Intersting situation here, the origional insurgents in Fallujah armed themselves and freed the hostages that were being held in their city by terrorists. A change of events I'd say.
"The kidnappers have nothing to do with the resistance," Abu-Jaafar told The Associated Press by telephone.
So basically the people of Fallujah believe the kidnappers to be outsiders who aren't really fighting for their freedom but rather just causing more problems.
Thoughts? Opinions?

It would appear that, in Fallujah at least, the Iraqis are willing to take the law into their own hands and do what is right to control their own cities. I am sure that, given the proper leadership, Iraqis in other cities would do the same, however US Military Presence in other cities might deter such bravery on the part of the Iraqis.
I believe this is a sign that Iraqis are ready, and willing, to take control of their own affairs, although semilar sentiments must be found throughout the nation, and not only in the most dangerous city.

Maybe things are finally going to progress....
Its about time some people stood up and took control of events, although it must have been fairly hard.

In my opinion it's more of a Fallujah thing. It's one of the few places were actual members of the town would just pick up arms and liberate some hostages because they think the people are just giving them a bad name. In other areas you have the Iraqi police mixing it up with the terrorists, but I think it's a rarity that you'd have people just stand up and do something like this.
I'm not saying that this couldn't happen, it's just that you won't find ex-insurgents rising up to fend off terrorists who they believe are doing a bad thing. Talk about Iraqi partiots. But nevertheless in cities all over Iraq, police are fighting back and alteast contain the terrorists. I agree with you Modred though that the Iraqi people are beginning to grow tired of the extremism that's going on. They're willing to fight (like what happened in Fallujah) but not do actual terrorist acts.
Basically though although police are fighting and defending Iraqis more, only in Fallujah would civilians just get together and do this.
EDIT: Alright so I repeated myself a lot... when you're tired it happens. Plus there's so many religious threads I need to reply in too. Ugg. *falls asleep*

Yes, you rambled quite a bit Cygnus. ;)
My main point was that if the rest of Iraq were under similar circumstances, being lacking US involvement and minimal Iraqi Police involvement, similar results could come from anywhere in the nation, thus proving that Iraqis can take care of themselves when given the chance. They don't need us to guide every little step.
Another facet of my argument is that in areas in which the US or IP are fighting terroists, the civillians are generally bound by the law from taking action themselves less they be mistaken for insurgents and attacked by the "good guys."
