this board.
I am sure some of you know me from blizzforums. When I woke up this morning and read all the posts about some forum that split from BF I wasn't quite sure what to think. Anyway, I had to ask Dark_soul74 to even find the name of this place being that every other reference on BF was pretty much removed it seems. Anyway, I decided to give this place a shot and just post at both for now.
Regards,

Hi Nova, I never did get much of a chance to meet you in the Blizzforums area, I'm dunchy *with a small d*
I remember playing Civ II, now I got so sucked into the game I found myself playing the game for weeks at a time with no real end in site. I'd start with the Canadians *Hockey will be the world sport ;) * and just grow. When I met someone, I tried to become buddies like crazy, so they would not attack me, all the meantime a muse for me to tech to the Goliath and War Walker, at which point I'd release all armies and devastate everyone is a few short turns. There were a few problems with the game though.
So much management of towns, I remember having to press "Yes" for the build orders over and over and over again. The amount of time to get through 1 year became horribly drawn out later on in the end.
With that said, I actually haven't played Civ III, only II and CTP *call to power* How do they differ Nova? Is it easier to manage I hope? What about battles? As I recall sending a tank only to lose to some musketeers who were on the defensive.

God I love Civ III... And now that I've read this thread I'm probably going to spend the majority of my day conquering the world. Ok, I'll probably be the one getting conquered but it's fun either way. :P
BTW, I can't wait for them to finish Civ IV!!! :D

Glad to meet you. This reminds me of something. In SD back on BF, people would often screw with my screen name, making it NovaDistortion or Nova Distortion or other things to that effect. I have my name the way it is because I like the way it looks. It isn't because I can't spell. This is just a little rant anyway, not directed toward you. It is just something that has always cheesed me off.

I have never played Civ II so I can't give you much of a comparison. In terms of battles, everything is turn based. The units just slug it out one on one until one dies. They have an attack defence and bombard rating. Attack means that if they move into the part of the map that an enemy is in, they get that value for their assault. If they are defending, they use that value. Some things can bombard instead of attacking. That is just a ranged attack which hits something one or two squares away.
There are standard units and civ specific units. Musketeers are an example of civ specific units. The specific ones have a slight advantage over others. For example, a normal musket man has a rating of 2 attack and 4 defence. A musketeer has 2 attack and 5 defence in Conquests. In normal Civ III it has 3 and 4.

I know, great game isn't it? What is the highest difficulty you have managed to win at? For me it is Regent. I have a nasty habit of abusing the save/load thing when something bad happens though. Usually when my workers don't look where they are going and get killed by barbarians and such.

Truth be told... I've never completed a game. I just restart and restart and restart hahaha... "Damn it these people wont die!" *quits* :P

Hmm, that is odd. The game is like a cakewalk if you are playing on chieftain difficulty. Anyway, if you want help, I would be happy to share what I know about the game. What is your favorite Civ/government/tactic?
Personally, I am a big fan of Persia because it has good power in the earliest part of the game and can get some serious land power via immortals immediately after researching Iron Working. Provided you can get iron fast enough, you can conquer everyone around you with ease before they can get anything to compete with the 4 attack power.
I also like the Ottomans. Cavalry is usually used for the longest period of warring in the game because they are top of the line for quite some time. Siphai put pretty much everything except Cossacks to shame.
As for government, I usually go from despotism to Monarchy asap. Then I use Monarcy until I get to Fascism. It really sets you back when you first get it, and you don't get much out of freshly conquered rivals at first, but it gives really good commerce / corruption management, and you can be as much of a warmonger as you want, not to mention with an industrial civ, you can build infrastructure extremely fast, which is very important when you hit the industrial age.
My favorite tactic is usually just making one gigantic army and chain moving it over mountains if possible to get as close to the largest cities I can. Then I just destroy the cities and take home the captured workers if it is far away from home, or if it is near my border, I will just capture it, leave my wounded units behind to guard the place, then move on.
My other favorite tactic would be early game, just making spearmen or other defencive units, going into the agressive civs(like germany, zulu, russia, arabs, mongols, or anyone else who tries to impede my progress) and tear up all their roads, starting with their resources. Even if you don't have the force necessary to beat them to oblivion or take them over, you can still slow them down massively. If you use terrain to your advantage, large numbers of warriors and archers can't take a group of 5 spearmen on a mountain. It also gives you a good shot at getting a great leader early on.
Civ II was my personal favorite. Maps are bigger, conquest was fun, etc.
Now Civ III and COnquest, arg. There are lots of new features, but it is much harder to conquer!!!! The best Medevial civilization would be the Chinese. +3 movement Riders are crazy killers.

Yup, you know Chinese people rule :D
Civ III was very fun! :D Maybe I'll add that to my list of games-to-reinstall-and-maybe-play-over-the-summer :D

It is definately a game of patience, but there are just so many different aspects to it that it is more than just a war game. I don't like playing as China very much. Riders are nice and all, but they aren't that big of an improvement over a knight. They are faster, and you can tear up a lot of roads with them, but they are no better than knights are in a fight. IMO, the best things to replace with a UU are:
Swordsman
Cavalry
Spearman
Knights and Horsemen are fairly good, but they aren't around nearly as long as Cavalry is. Horsemen are really inferior to Swordsmen in terms of sheer power compared to cost. Swordsmen are slower and can't retreat, but they lose less often to balance it out.
To me, the dumbest UU they ever made(with the exception of the pre conquest Musketeer) is the H'Wa'Cha. I mean, the Cannon is probably the least useful artillery there is. I don't see much merit in making it better.
Speaking of artillery though. Does anyone use Catapults/Trebuchets/Cannons very often? Personally, I find waiting for normal artillery is much more effective. Radar Artillery is insanely powerful, but it takes forever to research the things so it isn't very viable.
