Whitecoal

The town of Whitecoal is a place of opportunity. Of adventure. Of fortune. Of treachery. For the moment, it has remained relatively unknown. But somehow, maybe out of luck, maybe because of all the deeds, both good and bad, accredited to you, you found out about it. People told you. Little whispers. And now, you ride there. Maybe you can make a better living. Maybe you can stop all the killing. Or maybe this will be the place where the killings you do go unnoticed by the town’s small sheriff department.

Will you be the one to take apart Whitecoal, brick by brick, cowboy by cowboy, until it is nothing but an empty shell of what used to be a town? Or will you be the one to build it up into the booming town of fortune that all of Western America will flock to?

Harold “Rowdy” Jones had always preferred walking to riding. There was something about all the jolts and bumps that he could never get quite used. It was a silent sunset, and Harry figured he would have to sleep one more night out in the wilderness before he could make it to Whitecoal. Rowdy lifted one hand cautiously from the reins of his horse and quickly wiped away the remains of his last meal that had gotten stuck in his unshaven beard. His black hair was growing long, and he made a mental note to get that cut before he went all around town.

Rowdy had left his gang back in Missouri, where the James-Younger gang was starting to run wild. There was no train left unguarded, unrobbed nowadays. He needed somewhere was there would prosperity. Somewhere small, a quiet, peaceful town. An undefended town. So he rode onwards, as the sun set behind him, creating the perfect picture to be put in the stores as a postcard. That was until he turned and his coat brushed back, revealing a Colt and a Peacemaker at his belt. A Smith and Wesson pistol was in a shoulder holster and a shotgun clattered against the spare ammo in the pouch at the horse’s side. For nearly the hundredth time, he clutched his groin, cursing the horse and this cheap saddle he had bought. But he would bare it. It was worth what lay ahead.

****

“If you boys will just come out peacefully, there is no need for shootin’!”

A gunshot answered the voice, blowing the man’s head apart with a shotgun blast. More shots sounded and the self-appointed law men ran for cover Another gunshot came out from the inside of the building, signaling the shopkeeper was dead and the robbing was about to begin in earnest.

***

Well, here is another one of my RPs. This one is a Western RP, taking place in the fictitious town of Whitecoal. It will start with a robbery occurring in a general store, since there is no bank established in the town yet.

You can be on one of two sides, or somewhere in the middle. There are the bad guys and the good guys, the gangs and the sheriffs/deputies. Now, take note, this isn’t going to be a PvP kind of RP. It is going to be a traditional RP with a storyline about the growth of the town of Whitecoal. Look at it as two different paths you can take. The run-ins with each other will be rare. As a sheriff, you help build the town up. As a robber, you get the money for personal gain, avoid the deputies with aliases and what-not, and use your money for building stuff for yourself for eventually taking over the town.

I will be playing as Harold “Rowdy” Jones and narrating in italics. You can start the game in one of three places. The first is on the road, like Rowdy is, and riding towards Whitecoal. The second is in the general store, taking part in the robbery. The last is behind cover as one of the law-men. If you pick either of the second two, you have kind of picked a side. If you pick the first one, you can ride down the fine line in the middle of the two sides.

In all honesty, I don’t know how the story will turnout. I have some basic ideas and a few twists I want to stick in here and there, but it will be built by the players. Robberies will take place by the players. Foiling them is up to the sheriffs.

Play fair. No cheating, basic stuff. As GM I reserve the right to say any action is invalid, such as a guy being sent to spy on the robbers and coming back with their entire plan and then the sheriffs massacre them. Whatever. If anyone does die, a new character can be started, as long as they are related to the dead character. Take this into account when making your character sheet.

I will post my character sheet and then start up the RP once enough people join.

Everything may be subject to minor changes.

ok Questions:
Ok, I know this is a Western RP, but what decade would this be in? I mean, I was thinking about a char that just got back from fighting in the Civil War.
2)Do we need family members?

Any suggestions on weapons we should have? I'm having a bit of trouble finding a list of weapons from that time-frame.

I'll be a robber. Is a rich adventurer/gang leader alright?

Character Sheet
Starting Location: Just outside the town on a hilltop.
Name: Barry Orange Bakerson
Height: 6'0
Age: 43
Number of Male Family Members: 2 siblings, a dead father
Number of Female Family Members: 0 siblings, a forgotten mother
Previous Experiences (Robberies, sheriffs, etc)(Optional):

He's never killed a sheriff (though he has killed); instead he's an opportunist in that he has robbed hidden caches (buried in mine shafts and even those buried straight in the middle of wide grasslands) and small settlements alike. He once owned a mining business, however when resources ran out and the town 'went to shit', he was hit with sudden rationality in that it is useless to build something up of peak value if it'll all just inevitably collapse in on you. He used the money acquired since (after selling the private enterprise) to finance his own syndicate committed to exploitation. Since then, robbery and other forms of exploitation (such as fraud) have become an art. Those who join his small organization of a few dozen are trained and then determined worthy. Recently, he has begun to lay low, observing upon other self-respecting thieves and rotten apples to determine how mighty they may be, and if they may be persuaded into working for him (sometimes even in a kind manner should Barry feel like it).

Barry considers himself an intellectual, however he has never taken to writing books; preferring the action of life. He is also an avid darwinist, believing that only the strongest should serve his organization and him. So far, he has yet to be challenged for his own traits and the greatest threat to him is a force of law that has the resource of a backing.

Weapons: Speedloaders (mostly rifles), machine guns (the primitive kind), six shooters, and exotic weapons like eight shooters and twelve shooters. Also, manual loading 'duck guns' and double barreled shotguns for powa! ;)

And don't forget cannons, though those are kind of rare and expensive outside of the army I should think. As for melee weapons, we can pretty much go crazy (did they have switchblades back then? Say, a switchblade that launches from your leather boot.), since industrialization leaves plenty of options.

Bakerson's Weapons (carrying): Speed Loader Long Rifle (over 500 meter range, but very difficult to aim at those distances); Switchblade in his boot and a tough stilleto dagger that can be hooked onto his rifle; concealable micro twelve shooter (very small bullets)

Weapons (hidden in a wagon in the plains): Double Barrel Shotgun with three full belts of shells, several .44 caliber colt six shooters, nitroglycerin (in steel lock boxes)

Age:29
Number of Male Family Members:0
Number of Female Family Members:0
Previous Experiences (Robberies, sheriffs, etc)(Optional):Becoming an orphah when his parents died, Matt turned to the only thing he knew how to do:shoot. He put on shows in NYC where he was born. One day while at practice, Matt's friend accidently shot himself. This haunted Matt and he swore never to shoot for show and only for self-defense. Matt served in The Civil War where he fought at Gettysberg. He was a born marksmen and picked Rebels off from trees. He moved to Whitecoal to become a sheriff.

Weapons: Two Single Action Army pistols in holsters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Full_cock3.jpg). A Sharps carbine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Sharps_1863_Carbine_.50-70_Calibre_antique_original.jpg) slung over his shoulder and a Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Pattern1853Rifle.jpg)

Matt ducked his head when he saw the sheriff get hit. "Now the hell breaks loose." He grimaced. He aimed the rifle in one of the windows of the Grocery Store and started pumping in shots with his repeating rifle. Question, can I be a gambler who's like neutral or something. Basically a guy who spends his life playing poker/other games but can fire a gun and works for whomever pays him the most, or does things that serve his interest?

Imo, civilians (neutrals) seem fine, but in a small town you'll probably end up taking sides. Because somebody like Bakerson will probably find a way to con you out of your money. :D

Bakerson is also neutral arguably. He doesn't actively seek to destroy towns. He just exploits for his own ends.

Sure. Give it a shot. If you need to, take a side in the end. You will end up in the middle of a gunfight. No doubt about it,

I'll be a robber. Is a rich adventurer/gang leader alright?

Sure. Once again, we'll see how it turns out. Who you are affects the growth of the town.

Any suggestions on weapons we should have? I'm having a bit of trouble finding a list of weapons from that time-frame.

Good question. That brings up the fact that I cleverly forgot to put a spot for weapons on the character sheet. However, it will still work. In the course of the first battle or while you are riding to town, just mention your weapons.

You don't have to be as specific as saying a Colt 1911 like you would in most RPs set in a different time frame. Here you can just say the "brand" name. Colt, Smith and Wesson, Peacemaker, or even something as simple as a shotgun. If you wanted to be unique, you could make up a gunsmith's name or name your guns so you don't have to have them be real guns.

Starting Location: In a pub, two buildings away from the grocery store.
Name: Frank Stillman
Height: 6 feet
Age: 37
Number of Male Family Members: Deceased father and a brother
Number of Female Family Members: Deceased mother and two younger sisters
Weapons (Optional): A Peacemaker and a knife.
Previous Experiences (Robberies, sheriffs, etc)(Optional): Frank has quite a bit of experience in handling both sheriffs and deputies as well as outlaws. Being a gambler and sometimes winning he was the subject of a robbery many times, and probably just as many times was he taken in custody by the law after getting drunk and igniting a conflict(in the true sense of the word, he once set a pub on fire after loosing his money in a poker game).

Starting Location: On the road to the town of Whitecoal

Name: Harold "Rowdy" Jones

Height: 5' 8"

Age: 34

Number of Male Family Members: Two brothers (John and Patrick), step-father disappeared after impregnating Rowdy's mother. Father was killed by poison, assassin unknown although any possible suspects are dead.

Number of Female Family Members: One sister (Margaret) who tends to Rowdy's sick mother. The sister is the perfect girl and is engaged to a banker. The entire family disapproves of this, including Rowdy, because of the banker's violent past against woman including several counts of rape and one of murder, although no charges have been pressed because of his status.

Weapons (Optional): Colt and Peacemaker on gun belt around waist, Smith and Wesson pistol in shoulder holster (a smaller caliber pistol for "quieter" attacks, even though someone could hear it all the way across town), one shotgun always kept in the place he is staying, and a tiny knife kept in his boot for when all else fails.

Previous Experiences (Robberies, sheriffs, etc)(Optional): The sheriff of a small town in Missouri, Rowdy grew up like a gentleman until his father died. It wasn't until he was sick for three weeks that he traced both his father's death and his sickness back to a cup of tea. Rowdy didn't drink much of his because he had just gotten over a minor cold. His father drank it all. After searching for any assassins and time after time being forced to release the suspects from jail, Rowdy turned to other methods. Armed with his weapons, he killed every single suspect he had found. The next morning, he left town and joined up with a gang. Only two successful minor robberies were committed before Rowdy, having earned his name from getting drunk before each robbery, started off in search of fame. His quest took him across the west till he heard about Whitecoal.
