Starcraft, alpha and beta.

The early alpha, alpha, early beta and beta stage of starcraft seems even more awsome than the starcraft we have now... I was wondering... Is there ANY way I could play the alpha or beta phase of starcraft? Like, if someone hosted it on their own server? Thanks.

Goliaths look elite and they have machineguns, rockets, and flame throwers. Uber. Dragoons were called Templars and the tile sets were just plain out beautiful. 'Specially the beta buildings.

no, they are gone forever. you could still possibly get your hands on a beta cd, but you cannot play it because it only works on the beta servers, which are gone

Wouldn't you be able to crack it and configure it to connect to your own server?

i remember reading about a few groups of people trying, but i think its pretty hard-coded into it...if it were possible, then the .iso would be all over the net and people would be playing it on private servers, but ive never heard of anything like that

I know some people have set a up a server like that to play it. But it's really buggy and the game would crash if you had more then 3 people. It's also illegal to set up a server.

Blizzard should make Starcraft 2 have all the beta stuff. Science Vessels with legs. Dropships that land to pick up units. Uber looking goliaths... It makes me want to play it even more. >: arg

you couldnt do that with a custom map, you would have to make a mod

Since it's my new misson from god to get starcraft, alpha and beta, I started looking on ebay... What I did find, was starcraft, retribution, and starcraft, stratospace. Both add-ons to the starcraft game.

wtf. Were they like, really, really rare or somthing?
I must continue on, for my journy of knowledge is far from over. XD

all of the non-broodwar expansions are crap, theyre basically just a collection of 100 or so crappy maps, which you could probably download for free somewhere

It would be hard to get the beta as only 1000 were given out on the original Starcraft and about 1000 more on Brood War.

There was a guy, I think maybe 2 days ago, that said he is willing to sell a starcraft beta cd. No one here wanted it, so we recommended he sells it on ebay. Keep searching on ebay, because he said he would sell it there. Also look in starcarft related forums, because he might post there. I don't know.

no, they are gone forever. you could still possibly get your hands on a beta cd, but you cannot play it because it only works on the beta servers, which are gonethere are people who have the beta version of starcraft and I heard that at least two have also the beta version of broodwar
one of them is Suicidal Insanity (?) from Blizzforums, however I heard he wont give the broodwar beta because it had a super mapeditor with debug option (guess what he is making a map editor...)
some people said that they could give anyone the starcraft beta, but they disappeared plus they didnt have some patches to make the game work/add some features and balance things (not sure though)
some people played the game on private servers, I read that players have to change a file called battle.snp (probably they just need to change something in the registry..)
I heard that the mpq files have some strange formats and cannot be opened using standard winmpq (probably it's pure crap, to make people not search for the beta) -the maps may not work because of the beta 57format. however there is a person called Heimdall, who knows how to change maps from that format (probably he has the beta too)


It's also illegal to set up a server.OMG! Im scared. I think it's legal to have a server unless you demand money for playing on it.

I think that people dont want to spread the beta, because they had to write some sort of contract and cannot publish it or they will be punished. Blizzard can recognise them through cd-keys. But's just my speculation.


IMO people would give you the beta if you paid them, some could even give them for free but from what I see many people wish that it wouldnt spread (for example mods at blizzforums closed a thread, people having the bw beta said that they will never give it).

It sucks, I wish I could know what the blue+red archons were, how did zeal rage work etc.

Plus you can ask BSTRhino, maybe he has it, he could have downloaded it, when he was a mod at bf.

actually starcraft beta and starcraft broodwar betas are all over the internet and you could play them for a while. Now people are tired of it so i dont think you'll get to play it n e time soon
