only a month ago?
k, my advice to you is to finish the campaign (if you didn't yet) and than play melee vs comp till you'll be able to beat 7 comps, than create an account in bnet and get wins into your record.

um, how about no? -_- dont follow that advice, that will lead you straight down the path to being a newbie forever. you need to play against other people, and playing the single player campaign or against computers will make youd evelop bad habits that will make you into a horrible player. just come to op sctactics and play some games.

i do suggest the campaign but not necessilary finishing it just playing some of the earlier tutorial missions, go online and ask for help and if you do truly want to get good then NEVER and i mean NEVER play the fastest possible map

and oh yeah before i forget ask people for help, many battle.net players would like to as the saying goes take someone under their wing

Ok, first of all, no matter what you don, do not listen to sambo, he's too full of himself to give you any relible advice. Plus, if he gets wind your a newbie, he will probably try to destroy you, as he is very prejudice against them. Once you have that written down, the only way i can say that you find your race, is to play them out.

My advice on picking a race, to remember the zerg are known for overwhelming with swarming numbers. The protoss is known for being able to go head to head with anythign else and nine times out of ten or so, crush it. The terrans are best known for keeping their guys safe while they blast the crap out of their enemies. If you are good at expanding and keeping track of massive swarms of guys, and handling them all well, i would say zerg. If you are good at keeping your units back, and using gerueilla tactics, keeping your guys alive while unloading heavy payloads of damage on your enemies, Terrans. If you like to go right up and bash heads with your enemy, protoss is my advice.

Just remember, under no circumstances, is it ever a wise idea just to send a bunch of guys in with no stratagy, unless your doing a zealot rush like 3 minutes into the game or something. Every race has spellcasters, so make note of what they can do, and use it to your advantage. so first step is familiarizing yourself with the units. Then go on battle.net and see how other players tend to use them, and under no circumstaces, do you ever, rate yourself, or other players solely on their record. Doing this can undermind your own self confidence and ability to play, and overrate (or underestimate) your enemy's true strength.

If you choose not to trust anyone's "advice" to you, that is fine. Just remember that the one thing that WILL increase your effectiveness, is time and experience. Always has, always does, always will.

Don't listen to that.. Sambo gives great advice, and as long as you're not stupid he won't be mean to you. As for your question, I would suggest playing Protoss to start with, as they dominate at low levels. Once you start to get a grasp on the game you can just switch races until you decide on one. The best way to get better is to come to op sctactics / blizzforums and play people there, then post the replays here and ask for advice :)

I agree with Hayley. Protoss is best race : ).

If you are new to RTS playing the campaigns is a good way to learn what all the units do and get yourself addicted to the game so that you don't quit after you get continually spanked on battle.net (which will happen when you are just learning).

WTF is op sctactics. I really can't believe that channel is still alive.

so sambo, you havent heard? oh, probably not, because channel blizzforums is always empty except for your bot idling in there, because everyone is in op sctactics =)

The only time I've ever seen more people in your newbie channel than blizzforums channel was last night when you had your tournament.

It's just fags in there too. Ardent, Smaq, and Xanimal etc.

Actually Sambo gives out very good advice. He may flame you (Just ignore that part), and listen to his strategies. They are very good.

Anyway, the best way to become good is play real people, not computers, and not play a money map. Ever. Use a build order that you like, and then do what you need to do.

Yeah, start with toss, and go from there. They require the least micro (control over your units), and force good practices like expansion. That's not to say they are the newb race. However, I do beleive that terran is the best, followed by zerg then toss. There is hardly a difference, and you really should start out as toss. Terran is very difficult to be, and zerg is just weird.

You report a post saying that Sambo flamed you after you make a post like that? Go figure.

Sambo is a very good player, and he knows his stuff. If you're willing to learn he's willing to explain (actually; that's pretty much the attitude of most people in this forum).

Familiarise yourself with the races first by playing the campaigns a bit. You'll probably pick up a couple of bad habits by doing this, but at least you'll understand the race tech trees and get a guist of how things work.

You can also find a lot of replays in this forum and other web sites that show how other players play; try watching a few of these to get an idea of some common strategies.

Lastly... play people. Nothing prepares you for playing StarCraft better than to play against human opponents :)

Sorry Schwitzer. I shouldn't have posted that, but I was tired of her trolling me around the starcraft section.

I recommend terran. They have the least building restrictions and some of their buildings can fly. 'toss and zerg are usually better for advanced players.

Also here are some other tips:

1. Get lots of resource gatherers.
A steady stream of resources is necessary.

2. Watch your building placement. If you put important buildings in the front line, they'll die really fast and you'll lose.

3. Play against humans. Comps have different strategies. Human players are more diverse, they're smarter, and they typically respond better to situations. For example, if you're wrecking a comps base, it'll send out one probe to make a new one. A human will send out eight probes and about six fighting units.

terran are by far the worst race for a newbie to play. playing as terran will get you into a horrible turtling habit, and their strategies require alot more raw apm than the other races, so newbies cant really keep up.

I agree. Plus they aren't a mass race, u must balance groups even more than in other races 2 work foes around... ;)
They're the best at turtling due 2 range weapons. Almost all Terran units have'em.
