Sorry if I missed a post somewhere but what program lets you use square tiles for terrain? That is, without the edges? Thanks.

The thing you must understand is that ALL terrain is square terrain. All "isometric" terrain is just a bunch of squares that fit together to look like diamonds. There are two types of tiles: Edge tiles and subtiles. Edge tiles are the various edge graphics that fit together to make terrain flow. Subtiles are basically all compatible and account for the random 'clutter' you see in terrain.

There are two programs to let you easily switch between isometric and square. These are
1:StarForge
and
2:SCMDraft2

SCMD2 is much better for terrain, because it actually uses the isom section of scm files to correctly place isometric terrain. You can also change brush size using + and - in SCMD2.

StarForge has by far the best trigger editing capabilities of any program. It's buggy though, and each version has different problems, some worse than others. SF lets you do square terrain, but is fairly worthless for isometric terrain.

And you can find all those programs in the Starcraft Editing Reference thread.

Can I use SCMDraft2 for terrain and X-tra for everything else or will I get some sort of errors?

no, you wont get errors or anything. different editors can be used together fine.
