StarForge and SCMDraft let you type in a custom size for your map, but I've never been able to make an uncorrupted map that's bigger than 256x256. Is it possible, or is StarCraft just programmed to take 256x256 as the maximum size? If it is possible, what sizes do work?

I think we determined the biggest size as 256 by 256... And the smallest was something like 30 by 28 or 28 by 30... Something like that. I remember someone made a working map with that size. At least, I remember it on BF. Now that I think about it, Nomozu made a 32 by 256 map and has it saved in his signature back at BF. Click that and check it out. Very workable. I've actually pwned many a computers on it ;)
Oh, and don't try bigger, because even if you can load it in the editor, if you set it higher than like 1000 by 1000, it takes forever to open, if it opens at all... Make sure you have a fast computer before trying ;)

half right, 1000*1000 is a bad idea, but a 512*512 won't be corrupted and will be playeble, the only problem is that you won't be able to open it with the original editor, or xtra editor, so you'll have to use StarForge to make triggers... and this will take years XD

I just tried to make a 512x512 map and I got "Error loading scenario file". I used StarForge 2.0.0 and made sure all the standard map stuff was done. Two start locations, one of them computer, etc.
um... try to make a 512*512 with SCMdraft2, I did... but than It'll be melee... no triggers XD.
anyway 512*512 with triggers and lotsa units will prolly be too long dl and too laggy...

seriosuly? i remember trying that before. i'm almost sure maps larger then 256x256 dont work...
but yes, dont try making a 512 or larger without a fast comp... it does lag, and it lags horribly in the editor.

I just tried a 512x512 map with SCMDraft 2 0.4.0 and I got the same error on both UMS and Melee when I tried to play the game.
I figure lag and filesize will be an issue and I never intended to make a multiplayer map that's 512x512. I'm just curious to see if it works for now.

No, 256x256 is the highest you can go. It's been discussed a lot already on BF and Staredit.net and all them say no too.

Ah. Very good then. I really need to crawl out of my cave.

I heard on Vinzalf's board back in 98 or 99 that 512x512 was possible, but only the first 256x256 was buildable. This was done with hex editing.

hey I'm not blind, I did created a map that was 512*512, and played it.
but the file size was HUGE
and um... forgot what I wanted to say...
anyway 256*256 sould be the biggest you'll ever do if you want people to play it...

Well, The Shifters is 76 meg, and enough people played that, so I'm not worried about filesize. If I made a map that were 512x512 it would only be single player anyway. I have no interest in attaining mass popularity on b.net.
What did you use to make the map Aqo? StarForge 2.0.0 and SCMDraft 2 0.4.0 don't work for me.

256x256 is game engine limit, you can't go higher then that in-game. Unless you can show proof that you ran a 512x512, Ago, then I will assume you are lying. And not done using DarkNova either.
