I am currently working with EatItUp, AmakusaShougo, AraiShakku and SoV_Haldir on the next LOTR map, The Battle of the Five Armies.
First obvious problem, it was really six armies, unless you count the Wargs and Goblins as one. so is it going to be 5 v 1 or 4 v 1? That's the first major obstacle since it would be so many people versus one or two enemies. Two evil at most if you seperate the Wargs and Goblins. Or should I not even bothe rincluding the eagles or making them seperate since they didn't do a whole lot?
The good news is that since this battle takes place in one area we can limit it to that and make 'away camps" for spawn without having to actually do the kingdoms of each race, or do you guys think we should do a whole ME map like siege of gondor and last alliance?
UPDATE----
It won't be a madness, I promise you that. There will be buildings and spawns, maybe even capturable castles.
I am considering doing a map of upper middle earth since that takes care of everyone involved in the battle (from Forlindon all the way over the to Iron Hills with Forodwaith capping it and probably stopping at Mirkwood and Lorien for the southern edge).
Does anyone have some empty maps of North ME with the terrain laid out I could borrow? I guess I could could take a map from LA or SoG and delete the units, but I'd like a more detalied map of just north ME.
My original plan was just to do a detailed map of the Vale of Anduin, Erebor, and the valley beneath it all the way to the Lake and have "Battle Camps" for each race on the edges, but your idea sounds good too.
Tentative plan is
Force 1:
Player 1: Lakemen - Terrans (main armies will be zealots and marines and ghosts & tanks)
Player 2: Mirkwood Elves - Protoss (main armies will be dark templars, templars and dragoons & carriers)
Player 3: Thorin's 13 Dwarves(prob make most of them heroes & Dwarves) & dwarf armies from the Iron hills - Terran (main armies will be marines, ghosts, firebats & reavers)
(tell me if you think I should include this) Player 4: Beorn (mix) : I'll probably make him an archon that can change into a ghost or marine with a beacon, and he will get "bears" as his soldiers, probably also archons but weaker.
All good will eventually spawn eagles of their own (probably going to be wraiths or mutalisks) since the eagles didn't really do enough to be made a player by themselves. Allthough if I did this I wonder who would get Gwahir as a hero.
Force 2
Player 5: Goblins(Orcs of the North) - Zerg (main armies will be infested Durans, infested kerrigans, suicide terrans & guardians)
Player 6: Northern Wolves(Wargs) - Zerg (main armies will be zerglings, ultralisks, hydralisks & vultures ).
Both Force2 would of course be slightly overpowered to compensate for 3-4 Force 1 players.
Both evil will eventually spawn combo unit Warg Rider (Goblin on a wolf) probably it will be a stronger vulture or maybe a goliath.
Also both evil will spawn scourge or maybe mutalisks to represent the Evil Bats of the north that aided the goblin and warg armies.
This is what I'm thinking so far. Let me know if you have any suggestions or revisions you'd like to share.
Here are some ideas for heroes, tell me what you think.
Heroes for Lakemen:
Bard - goliath with missile pack distance upgrades
Heroes for Dwarves
Dain II Ironfoot - Marine (with stim & rifle distance upgrade)
Thorin Oakenshield - firebat (with stim & rifle distance upgrade)
Fili - ghost(Duran) (with rifle distance upgrade)
Kili - ghost(stukov) (with rifle distance upgrade)
(should I give these two lockdown?)
Bilbo Baggins - Dark Templar or ghost with cloak and decloak?
Heroes for elves:
Thranduil - Battle Cruiser (should I give Yamoto cannon and energy upgrade?)
Legolas - Marine (with stim and rifle distance upgrade)
Gandalf - Arbiter (he's a wizard so free recal and 100 energy stasis?)
Heroes for Beorn:
Beorn: Archon(Great Bear form), a beacon will change him into a slightly weaker terran unit, probably a marine or ghost(with relevant ability) upgrades.
Heroes for Orcs of the North(Goblins):
Bolg - zergling (with speed and attack speed upgrade)
Bolg's Troll bodyguards(how many should there be?) - probably hydralisks (with speed and range upgrades)
northern descendant of Ungoliant - defiler (with plague, dark swarm and consume and energy upgrade)
Heroes for Wolves of the North (Wargs):
Draugluin - Ultralisk(with speed upgrade)
Carcharoth - Torrasque(with speed upgrade)
(yes I know both of these were killed in earlier ages by Huan and Beren but I can't find any specific wolves mentioned for the battle of the Five Armies).
northern descendant of Ungoliant - defiler (with plague, dark swarm and consume and energy upgrade)
Let me know what you think, or if you have any suggestions let me know.
