I am finished with my map and I have it on good recommendation that SCUM Protector is the best map protector out there. Someone told me PROEdit was but when I protectedwith PROEdit I was able to open the map up in even regualr staredit!

Anyway, I am trying to use SCUMEdit but I keep getting this error message when I try to protect the scenario.chk file that says Invalid Scenario.CHK file. (no version Tag) Use MPQview.exe to extract a new scenario.chk file

can anyone help me, or direct me to an even better map protector?

Did you save the file in PROEdit? That happens to alot of people. If that isn't the problem, try protecting with StarForge. That might work.

Create a back-up, then protect in StarForge.

Have a good one. ^_^

True, but recently discovered by me, SF isn't fully protected. I have found a strange, but easy way... Sort of... To unprotect SF maps now... I only have told DD, BST, Nomozu, and Heimdal so far (I think I told Heim at least o.O), and those shall be my only people to know HOW I did it. Everyone else leaks information on this kind of stuff, so I dare not say... o.O

P.S. ProEDIT is your best choice right now...

The popular map protectors are usually the ones you shouldn't use, because SCunprotector can unprotect them. Use an un-common one and you should be fine.

Common ones include, GUEdit, StarForge, SCToolKit

Starforge's protector doesn't work as best as Proedit. Proedit however, does have its bugs.
Strings are messed up if you use the compress button.

Another would be, is when you have protected the map, the units HP are all messed up.
eg. if you have a tank's HP at 700/700, it turns out to be 150/700 in game.

However, Proedit is the best one out there.

Btw Geno, I know how to open SF maps too.

A hint for those who want to protect their maps:

No map protectors are perfect. Anybody can un-protect any map if he knows how to use a hex-editor, knows the .chk specs, and has enough food and drinks stacked up nearby his computer.

But usually the n00b mapmakers, the type most likely to steal your map, do not meet all of the above requirements (most don't have enough food at home :D).

Protecting a map will only slow expert map-stealers down, which gives you enough time to release a new version of the map!

I greatly discourage using SCUM Protector, on the grounds that it offers the weakest protection possible. DrunkenWrestler said it took him only a half-hour to break the protection, and he has only minor hex knowledge. I say that StarForge is currently the best, even with its flaws.

Well, PROEdit didn't work, I was able to open the map right up in regular staredit!
SCUM won't work at all, I don't have time to do everything GUE requires.

Is starforge's map protector complex to use? If not do you have a link as to where I might find it? Thanks.

I am optimally looking for a protector that at leasts will not allow the map to be opened by any map editor. I know people can unprotect, but most ppl can't do that so a decent protector that works is good for me.

When you use these editors, don't extract the chk and try to protect that. Protect the scm/scx.

The only reason I protect maps is because I don't want noobs messing around with them. If somebody knows how to unprotect a map then they know what they are doing and chances are they arn't doing it to rigg or steal the map.

yea I recommend that if you can I think SCXE has a map protector and I am sure the it would take experts to open but not entirly sure if I am right about scxe have a map protector I have never used it yet :p

I do plan to use a map protector when I have finished working on my rpg

wich hasn't made its debut yet due to some major and minor complications

o can anyone tell me if I am right about scxe

You're wrong. SCXE has no map protection features. I'm looking forward to your RPG.
