Seeing that most of you like a neutral antaogonist who is intelligent, I've decided to continue the next question.
What kind of stories do you guys like reading - mainly about the Good Vs Bad
Explanation of poll:
The good guys are listed first, the bad guys are listed second:
Do you like reading books where...:
One on One - There is one good guy, and one bad guy. They usually have "super powers" or something special about them. No one else is involved. Maybe a sidekick. The antagonist is usually equal to the protagonist. (Examples: Batman, Spiderman {I haven't seen Spider Man 2, and I doubt they changed it)} )
Team vs One - This is where the protagonist and his team go against one guy. The team is fairly small, maybe 3-6 people There may be more people on each side, but the main characters are the 3-6 people. (e.g. Sort of like the Harry Potter series, where mainly the three go around doing the stuff. Note that the antagonist does not have a team of his own, but sometimes can.)
One vs Team - The opposite of above, where the good guy goes against a team of bad guys
Team vs Team - Where the antagonist team goes against the protagonist team - (E.g. X-men, Parts of Star Wars)
Group vs Group - Same thing as above, but with more people. Maybe 10-20. Each character is not as powerful, but has a significant role. (e.g. Lord of the Rings)
Group vs Army - The protagonists are usually some super-human group that takes down an army. (Lord of the Rings can be classifed against them, because the small group is going against the army - even though they are not directly fighting)
Faction/Army vs Faction/Army - A huge scale war, where hundreds (up to millions) of people are going at each other in an all out, epic battle. (Parts of Lord of the Rings, Star Wars)
I know, there are a lot more options. I'm just wondering what you like....

I voted one on one. Epic battles are getting boring, and group fighting tends to result in a large group of underdeveloped characters (that and, usually, most members of the group are pretty irrelevant anyway). In one on one, we see what the villain and hero are made of because they are completely out on their own, they have no help. You can also create a more indepth relationship between the hero and villain. Face/Off is a great example of the strength of the one vs one format (true, there's also Pollux Troy, but he's hardly a super-villain on the level of Castor, and so I don't consider Castor to be in a group with his brother). Kill Bill is also a good example, in that The Bride goes up against each member on her hit list individually.
If it were an option, I would have gone with multiple, non-cooperative badguys. I don't mean a team of badguys, I mean a bunch of badguys who work against each other. I find it fascinating to watch people with varying interests make and break alliances as it is in their favor and have to adapt to each others' game plans.

|One vs. Team|
Protagonist figts a few antagonsits which are about as powerful as he is.
It would be better if the the good guy is a former member of that team, so
he encounters his old comrades (but betrayers) and that's why they know each
other's strong and weak aspects.
Each member of the team is an individual character and plays a role in the story.
I like it when the good guy takes them out one by one with each fight being very
dramatic.
In the end there's this last bad guy left (the leader).
In the final fight both of the bad and good guy die.
I hate happy endings.

I think that when you watch on superhero go up against like 100 guys (save the Matrix trilogy) it sort of gets boring after awile... I like epic battle beacause well, they're epic, and always exciting.

One versus one is the coolest. I have the same reason as EdvardMunch.

Wow, interesting choices for you all... The poll is pretty much balanced, without leaning strongly towards one thing or another. I would've originally thought different.

I've actually started writing a story, and it seems to be a team vs team thing. I woke up one night, and had this excellent idea. I almost had the "first chapter"
The poll just goes to show you that everyone likes a little bit of everything. With the right story and language, you can make any opposition between two forces fun and enjoyable.

Based on the descriptions you provided, I prefer group vs group. Coming in a close second is one vs one.

Group vs Group turn out to be good. I'm always up for a good One Vs One, once in a while. Hell, all of them make good stories if done right. :)

I like one vs group because....
One vs group team is so cool ^^ 1 main character is really strong and there is also a evil main character who is slightly weaker but nonetheless a great threat and highly dangerous. But to compensate for his weakness, he has a group of goons who are quite good themselves. And so the good main character goes up against the bad guy and his goons.
Just an opinion ^^

Very true. I've seen a lot of good movies like that. It's good especially when it's like a revenge movie, and the good guy gets his ass whooped at the beginning. He comes back, learns the "way" or something, and kicks everyone's asses from the low henchmen to the evil boss himself...
The more I think about each choice, the harder it gets... :)

I voted army vs army cause you aren't fighting alone. And you aren't fighting against one enemy. All allong the history the leaders didn't fought their battles alone. They had their armys such as Caesar, Napoleon, Hitler (sory for this last one but it was necesary).
Aragorn alone didn't defeated alll the orcs alone, Warcraft Heros, etc. didn't do it. So why when see ten soldiers/heroes/superheroes figthing we call it a battle??

Well, let's take a good look at it like this:
In Large scale battles, you get to focus a bit on a purpose, the warriors are fighting for, and the intesity of a large scale war gives you an adrenilene rush that is hard to avoid. Take a look at Starwars 2 and 6 (or any of them for that matter, but those two had the coolest war-scenes) However, when one side starts owning the other on an unbelivible scale, it starts to suxxor.
In one on one battles, you can focus more on the actuall two charicters, to give a feeling for the two, like edvard munch said in Face Off. (i think Kill Bill classifies as one on team though.) You start to get a feel for the one goodguy, and his struggle against his darker nemesis. In one on one battles, it is not so much the gradousity of the situation that can take your breath away, but more that you have to get a feel for the hero and the villian both, and feel like you are this main charicter.
In one on group battles, I tend to go "meh, sux" for one reason: I don't give a damn who you trained under, you can't fucking dodge 40 people shooting at you with sub-machine guns who are all "professional assassins/gunmen" all while managing to shoot them down with a couple pistols and a knife. When it starts to blow the realistic barrier, I'm outta there. Now, if the one guy is like this super-slick ninja, or some shit, and engauges them under the cover of darkenss, or etc, then I am back on board. Normally, I don't like the one guy killing a bazillion badguys, all going through like "I am god, thou art owned." through the whole battle.
In team on one, you start to feel a bit more epathetic towards the one badguy, and start rooting against the team of goodguys. (at least that's what i almost always end up doing for some reason)
In team on team conflicts, you have to focus a bit on the charicters, and their relationships with each other and how they all work together to make the story complete. If you start to focus more on any other one charicter than another, then the story starts to become all about this one charciter, and his/her quest, with disreguard to anyone else like they don't matter.
I would have to say, team on team, and army vs army with leaders/heros are the best in my opinion, and have done very well as you can tell by movie records. Star wars and LOTR both followed these, and have become very influential movies in our time. Of course, I am just as happy to take anything as long as it does'nt focus too much on one charicter, unless that one charicter is the main charicter which the story revolves around.

Wow, I was surprised to see this thread revived. :)
Team VS Team in my opinion is the best. I sort of based my RP off of this. It seems as if the poll has changed a lot since this thread died - army/faction vs army/faction is in the lead now.

Personally, I perfer to see Bad Guys vs. REALLY Bad Guys.
What I mean is that neither side has good intention on the part of their people.
Large scale wars are a favorite of mine, esspecially space battles.

I chose GvG (Group Versus group). I usually like the idea of two groups/factions fightingagainst each other. (Sort of Like Mech Warrior or KOTOR :) )
Either big epic battles (army vs army), glorious last stands (which would be group vs army)
or group vs group.
Faction/Army thing. I recommend that everyone reads the Dragoncrown War cycle by Michael A. Stackpole. It starts with Dark Glory War, then moves into Fortress Draconis, When Dragons Rage, and The Grand Crusade. Excellent series, one of the best ever.

Having been in love with the Dune Chronicles, I voted Faction Vs Faction, though I liked LOTR and SW as well.
Ender I'll have to read the books you mentioned. Are they Science Fiction, Fantasy or Fiction ?
from the names i would hazard a guess at fantasy
might give them a try myself actually

What about team vs. one? Or army vs. one? (Good vs. bad format)
I'd like to see a movie where some huge ass group of people or the whole world is fighting one guy, this guy doesn't have any henchmen or anything, he's just really powerful. Or something. If anyone knows a movie like this let me know :)

Fantasy. Stackpole is an amazing writer; he conceived the Star Wars: X-Wing series, which has led or contributed to every Star Wars book since. If you've read the New Jedi Order series, he was one of the architects and writers for that, and his unique characters are now found playing very important roles throughout the Star Wars universe. In addition, he has multiple other personally invented worlds of fantasy and sci-fi, which I greatly enjoy. His website is www.stormwolf.com
This now leads me to an idea. I shall create a thread in which every few weeks or so I shall introduce and author and some of his works, most likely an author that isn't too famous, or I shall spotlight a book or something. Yes, I think I shall do this tomorrow, starting with Mr. Stackpole.

one on one battles are the most intense i think. Epic battles have their appeal but when it's mano vs mano like lightsaber duels in Star Wars, the two Spiderman movies, etc, i just get more involved in the fight to see who is superior.
it's just more intense all-around, personally and emotionally.
