Munch's famous 'Scream,' 'Madonna' stolen (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5787000/)
It appears that armed men walked in, with at least handguns in view, and took two famous paintings from a museum in Oslo, Norway. Such a sad event.
On the interesting side, this is the second time 'Scream' has been stolen from an Oslo museum.
I guess this really isn't capable of brewing much discussion, it's more of a FYI post.

Wow, that sucks. So many paintings keep getting stolen throughout the years. Most get back to the original owner or whoever it is, but sometimes the are lost forever.

What doth compel such fiendish agitators who wouldst threaten to rip thy idyllist's endeavors in twain?!

I just came here to make a thread about this, since this would probably be an important event for my friend EdvardMunch (the WarBoards.org dood.) We're sorry Edvard.
I think it's such a coincidence that the other day/week you told me all about 'Edvard Munch' and his famous painting 'The Scream.' At least now perhaps awareness of the already famous painting might increase. I mean, just now I was thinking about how artistically pleasing the person going :o in 'The Scream' was, and usually those aren't the sorts of paintings I enjoy.
What I read on the news was that they were surprised the security of the gallery wasn't tougher, robbing the painting was as easy as robbing a dairy/7eleven/convienience store (depending on where you live.) But I thought to myself, who wouldn't surrender at gunpoint? What was the art gallery meant to do, so that the paintings would be more secured? I couldn't think of any possibilities.
I know what you mean. Louvre has some insane security systems. Noone of you have probably seen the movie "Rembrandtkuppet" (danish). In it, a couple of pathetic hobby-thieves go in and steal the only real Rembrandt in Denmark by mistake (they were going for another one). Fun =P.
Well, as this is part of my national heritage I feel I should join in on the group weeping. I probably can't tell you a lot about Munch (the past one) that Edvard (the current one) doesn't already know, so I'll just shut up. Most of these stolen paintings usually show up again anyway. They're much too valuable for anyone to destroy them.

It's Norway....what do you expect :P
Edvard Munch is a really cool painter, if you haven't you should go see a museum with some of his works. I love paintings and there's really no comparison to seeing the real thing on a wall.
It's Norway....what do you expect :P
What are you implying here? :)

/me dodges
Anyway, how did those guys steal it? Wasn't there any sucurity? XD
They just walked in in full daylight and took it. Lol. There are loads of photos of the entire act, on the page Mod posted you can see them carrying the paintings to the car. Man, this is embarrassing.
At least there's 3 other authentic screams then.

Well there are a lot of things the art museum could have done. I don't know them all because I don't really know much about security, but one this is that the things holding the painting to the wall should have been much stronger. Also like the article said, there should be an alarm that goes off when the painting is removed. More security guards, and stuff like that. You know what I mean.

While I agree that security should have been tighter, there are limits to the extent this could be applied. If the material, I'm assuming some sort of twine or wiring, connecting the paintings to the walls were stronger, if someone ripped them away it might cause great damage to the paintings. As for guards, they must be careful so as not to damage the art in the event of a standoff and/or shootout.
I think that their idea here might be that it is better to let the bandits take it, then hunt them down using the crack Norwegian version of SWAT teams and bust them. A well planned strike could help assure that the paintings are recovered with the least amount of damage. And I might note that paintings can be repaired of minor damage by very, very, skilled artists.
Another point on the security. Unless I am mistaken, Norway's crime rate is much lower than the US, so it is logical that their security measures would be more lax.
