School have already began here last June 11.
And I fuckin' hate it. Inasmuch as I love the Computer subject, I hate what they're teaching us--- HTML basics. We're sophomore students and they're teaching us how to make pages using Notepad. By dear God, I've already learned way more than XHTML since fifth grade.

I'm going back in a week. While a part of me likes staying at home and just photoshoping or going to random places to do random stuff another part of me is excited to go back because this is going to be my senior year. I'm also looking forward to my psychology and APChem classes. It would also be nice to meet some of my friends back at school again.

I love school, not because I'm one of those people that over achieve and are weird like that, but because I value learning and knowledge. I happen to have good and fun teachers so I learn efficiently and well.
I'm really looking forward to almost all of my classes. I know my Chemistry class won't be easy, but then again my teacher is a biologist - not a teacher. So she understands chemistry and biology better than any high school teacher.
And then I have my favorite class of mathematics. My teacher is awesome. He lets each person work what they feel like working, and you don't have to do work if you don't want to, but he often makes fun of you in class for it.
The rest of the classes will be enjoyable just to learn. I make school fun tbh.

This is my senior year of college...already. Feels like the time has flown by way too fast, and it really makes me depressed to be quite honest.
This year's going to suck a lot. Senior year's basically when the shit hits the fan and not only are you faced with a collosal load of work, but several critical decision points as well.

Your teachers sound good. I have a combination of a pervy science teacher that is trying to invent his own teaching style and uses us as guinea pigs, a senile math teacher who will explain something three times, and do it differently every time, and an entire grade of hockey players who pretty much act like the stereotypical jock in the stereotypical teen angst movie (Don't even get me started on the girls). I go to a really small school where I'm basically the only kid who doesnt get totally shitfaced every single weekend (fuck off, it's a choice), and my parents have this idea that because I got straight As in grade school that I am going to work my ass off so that when a stranger gives me a number on a piece of paper at the end of the semester, that number will be high enough to earn people's respect. And the sad truth is that if I don't just play along with all of the trivial bullshit I won't get into a good school, so I won't get a good education, so I won't get a good job, so I won't be able to have a really successful life with a family and everything. Sooooo gayyy.

Is it particularly abstract, involve too much math? Do you enjoy it? Will your degree provide a lot of opportunities? What do you plan on doing after you get your degree?
I'm not going to lie, it's a lot of work. It's a lot of math, and it's a lot of core science/background. Quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics/thermodynamics are the most difficult and abstract courses I've taken to date. These entire avenues of science were built on statistics, probability and math, so the line between physical theory and models used to describe these systems begins to blur a bit. It takes a bit of time to wrap your head around it.
My program is Nanotechnology Engineering, so we obviously have a strong influence of 'nano'-oriented course material. The courses are certainly still do-able, but they require a lot of work to understand. At crunch time I'm waking up every day at 8am, and working straight until 2am for 3-4+ weeks. Despite all of this, I absolutely love what I'm doing and I love learning this material. In addition to that, the hard work makes the relaxing and partying all the better (and trust me, engineers know how to party).
And now the hard questions >_<.
Without a doubt this degree will provide opportunities. My program provides a strong background in numerous avenues of science, with stresses on materials science, characterization and electronics. Regardless of if I go into pure "nano," a job will await. Now, on that note, it seems that nanotechnology is the natural evolution of science - that is, everything is beginning to move toward the nanoscale, whether it be through actual nanoscale devices or simple nanoscale characterization. There are certainly limitless opportunities for research at the nanoscale. I'll list a few to wet your tastebuds - I'm well acquainted with the materials and solar cell sides of things, so if you have any questions, feel free:
energy - solar/fuel cell, algae biodiesel, etc.
nanoelectronics - both current and next-gen semiconductor devices, OLEDs - ultrathin displays, etc.
nanobio - targeted drug delivery, prosthetic limbs/implants improvements, etc.
nanomaterials - colloidal nanoparticles, nanotubes/nanomaterials, meta materials, polymer nanocomposites, etc.
nanodevices - MEMS, NEMS, Microfluidics, Nanofluidics, lab on a chip, etc.
As for what I plan to do after my degree, I'll probably head to do graduate work. My current sights are set on a UK university for nanoelectronics, but we'll see how things pan out. After that, I'll likely want to get some experience in a corporate environment, and from there maybe head back to school either as post-doc, prof, or for something entirely new (maybe patent law?). We'll see as things go.
Football started last monday so my "summer freedom" is pretty much over. And I have barely started 1 of the books I need to read for honors English (I love to procrastinate) so not a lot of time. School starts in 12 days or something.
Im looking forward to it because I get to see so many friends again, but the homework is obnoxious, id rather work my ass of all day at school than have hours of homework =/

Thanks a lot for that post, Graeme, and for telling the truth. Very helpful. I am willing to do the work, as long as it isn't "busy work", and is do-able. The university I am going to has invested a lot in research on nanotech (Brand new buildings, facilities, instruments), and has chosen to make it one of it's priorities. I'm looking seriously into either this program (http://www.aep.cornell.edu/eng10_page.cfm?webpageID=29) or this one (http://www.mse.cornell.edu/mse/undergrad/).
Indeed, like you said, this does seem to be the "natural evolution of science" as it seems like anything can be made smaller, better, cheaper, and stronger using this research.
I'm curious as to why you're deciding to go post-grad. Are you looking to do research?
Also, would I be wrong in saying that nanotechnology will have a profound effect on industry and on the market? That is, to say, there will be enormous opportunities to sell a myriad of products based on the innovations created by nano-science? I ask because I'm interested in creating a start-up or joining one after I get a degree.
I'm well acquainted with the materials and solar cell sides of things, so if you have any questions, feel free
Thanks. Regarding materials, how exactly does research proceed? What I mean is, how are you creating new materials, and how is that related to nanotech/different from normal chemical synthesis?

Eng Phys is definitely a solid program. McMaster here in Ontario has an Eng Phys program - it was my second choice after nano at UW.
I'm going to be doing graduate work because I believe it's necessary for nanotechnology and nanoscience research. The research, and moreso the theory behind the research, are incredibly specific and incredibly complex. I don't really feel like my knowledge would be as refined as I'd like it to be without the graduate level studies. I am also looking into doing some research as well, so it's a perfect opportunity.
I would say that nanotechnology certainly has the potential to impact various avenues of industry and the market. But on that note, it's important to understand that most areas of nanotechnology are still very much in their infancy and are therefore research. Aside from nanomaterials and certain areas of nanoelectronics, these are things that won't be in commercial use for another 1-2+ decades.
And I would caution you to take the 'bottom-up' dreams of nanotech. with a grain of salt - you're not ever going to be assembling things, atom by atom, using a nanofactory as he proposed. It's simply not feasible. Nanomaterials to an extent can be sold as is, but that's mostly left to larger companies or companies contracted under the larger companies (ie. Sigma Aldrich sells all kinds of nanomaterials - metal/semiconductor NPs, CNTs, etc.). More likely, however, you would choose a specific avenue of nanoresearch that can be applied to a specific area of industry. For example, one might take the research done on TiO2 nanotubes with CdSe QD sensitizers and try to make a cheap, commercial solar cell. Or one might look into work done with NEMs and sensors for the purposes of creating a specific gas sensor. There will certainly be opportunities to use nanotechnology to sell products, but given the huge amount of interest and competition in this area of science, innovation will be key.
--------------
I worked on the synthesis and characterization of graphene oxide, graphene and various colloidal nanoparticles in my past work term. I found that in most research environments, you start with papers from various closely-related projects and reproduce their results. Then you simply build on their results and make changes as required in order to do something or make something unique. I should also note that most research isn't based so much on the actual materials creation and characterization, but its application (unless you're an XRD freak and spend your entire doctorate analyzing diffraction patterns to characterize a crystal structure of some rare compound).
Also, I really want to stress that the chemical synthesis of nanomaterials is typically not all that different from regular chemical synthesis. Most nanomaterials are created by little tricks and variations from regular chemical syntheses (aside from techniques developed exclusively for nanomaterials). Nanotechnology is truly just an extension of current organic/inorganic methods, in order to create materials at the nanoscale. For example, the creation of ZnO nanoparticles (3-5nm) is quite literally as simple as adding zinc acetates to 0oC ethanol and sonicating, bringing the temp up for growth and sonicating a bit more.

Getting to class is the easy part. What happens in class is the tricky bit. After taking German I and thinking I was being a little to campy with my background stuffs, I thought I'd take some Japanese and be worldly. I got a B in the sucker, but I was overpoweringly disturbed with how little I knew after a rather onerous semester. It wasn't until Japanese IV that you learned basic get-around words and skills. In contrast, German II and III were far more educational. :D

I'd imagine that has to do with the way some of these languages developed.
English is already part of the same language family as german, which inherently carries some similarities. On the other hand, I dont think Japanese is in the same family as many of the other East Asian languages (Japanese is its own language family?)
Alot of languages from Asia are difficult for Americans to pick up on (although as I understand it, Swedish is also unnecessarily complex)

Well I took 3 years of Japanese and I could only absorb a little bit of it so don't feel bad GA. The kids that got A's in the class were mostly the ones that were studying vigorously or chinese. I mainly got B's and one or two A's here and there.

Yeah, Japanese is really hard to learn for English natives. The only thing remotely similar is Chinese, and even that is drastically different.
If you want to try something new, take Japanese. If you want to learn something, take German.
And I hear the start date of school might be pushed back, which will make my next summer horrible.

Well I just had my first day of school today. It wasn't that bad, although I did get a surprisingly large amount of homework for the first day of school.
I had a really funny encounter with a sophomore in cardio fitness(walking). The girl in front of my looked back at me, smiled. Then about 5 minutes later she asked what grade I was in. I tell I'm a freshman and she replies: "Oh thats to bad," *looks sad* 5 minutes later she asks me more question about my self.:shiftyr:
Later we are on bleachers with some other people and she twist herself around to talk to some people behind us. Because of how she twisted her waist must have shrunk an inch, and that extra inch of space went to the back of her jeans. Well anyway... I could see her ass! It was really strange! Her underwear was, like, a half a foot lower then where they should have been...hmm...Ughh...:<

Hey, shish. Just letting you know, I think you're a closet case. Seems a little random, really, but honestly you've been looking more and more like it with the constant, overpowering homosexual references. I'm very scared that soon your sig or custom user title will sport "yiff" or "yaoi" monikers. I find myself apprehensive in that regard.

Argh my first day of school was horrible. I had a huge pimple on my chin that got even bigger overnight and I had to go around covering it. I started chewing a piece of gum in the car and by second period the gum started dissolving in my mouth and I couldn't take it out so I had to gradually take a tissue and drag it along the surface of my tongue to remove all the gum, but even then there were long threads of gum sticking to my lips so that was pretty nasty. APChem was a killer. I had totally forgot everything over the summer and review was like 15 minutes, then we got a worksheet that I have no idea how to do. Other than that, everything turned out fine. :)

What? Overpowering homosexual references? Wtf where. I'm not gay. Leave me alone. Oh god.
You would never find me with furfag shit or homosexual crap in my signature or avatar. That's just gay, literally. I'll get rid of that quote if it makes you feel better.

While we're on this tangent, I don't think GA really cares about your sig or avy. Your reaction to his statement, though, suggests you are very defensive about this. And we know where this leads...

Defensiveness is a sign of fear, right? So fear as we know leads to anger, and anger...
Dark Side, Shish, come to the Dark Side. You're obviously headed there anyway, by Modred's reckoning.

The independence, get away from home.
What are your classes next year?
This semester I have: Calc I, European History to 1648, Fundamentals of Speech Communication, and Intro to Antrhopology.
Did you actually miss school?
Not particularly, but I'm excited to move on with my life now.
What grade will you be in?
Well I have 28 credits (that count) from high school, so even though I'm a freshmen I'm like 2-4 credits short of being a sophomore. lol

My chem teachers cool and all...but he's very passive. Last friday we did a lab and when our group tried to light our bunsen burners they wouldn't work so I told him and he was like, "they should work". Then I asked him again and he said, "you guys should know how to light your own burners." When I finally got him to try and light the burner and he was unsuccessful he got us a new one(this was about 10 minutes into class btw and the lab took up the whole period). At first the new one started working fine but then, once again, it turned off, and I couldnt turn it back on. I asked him about it and he ignored me so I just stood there like an idiot for 40 minutes with an incomplete lab...APchem sucks. @2Anderson, I know someone just like you. All he does is sleep yet he seems to get smarter everyday somehow. Bah I need my brain reconfigured.
Higher education my ass.

Third week of school begins tomorrow.
I'm getting along with the ppl better than i expected. Though the breaks are still dreafully boring even when i'm sitting with some people, the lessons are usually not.
I'll get rid of that quote if it makes you feel better.
That almost makes ~me~ sound bad >_>
Oh and for the record, I liked school. I kinda miss it. A big building, filled with 1000 little kids, half of them are girls. And you have a good excuse to go there and talk to them every day. I really miss that.
My current classes are cool though, too. Not as many people, but we get along great so it's fun and shizzles AND I HAVE A SEXY TEACHER OMG SO HAWT THAT I CAN BARELY FOCUS ON THE LESSON NO WAIT I CAN'T
I have a semester break on winter though so I've been studying all along by now.
Yeah, I have some sexy hawt teachers too, Aqo.
School starts for me in 2 days. I'm not excited.

That's right! The best RP since PvR - we're bringing this baby to an epic state of epicness!
But in order to do this, we need as many people as we can get! Don't worry if you haven't RP'd before, or are a bit rusty. We'll help people get into the scene as they go, and if we get a ton of people, we can have multiple storylines running and a really fun time! So get your character made!

I am going into Grade 11 ... and I must say I'm looking forward to it for the most part. I'm taking the Science trio - you know, chem, bio, physics and I'm looking forward to physics. Math Principles (aka advanced math), French, and Electronics 11... the latter should prove interesting since I havent taken the grade 10 version, but was allowed to take it because im moving into a big senior secondary from my lil junior secondary.
Im looking forward to a fresh start because I royally fucked any possible shot at being well liked at my old school within the first few days. Sadly, I'll still be hunting after the same chick. yeah.
And Faiien, lol, I recognize the big zit problem and I raise you a disfiguring scar on my nose caused by a cookie.
Schools started...just had our first dance. Everything has been pretty succesful. Now its just boring as hell. Realized how much I hate homework again. Forgot about it over the summer.
