View Full Version : StarCraft Editor was unable to open the file....

When I try to open some downloaded maps, I get an error like:

StarCraft Editor was unable to open the file '<file location>'.
Please make sure that the file is a valid Starcraft Data file.

Now, I assume that these maps have been locked. Many of the questions I ask on here could be solved if I could look at the map. I know they would want to lock the maps so that no one could change the name and claim credit, or rig them for a players favor..but I have good intentions.

I guess I just want to know if there is any way to open a file that gives me this error when I try.

Thanks, Jeremy

unprotecting maps is highly looked down upon here by mappers. linking to an unprotector or anything like that will get loads of hate posts... a few members here have an unprotector, but none of them will divulge it to you, and unless you can prove that the map is your own, (like needing to unprotect cuz you need to edit and dont have an un-protected version) none of them will un-protect maps for you.

Usually you just have to ask the map maker for an unprotected version. If they're nice, they'll give it to you.

I do not wish to be looked down upon, only to benifit from others hard work.

hm..that doesn't sound right.

There are some amazing things that people can do with the editor. Instead of asking the forum how to do every little thing, I can just open a map to satisfy my 'How'd they do that?' needs.

Stick to the forums. I, for one, would be angry if someone unprotected my map. It's just a part of you, like art, or something.

People worked hard on their maps, and its not as fun stealing someones knowledge, you should learn something or ask pro map makers.

Yes, also, unprotecting maps is against this forum's rules too, because like hideho said, we consider it the same way we look at hacking.

Take a look at "starcraft x-tra editor" and "starforge 2" those should be able to do any tricks you have seen so far in any map. "SCM Draft" should also be able to help, but ive never tried it.

I think that when u refer 2 There are some amazing things that people can do with the editor. Instead of asking the forum how to do every little thing, I can just open a map to satisfy my 'How'd they do that?' needs. can be answered in the bellow paragraph. ;)

Simply ask the map author 4 the trigger list on an exported file, format *.trg, that StarEdit (Blizzard's original editor) or SCXE (SC X-tra Editor (http://www.stormcoast-fortress.net/?file=gaming/starcraft/programs/scxe/download.php)) can do. If he's a cool fella, he/she'll do it! ;)
Additional doubts will be taken out upon questions.

---------
Take the folk's opinion on this 1... it's the best u can do, SamuraIdReI. :)
As part of my advice, get the apps Gia talked about and leave the ProEdit as the last step on map making... :D

Wrong. Unprotecting a map is hacking, at least by the accepted definition. It is considered hacking if you use someone elses program, which doesn't make sense... but that's the accepting definition anyway. If you are using a program to do something no-one wants you to do, whether it's a maphack or an unprotecter, it's hacking
