View Full Version : How much is gas where you live?

Right now it's $3.97 for Union 76, $3.99 for Shell, and about $4.01 for Exxon.

Just got a new Kia Rio, and I have to say, i'm very pleased with the gas mileage. I filled up before I left on an 87.5 mile round trip, and I used 2.2 gallons of gas in the process. That's 39.7 MPG. (85% highway driving, 15% town driving)

Share your gas prices and MPG.

My transportation costs = my food costs since I ride my bike, I don't know what the gas prices are.

Is that equivalent to american dollars? and how much is that per gallon?

I don't know for sure what it is here right now but it's been going back and forth between the range of like $3.90 and $4.20 per gallon.

Right here in MI just outside the metro Detroit area it's about $3.8* a gallon.

Is there a reason why the gas prices have gone down recently? They fluctuate so often that I've stopped bothering to check up on the reasons why.

Gas was 4.63 in Connecticut in late June this year.

It's now 3.63 in West Virginia, with prices varying around that.

3.86 at the Sheetz down the road.

Gas prices here are around the 3.60s and will probably go down (oil went down 4 dollars a barrel).

If what he says is true (in American dollars). Then 1 liter = roughly 1/4 gallon of gas (it's like .26 iirc) so it'd average out to about $4.80 a gallon.

Around here it was about 3.70 last I checked. About a month and a half ago it was about 2.90. :E

Is there a reason why the gas prices have gone down recently? They fluctuate so often that I've stopped bothering to check up on the reasons why.

Several speculative companies who invested millions of dollars in oil went belly up and released that oil into the open market thus increasing the supply.

My car takes premium. Joy.

Anyway, the price has dropped 8c in the three days since I last purchased gas, and it had dropped 8c in the week before that. Since I filled up a month ago, gas has dropped nearly 30c.

July 14: $4.27 / gallon
July 30: $4.15 / gallon
Aug 5: $4.07 / gallon
Aug 9: $3.99 / gallon

Deduct 25c for regular.

Oregon has some pretty high gas prices, unfortunately. It just went under four dollars for the first time in months.

you know what's ridiculous about how they price their gas?
I heard about this from a friend of mine who is a manager at a gas station. They literally drive to the other gas stations every couple hours to see what their prices are and set their price as the average or match the highest price of the other gas stations.

They have to do that to make a living. If they charge much lower than they do already they won't be getting hardly any money.
You can't blame the gas station managers, blame the world for having such a high demand of it.

Don't rip on the gas station owners. They have to buy entire truck-loads tanks of gasoline up front, running up bills in the tens of thousands of dollars before they sell a drop. In a market like the last month, they're the ones out to lose the most. Buy a few thousand gallons assuming a price of around $4, marked up a few cents for profit. Then gas starts dropping nationwide and is hitting the $3.60s.

This is the stuff that can put family owned stations out of business.

You both have valid points. I retract my former statement.

BTW, last time I saw a gas station, which was a few days ago, it was around the 4.11, so I assume it is between 4.00 and 4.20 right now.

3.86 last time I filled up in Illinois.

I drive a Suzuki Aerio, which is somewhat of a gas hog for a small car. It's less fuel efficient than a comparably sized Civic / Corolla (but it gets 25 more HP, making it a lot more fun to drive).

I get about 33 on the highway when I do 75-80, 35'ish when I do 50, and about 28 in the city. AC drops it down to 25 in the city, unfortunately. I haven't seen AC really affect my highway mileages.

And yes, I watch my MPG like a hawk for some reason.

Perhaps one might blame oil speculators for jacking up the prices

Houston, TX.

$3.80 near the mall/airport/downtown, $3.67 in town and near the freeway, and $3.51 a mile off the freeway, outside the loop.

My car gets around 30mpg highway, 23mpg city.

If I calculated correctly, it'd be somewhere around 9 dollars per gallon.

If I didn't, I'd feel silly for sucking at math.

it's dropped to $3.60 here, and yeah, they have definitely been dropping recently.

They'll probably continue to drop until it becomes painfully apparent that Mccain will not become president.

Give me a break. And when gas jumps up 10c a gallon? What do those poor widdle bitty gas station owners do then? Fucking reap profits like madmen. L2 use a bank, and maybe you won't go bankrupt. The whole process is rather simple, isn't it? When the prices go up, you match them immediately. When the prices go down, you "coast" down, slowly lowering your prices over a period of a few weeks. You average down your losses by padding the downturn, and you gain max profit from increases.

If gas stations were as bad off as you say they are, there wouldn't be 3 of them on every intersection. Gas stations are fucking ridiculous profit producers, in every conceivable way. Go by a $1.50 can of expired tuna there, find out what I'm talking about.

Gas A Month Ago: $4. Gas Today: $3.50.

If prices continue to climb, then yes, they can make a killing off of gasoline. However, when prices are volatile, it hardly seems prudent to revel in the gains, knowing that you're likely to need that extra money to survive falling prices.

The claim I was addressing made it sound like gas stations make heaps of money from gasoline sales. The $1.50 can of tuna itself suggests the weakness of this assumption, since the store can more directly control the price of convenience store items than gasoline, more easily maximizing their profit from those items. That doesn't mean that they don't make the most of their revenue from gas, but there's a difference between being able to buy your next truck load and laughing your way to the bank.

just went up to 4:20, but about 10 miles out of town there is a station with gas at 4. So, I don't now where I should go because the cheaper one is pretty far just to get gas.
