A place to talk about anything Olympics related. I don't know how many users here at Warboards watch the Olympics but post this up anyways :P. For starters, did anyone catch the opening ceremonies? I missed them last night.

But I don't have TV, and I have stuff to do.

Imagine dancing nonstop while watching countries march for two hours.

That would be painful indeed.

After that was fencing, which i don't really know anything about, so I didn't pay much attention to.

I'm looking forwards to the Basketball. I watched a bit of it here and there.

I missed some of the opening ceremonies, but the few parts I watched were great.

And the cauldron lighting was pretty sweet, but I think it dragged on for a bit too long.

The best lighting ever was in barcelona, in 92. I remember watching it as a little kid.

Later on didn't they find out that the arrow was tied to a string? From what I heard anyways...

I just think China's torch lighting got really boring with so many carriers, and how long it took that guy to run all around the stadium, but it was worth it.

Phelps is a freakin' fish. What a beast underwater. Already 2 golds.
And Lezak went into a gear above top gear to beat the french dude.
The French were talking trash about the US team, and were the favorites to win. Now what, bitches?

I guess the olympics show what is humanly possible, because these are humans competing, but some of the things they do make me firmly believe these aren't humans. Unbelievable. This is why I love watching swimming.

If I'm not mistaken from SI the tallest one is 6'3" ... that is taller than you guys? :o And honestly unless you are standing next to someone it isn't that big of a deal. But blah, women's volleyball players are skinny (as are most female olympic athletes)

Anderoo has a dream, leave him be :P

I tried watching one of the basketball games, but the US blew China out of the water so I played starcraft. I found more entertainment value in it. (I will admit the swim relay was a good finish though. For those of you who don't know though Phelps swam slower than his french counterpart I believe...).

But seriously I watched that swim relay where they shattered the old olympics record. It has been four years since the old one was set of course they are going to shatter it. Four years training for a dedicated athlete is an eternity.

@anderoo womens volleyball isnt hot. They're all taller than you.

They may be tall, but their shorts are sooo short...

Today I watched a bit of China vs USA women's basketball. Those women out-testosterone me by a mile, so I wasn't that interested. Also, I think it's sort of a waste of time to watch those complete smashings. USA was up by more than double China's points and the commentator's are still trying to make it interesting.
"The great thing about this Chinese women's team is that they're a team, they're playing B-Ball, not 'we'-ball. No one is trying to be a hero, and that's how teams come back from defecits, by sticking to the plan and working together." Yeah... I bet I missed an epic comeback there.

The openig ceremony was great. The footsteps in teh air was a computer simulation. They have admitted it, but they were just laughing, because they didn't believe it would fool people.

Suffice to say the US women's b-ball team has the athletes on it to rape basically any other team out there that plays like a team, but of course I don't follow it to closely. Which is why I'll probably watch the final games, but nothing else unless I see a good rep for it. B-ball just isn't the same as a fan when a team goes up twenty and they stop playing like a team. :'(

What people need to watch for is the team's with athletes in the top five percent, and well rounded abilities without a huge drop off in talent that work together. Utter rapage awaits those other teams :P

You can look at last year's NCAA basketball tourney. UNC did good with Tyler Hansborough but got absolutely raped when they didn't play like a team. UNC closed the gap when they played like a team, but stopped and got raped. Of course I'll save my thesis statement on sports for later ;)

And it's the announcer's job to keep it interesting. People actually watch crap like that the whole way through though.

I've never dated, nor hooked up with a girl over 5'4, except for one, very, very hot exception. based on that rule, i cannot find them[female volleyball players] attractive. Was watching a bit of tennis today between canada and UK, not sure who ended up winning the match though [it was doubles]

The Men's Whitewater (K1?) rafting was amazing. Benjamin (er...K-something) got a bronze, the first Olympic medal for the country of Togo. What a great run. He was so happy at the end of it, he snapped his paddle cleanly in two after he saw his time. I'll be cliche here and say it:

GO WORLD!

-DocZetta

Edit: This just on on CNN.com: Michael Phelps has become the winningest Olympic athlete ever, earning his fourth gold medal of the Beijing Games with a world record in the 200-meter butterfly. It was Phelps' 10th career gold, breaking a tie with Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis and two others, SI.com reports.
How sad. CNN's creating a new word -- "winningest".

I found it really weak that almost everyone I know watched the ceremony, as lots of people were going 'BOYCOT IT! China is being mean to it's citizens!' in the weeks leading up to the Olympics.

For that reason I refused to watch it. Though I'm ofc happy that The Netherlands won some games/sports.

Reading: you fail. Chinese already won. And there's more than one girl, there's three that are in question. They've been announced as "16" by official sources, mere months after having been announced as 13, 14, and 13. Of course, now the entire thing is shifted onto the IOC to either enforce rules or admit it's a paper tiger. And since China can always destroy evidence faster than we can find it, the IOC is pretty much a failed enterprise. Gogo Olympics, where we sacrifice our citizens' health in trade for a few moments of nationalistic hubris.

I don't get why China gets so much critic. Countries, and especially people like Bush should not say anything! The US have Gitmo, so they shouldn't say anything, not a thing, I say!!

Sure, the chinese do some crazy stuff, but if the People's Republic of China implemented full democracy, the country would fall apart, and there would be massive wars between the 56 different nationalities.

Basically, the country would fall back into a war between small states.

Faiien

And you know this...how? Are you some sort of seer from Charmed here to guide us on the path of righteousness? I think one of the main reason that China is getting so much criticism is because they haven't been able to back up their promises. Reporters are getting arrested and getting their footage taken away left and right, the air is so full of smog that bicyclist had to enter the country wearing masks, and THEIR CHEATING.

We all know it, we just don't have the proof to back it up, and before you say, Pics or it didnt happen I reference you to the newspaper articles that were published claiming one of the girls in the Olympics to only be 13. China has its own laws and a right to enforce them. Even if most are technicalities, it's still the law.

We all know it, we just don't have the proof to back it up, and before you say, Pics or it didnt happen

Solid evidence, or it didn't happen.

I reference you to the newspaper articles that were published claiming one of the girls in the Olympics to only be 13.

Word of the day.

If we let people get away from their errors, they'll only continue to make more errors.
